INTRODUCTION

In today’s digital age, social media platforms have become an important part of students’ daily

lives. One of the most popular platforms among the youth is TikTok, known for its short-form

videos that entertain, inform, and engage users worldwide, TikTok also helps people to

communicate and learn others culture by watching foreigners short videos, this way we can learn

by watching, TikTok is also know for it’s visual learning method that helps students learn fast as

it shows vivid pictures in slideshows and videos, they can also help students learn by using their

creativity to make an educational content. The effects of TikTok usage among the students

productivity for their academic achievements by watching TikTok videos a student can learn from

TikTok especially in “Learn on TikTok” it pop up on TikTok where you can choose to learn with

this you can gain knowledge, and learn something new in TikTok as it teaches us new things such

as Health, Plants, and educational background. TikTok usage has significantly increased,

especially when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world. As a result, a significant change

occurred as online learning methods were implemented in schools, requiring both educators and

students to quickly adjust to more digital methods that take advantage of social media and other

online learning resources.

Since TikTok entered the education scene, it has quickly grown into a wide learning platform. Its

#LearnOnTikTok campaign alone has gained over seven billion views in recent years, making it a

major learning platform worldwide (Faktor, 2021; Iqbal, 2020). Given this rapid growth and

influence, it is essential to explore how TikTok impacts the academic skills of students.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

TikTok was launched by ByteDance, a Chinese software company, and later merged with

[Link] in the US and Europe. Its AI-powered algorithm creates personalized short-form

video content that is widely patronized due to its accessibility, instant gratification, and ability to

boost creativity, attracting more than 1.5 billion users worldwide.

However, research shows that students’ attention spans are noticeably shorter as a result of their

increased reliance on internet video platforms, especially TikTok. Many students have difficulty

focusing during class; they find it increasingly challenging to remain attentive for 40–45 minutes

and absorb the information (Kuss & Griffiths, 2017; Firth et al., 2019). This decline in attention

may “rewire” cognitive processes in ways that hinder concentration and memory retention,

which in turn affects academic performance (Giedd, 2020; Du et al., 2024).

Even though some studies recommend limiting students’ exposure to video-sharing platforms,

the growing number of Gen Z users highlights the need for more innovative solutions. TikTok’s

potential as an educational platform should therefore be examined through the perspective of

technology acceptance. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by Davis (1989) is

a well-established framework for analyzing the adoption of digital technologies (Sprenger &

Schwaninger, 2021). It has been widely applied in different disciplines, contexts, and regions,

making it a valuable tool for anticipating user behavior (Marikyan & Papagiannidis, 2023).

This study seeks to understand the correlation between TikTok usage and students’ academic

achievement in terms of productivity in completing school tasks and overall performance. It will

also identify the effects of constantly watching TikTok videos while managing academic
requirements, as well as the reasons why students may prioritize TikTok over submitting

schoolwork on time.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The ongoing use of TikTok videos by Grade 12 students at LCNHS raises worries about its

possible effects on their academic skills and productivity. Constant exposure to short, attention-

grabbing content could lead to shorter attention spans, poor time management, and lower

academic performance. It is important to find out if using TikTok impacts students' ability to

concentrate on schoolwork, manage their study time well, and reach their academic goals.

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of TikTok usage among Grade 12 students at LCNHS, measured by daily

usage time and how often they access the app?

2. Is there a significant link between the amount of TikTok usage and the academic performance

of Grade 12 students at LCNHS?

3. What is the impact of TikTok usage on the academic skills of HUMSS students at LCNHS?

4. What insights and recommendations can be provided on the responsible use of TikTok for

academic and personal growth?


SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To students, this research study can help students in using TikTok and its impact on academic

skills by sharing information and knowledge that using the TikTok app can help in searching for

ideas and concepts through watching video clips, and to be updated on current and innovative

ideas.

To teachers, this research study can help teacher in using TikTok. Teachers will learn how

TikTok influences HUMSS students’ study habits, and critical thinking skills. Teachers can learn

And how TikTok can effect on the students academic skills.

To administration, study will expand the administration knowledge about the positive and

negative effects of using TikTok for academic purposes, such as enhancing academic skills and

identifying educational applications. It will also explore the potential benefits TikTok offers for

learning.

To future researchers, they can adapt our methods to study different student populations or

academic subjects. Data collection ( questionnaires, interview ,protocols) can be used or

modified by future researchers to gather data on similar topics

future researchers to their own analysis of their research topic.)


SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study focuses on identifying the correlation between TikTok app usage among Grade 12

HUMSS Students at Lucena City National High School during the school year 2025-2026. This

study aims to identify the correlation that TikTok app and Academic Achievement have in terms

of productivity of students, it also provides the skills that students might develop/learned while

watching TikTok reels/videos. This study’s delimitations include the time of the researchers

spend in conducting the research, identifying how many participants this research needs, the

availability of the participants, and ensuring that the statistical questionnaires are answered

truthfully.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Academic Performance

Conceptual: The measurable outcome of a student’s learning process, usually expressed in grades

or scores.

Operational: In this study, academic performance refers to the grades and outputs of HUMSS

students at LCNHS, which may be influenced by their level of TikTok usage.

Academic Skills

Conceptual: The set of skills required for successful learning in school, including reading,

writing, critical thinking, studying, time management, and problem-solving.


Operational: In this study, academic skills are measured through the students’ productivity in

completing school tasks, their study habits, and overall academic performance while using

TikTok.

Attention Span

Conceptual: The length of time a person can concentrate on a task without becoming distracted.

Operational: In this study, attention span refers to the students’ ability to stay focused in class and

during study sessions despite frequent TikTok usage.

Productivity

Conceptual: The ability to accomplish tasks efficiently and effectively within a given period.

Operational: In this study, productivity refers to how HUMSS students of LCNHS manage their

school tasks and responsibilities while engaging with TikTok.

Social Media Platform

Conceptual: A digital technology that allows users to create, share, and engage with content, as

well as communicate with others in virtual communities.

Operational: In this study, social media platform refers to TikTok as the specific medium where

students engage, learn, and potentially develop academic skills.

Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) Theory

Conceptual: A framework developed by Davis (1989) that explains how individuals accept and

use technology, based mainly on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use.
Operational: In this study, TAM theory is applied to examine how HUMSS students of LCNHS

accept and use TikTok as a platform, whether for entertainment, learning, or academic support.

TikTok

Conceptual: A social media platform developed by ByteDance where users create and share

short-form videos, often featuring music, trends, and creative content.

Operational: In this study, TikTok refers to the application used by Grade 12 HUMSS students of

Lucena City National High School, focusing on how often they use it (time spent and frequency)

and how this affects their academic skills.

Time Management

Conceptual: The process of planning and controlling how much time to spend on specific

activities.

Operational: In this study, time management refers to how students balance their TikTok usage

with completing assignments, studying, and other school-related activities.

#LearnOnTikTok Campaign

Conceptual: An initiative launched by TikTok to promote educational content on its platform,

allowing users to share and learn informative material.

Operational: In this study, #LearnOnTikTok refers to the educational videos accessed by

HUMSS students and how these may contribute to the development of their academic skills.

Educators might face challenges including ensuring the quality and appropriateness of content accessed by students, maintaining students' focus amid distractive elements of the platform, and balancing entertainment value with academic rigor. Additionally, educators must navigate varying levels of digital literacy among students and establish criteria to use social media responsibly and critically, while integrating these tools' benefits into traditional curricula .

The study suggests that the constant exposure to TikTok's short-form content is linked to poorer time management skills among students. This is because the platform encourages frequent, short-duration use, which can detract from time that students might otherwise spend on studying or completing assignments. This reduction in attention span could hinder their ability to concentrate on schoolwork, negatively affecting their academic performance by reducing their ability to absorb and retain information during classes .

Findings indicating that TikTok affects attention spans and time management suggest that educators could integrate similar engaging, digital content into their teaching methods while maintaining an emphasis on time management. Interactive multimedia resources might capture students' attention better and thereby enhance retention. Encouraging students to use educational features on platforms akin to TikTok could make learning more appealing and help students develop skills in filtering useful content .

The study recommends that students should be conscious of the time spent on TikTok and focus on content that enhances learning and self-development. Educators and administrators are advised to guide students in selecting educational content and managing their time effectively. Emphasizing critical thinking when engaging with social media content can aid in leveraging the platform’s educational potential responsibly without hampering academic performance .

The study suggests focusing on innovative solutions as opposed to simply limiting exposure. This includes integrating engaging, digital educational content akin to TikTok's style, which could keep students interested without overwhelming them. Such solutions require balancing entertainment with informative content, potentially re-engaging students' attention spans longer and more effectively .

While TikTok's entertaining aspects can make learning engaging, they might also distract students, making it difficult for students to focus on in-depth study required for academic excellence. The short, catchy videos could lead students to prioritize entertainment over academic needs unless educational content captures their interest similarly. This conflict suggests a necessity for developing discernment skills in students to balance entertainment with educational utility .

The #LearnOnTikTok campaign can provide educational benefits by making learning materials more engaging and accessible, encouraging self-directed learning, and promoting educational content. However, its effectiveness depends on students' ability to discern valuable information and apply it academically. While the platform offers potential, students might also need guidance to utilize resources effectively to ensure these benefits translate into improved academic skills and knowledge retention .

TikTok's platform uses visual learning methods, providing vivid pictures and videos that help students learn more rapidly and enhance their creativity through content creation. This dual role as a platform for both consuming and creating informational content helps students assimilate new information in innovative ways, potentially benefiting their academic skills and knowledge retention .

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) provides a framework for analyzing how students adopt TikTok as an educational tool, assessing both perceived usefulness and ease of use. Applying TAM helps understand whether students find TikTok beneficial for academic purposes and how willingly they integrate it into their learning processes. This model facilitates predicting behavioral patterns regarding technology use, vital for recommending responsible integration methods into education .
