Project Title: Digitalizing the ancient specimens for traditional Smithsonian.
Objectives:
Some Smithsonian institutions are restricted to their own location, so researchers may have
to travel to where the institution is situated. This could restrict some researchers who are
unable to go to other places for personal or work reasons. The proponent suggests that to
avoid these restrictions, the proponent will digitize the collections of ancient objects,
artworks, artefacts, specimens, and some other things that the Smithsonian have. This
would allow researchers to continue their own work freely while they are in their own
place.
Scope Statement:
Includes:
Internet to access the web.
Domain to have a platform.
Information about each artifact, specimens, and other things that the Smithsonian
have.
Accurate 3D models of each artifact, specimens, and other things that the
Smithsonian have.
Excludes:
The actual physical artifacts.
Computers.
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
This project used the Modified Waterfall Methodology. This software
development methodology uses the same core principles of the traditional
Waterfall Model's step-by-step process, but provides greater flexibility and
control over the categorization of each phase. Unlike the traditional Waterfall
Methodology, the modifiable methodology allows the developers to revisit past
phases when needed. It ensures that if the client wants to add another feature or
remove an existing one, or if proponents identify loopholes in the process,
adjustments can be made without disrupting the entire workflow. The
methodology was chosen because it offers a structured and flexible framework.
Requirement Gathering
Collect detailed information on which Smithsonian artifacts and
specimens to digitize.
Conduct brainstorming sessions, research, and interviews with curators
and researchers.
System & Design Phase
Define system architecture.
Design user interface (UI).
Design and structure the database.
Plan 3D model integration.
Development Phase
Frontend development of the digital platform.
Backend development for data management and integration.
Process and integrate accurate 3D models of artifacts.
Implement the database for artifact storage and retrieval.
Testing
Perform unit testing for each component.
Conduct integration testing between modules.
Execute user acceptance testing (UAT).
Conduct performance testing for scalability.
Operation and Maintenance
Deploy the system online.
Monitor system performance and user activity.
Provide regular maintenance.
Implement updates and enhancements as needed.

Risk Analysis
1. Risk: Data Inaccuracy (Artifacts not properly digitized or misclassified).
o Mitigation: Implement double-check verification by experts and use
metadata standards.
2. Risk: System Downtime or Technical Failures.
o Mitigation: Use cloud hosting with backup servers and monitoring tools.
3. Risk: Budget Overruns due to unforeseen costs in 3D scanning and storage.
o Mitigation: Set a 15% contingency fund and prioritize critical features first.
4. Risk: Low User Adoption by Researchers.
o Mitigation: Provide training, easy-to-use interface, and feedback sessions to
improve usability.
Expected Deliverables
