Advantages of Taking Risks in Personal Life
Taking risks in personal life can lead to numerous positive outcomes since it
often opens doors to new opportunities and experiences that can greatly
improve personal growth and fulfillment. Here are the key advantages of
taking risks in personal life:
Broadens Your Perspectives and Worldview
Venturing into the unfamiliar expands our horizons mentally and
emotionally. When we take risks to step outside our usual experiences, we
open our minds to new ways of thinking. Pushing past previous limits in
knowledge and understanding helps us grow.
Even if a risk we take does not pan out, the insight we gain adds depth to
our perspectives.
Exposure to different cultures and ideas.
Understanding diverse viewpoints.
Gaining insights from unique experiences.
Breaking down stereotypes and prejudices.
Opens Doors to New Relationships and Connections
Part of what holds many people back from taking chances in life is fear of the
opinions of others. However, putting oneself out there can lead to meeting
supportive new friends and mentors.
Risks that involve collaborating with groups on challenging experiences can
build lasting bonds. The connections made by overcoming obstacles together
often prove to be invaluable over time.
Even failures lead to meeting individuals we would never have encountered
otherwise.
Meeting people with similar interests.
Forming bonds with individuals outside your usual circle.
Networking with potential mentors and collaborators.
Building a diverse support network.
Leads to Personal Growth and Self-Discovery
Stepping outside one’s comfort zone means gaining a better understanding
of oneself in the process. Challenging our abilities and testing our limits
teaches us what we are capable of. Facing fears and insecurities head-on
allows us to overcome self-imposed barriers.
Even when our efforts do not go as planned, we learn from mistakes and
false starts on the road to self-discovery. Risks that expand our self-
knowledge ultimately lead to personal growth.
Discovering hidden talents and passions.
Learning more about your likes and dislikes.
Identifying areas for self-improvement.
Uncovering your true potential.
Builds Confidence to Pursue Greater Fulfillment
With each risk taken, we gain the courage to keep moving forward in life.
Chances that may seem intimidating at first get easier over time as self-
confidence grows. Every obstacle we overcome by taking a leap of faith in
our abilities builds trust to keep striving.
Whether we succeed or fail, putting ourselves out there diminishes self-
doubt. As our belief in ourselves strengthens, we gain the assurance needed
to take the risks required to achieve personal fulfillment.
Proving your capabilities to yourself.
Overcoming fears and self-doubt.
Reinforcing a positive self-image.
Gaining the courage to tackle bigger challenges.
Creates Opportunities to Challenge Comfort Zones
Stepping outside our comfort zones can be intimidating, but it creates
chances for growth. Taking risks that push us out of our routine and habitual
behaviors forces us to adapt. Challenging our need for certainty and control
allows us to get comfortable with discomfort over time.
By repeatedly facing uncertainty, we expand our ability to think on our feet.
Pushing past the safety of our comfort zones builds mental toughness,
agility, and self-confidence.
Encouraging continuous personal development.
Promoting adaptability to new situations.
Preventing stagnation and complacency.
Enhancing problem-solving skills.
Allows You to Live Without Regretting Missed Chances
A life lived avoiding risks is likely to lead to regret over chances not taken.
However, putting oneself out there opens the door to a fuller life of
experience with less room left for “what ifs?” Taking risks replaces the
haunting thought of missed opportunities with the comfort of knowing you
gave it your best shot.
Even failures often lead to insights that would have never emerged
otherwise. Living a life of prudent risks means more rewarding adventures
and less lingering regret.
Eliminating “what if” scenarios from your mind.
Embracing opportunities with no lingering doubts.
Making the most of each moment.
Ensuring a fulfilling and adventurous life.

go as anticipated force us to respond quickly to changing circumstances.

stuck in rigid thinking. Failed risks provide opportunities to hone the skill of
rapid course correction critical for resilience.
Learning to thrive in changing environments.
Developing quick decision-making skills.
Becoming more resourceful and innovative.
Handling unexpected situations with ease.
Teaches Valuable Lessons Win or Lose

take risks that challenge us, we build mental fortitude whether we succeed
or stumble. Wins teach us that leaping past self-doubt leads to triumph while
losses condition us to get back up after falls.
Grit grows from both failed risks and hard-won victories that require
perseverance. Each builds emotional stability for the next challenge. The
lessons we learn from risks, win or lose, make future chances less
intimidating.
Gaining practical experience.
Learning from mistakes and failures.
Developing resilience through setbacks.
Understanding the value of persistence.
Expands Your Interests and Hobbies
Risks that spark new passions connect us with meaningful pursuits. When we
challenge ourselves to attempt to create art or learn new sports, hidden
talents often emerge. Interests we would have never tapped into otherwise
can turn into purposes that drive and inspire us.
Failure leads us to rule out some options, but also surprisingly opens doors
to new horizons once inaccessible. Following curiosity expands life’s richness
no matter the outcome.
Discovering new passions and activities.
Diversifying your skills and knowledge.
Finding joy in unexpected areas.
Enriching your personal and social life.
Improves Self-Awareness of Strengths and Weaknesses
Facing fears requires taking a personal inventory of areas where we could
grow stronger. Chances taken provide constructive feedback on skillsets we
have not fully developed.
Losses teach us vulnerabilities requiring more resilience while wins validate
talent developed. As risks reveal inner resources that drive us as well as
deficiencies needing work, our self-understanding becomes clearer. This
expands both our capabilities and our ability to play to our strengths.
Identifying your core competencies.
Recognizing areas needing improvement.
Gaining clarity on personal goals.
Enhancing overall self-assessment.
Pushes You to Achieve More Than You Imagined Possible
Stepping outside our comfort zones requires setting bigger goals for
ourselves. Challenging our abilities and beliefs about what we can
accomplish pushes us to achieve more.

dreamed possible stretches our potential. After finding success, our
confidence to set ambitious targets grows. soon we are achieving more than
we would have imagined in all areas of life.
Setting and reaching higher goals.

uncertainty. Each time we take a chance, we build emotional stamina and
fortitude. Dealing with potential ups and downs teaches composure and
perspective.

situations and ever-changing conditions with grace. Then, our improved
resilience applies across relationships, work, and personal growth.

loyal. People we go through emotional, difficult, or frightening situations with
end up forming tight bonds afterward.

they rely on us in return. The intensity of shared adversity while chasing
dreams cements relationships like little else can.
Creating strong emotional connections.

energize things. Stepping outside our comfort zone keeps life feeling vibrant
by adding an element of unpredictability. Taking chances we would normally
avoid brings welcome spikes of excitement and novelty to schedules.

infuses bland routines with color. A willingness to take risks keeps the
uncertainty required to make life anything but dull.
Preventing monotony and boredom.
Introducing new and thrilling experiences.

Ensuring a lively and spirited existence.
Forces You to Get Creative in Problem Solving
Hitting obstacles along the way requires inventive thinking to navigate
around challenges. Unexpected issues force us to analyze problems from

Builds Courage to Take the Road Less Traveled
Finding and following paths beyond the familiar requires a level of
fearlessness most never summon. Venturing into the unfamiliar means
leaving the safety of well-worn paths for solitary ones full of the unknown.
The longer we travel roads less taken by others, the more emboldened we
become to keep forging ahead.
Soon the road less traveled holds fewer terrors, thanks to courage built by
continually taking risks off the beaten track.
Inspiring independent thinking.
Embracing unconventional paths.
Defying societal norms and expectations.
Achieving success through unique routes.
Allows You to Inspire Others to Take Smart Risks Too
When we model the willingness to take calculated chances, it empowers
others to push past their limits. Our example gives peers the courage to
move beyond their comfort zones as well. People watch how we handle both
failures and successes when venturing into unfamiliar terrain.
Each time we pick ourselves up and keep reaching for our dreams, it inspires
observers. Friends and family also benefit when we encourage them to take
risks within their abilities. Supporting loved ones to chase dreams they once
considered impossible changes lives for the better.
Leading by example.
Encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones.
Sharing experiences and insights.
Fostering a culture of calculated risk-taking.
Creates Interesting Stories and Memories to Cherish
A life lived without some degree of risk-taking tends to fade into a fog of
familiarity in memory. However, stepping outside norms and routines etches
colorful, vibrant moments into our minds. Daring chances create indelible
memories of achievement, new connections, funny mishaps, and growth.
Even when gambles do not pay off, the experience still makes for interesting
tales. Living life fully enough to have great stories worth retelling later
requires leaving caution to the wind occasionally.
After all, the richest recollections come straight from times we threw out the
rulebook and took risks.
Building a rich tapestry of life experiences.
Sharing captivating tales with others.
Reliving exciting adventures.

Promotes Personal Growth Through Rising to Challenges

tremendous growth. Things that once seemed implausible, intimidating, or
downright impossible become achievable. Each time we risk falling short yet
manage to succeed, our definitions of self-capability expand.
Venturing beyond the status quo nudges us continually outside our comfort
zones toward fresh adaptation. Facing down long-held fears and insecurities
enables us to dismantle self-imposed barriers over time. Pushing past self-
doubt builds the strength and self-knowledge required to unlock our utmost
potential.
Overcoming obstacles and adversity.
Strengthening character and resolve.
Pushing personal boundaries.
Achieving significant milestones.
Rewards Boldness to Envision and Chase Dreams
As children, we brim with aspirations untethered to reality. Adulthood often
demands cautious practicality, but dreams never really die. Chasing what
our heart’s desire requires reconnecting with dormant ambitions. Bold risk-
taking actions aligned with what we envision for ourselves bring the greatest
rewards.
Every authentic dream achieved, no matter how improbable, results from
resolute vision paired with audacious effort. Big life goals realized against
the odds renew inspiration to pursue even greater ones. For dreamers
determined to defy limitations, boldness pays off richly.
Realizing ambitious aspirations.
Turning dreams into reality.
Gaining satisfaction from daring pursuits.
Living a life true to your desires and goals.
Disadvantages of Taking Risks in Personal
Life
While taking risks can bring rewards, it also comes with significant
downsides. It’s important to weigh these potential negative impacts carefully
to make informed decisions about when and how to take risks. Here are
some of them:
May Damage Relationships if Others are Impacted
Negatively or Disapprove
Taking risks can sometimes negatively impact those around us, like our
family and friends. For example, if we make a risky financial decision that
results in us borrowing money from loved ones or being unable to help
support them financially, it can damage relationships.
Even if others are not directly impacted, they may disagree with the risk we
have taken and disapprove, causing tensions. We should consider how the
risks we take may reverberate beyond ourselves.
Risky decisions can cause conflicts with loved ones.
Friends and family might feel neglected or unvalued.
Others may perceive risk-taking as irresponsible or selfish.
Disagreements over risk outcomes can lead to lasting tensions.
Can Lead to Financial and Emotional Stress or Distress
Taking too many risks, especially financial ones, can jeopardize our security.
If a risk does not have the payoff we expect, we may end up losing a lot of
money or acquiring debt – causing significant financial stress.
The emotional toll of a risk gone wrong can also lead to distress. Before
taking risks, we should honestly assess if potential failure would result in
emotional or financial hardship we are equipped to handle.
Unsuccessful ventures can result in significant financial losses.
Constant worry about outcomes can cause chronic stress and anxiety.
Emotional strain from failure can affect mental health and well-being.
Recovering from financial setbacks often takes considerable time and effort.
Exposes You to Scams, Theft, and Personal Safety Threats
Unfortunately, risky behavior like trusting questionable opportunities or
people can expose us to scams, theft, and threats to personal safety. Con
artists often target those hungry for a big reward or unlikely success story.
By taking unnecessary risks with money or personal information, we increase
the odds of exploitation.
High-risk activities can attract fraudulent schemes and scams.
Engaging in risky behaviors may increase vulnerability to theft.
Personal safety can be compromised in dangerous situations.
Navigating unfamiliar environments heightens the risk of encountering harm.
Puts Stability and Security Built Over Years in Jeopardy
The more risks we take, the more we potentially jeopardize stability and
security that may have taken years to build. This could include endangering
steady income from a reliable job or losing strong relationships that provide
emotional stability.
While risks can pay off, failure can undo vital elements of life foundations
that took so long to establish.
Risk-taking can undermine long-established stability and security.
Savings and investments might be depleted due to failed risks.
Career progress can be disrupted by pursuing high-risk opportunities.
Long-term plans and goals may be derailed by unforeseen consequences.
Conclusion
After weighing the potential advantages and disadvantages of taking risks in
personal life, a few things seem clear. First, not all risks are created equal;
there are smart risks and not-so-smart ones.
Taking a chance at going after your passion seems much more justified than
gambling away next month’s rent. Situational factors also determine if the
juice is worth the squeeze for taking a chance.
And at the end of the day, there are no guarantees – a risk could lead to the
thrill of victory or agony of defeat. But avoiding risks altogether leads to a
pretty dull life.
So reflect carefully, trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to take some heart-
pounding plunges…as long as you look before you leap!
FAQs
How can I determine if a personal risk is worth taking?
To determine if a personal risk is worth taking, evaluate the potential
benefits against the possible downsides. Consider factors such as the
likelihood of success, the consequences of failure, and your ability to recover
from setbacks. Reflect on your values and long-term goals to ensure the risk
aligns with them. Consulting with trusted friends or mentors can provide
additional perspective. Ultimately, if the potential for growth and fulfillment
outweighs the risks involved, it might be worth pursuing.
What are some common examples of personal risks that can
lead to positive outcomes?
Common personal risks that can lead to positive outcomes include changing
careers, starting a new business, pursuing higher education, moving to a
new city, and initiating a relationship. These risks often require stepping out
of your comfort zone but can result in significant personal and professional
growth, new opportunities, and a deeper understanding of yourself.
Can taking risks lead to long-term success in personal
endeavors?
Yes, taking risks can lead to long-term success in personal endeavors.
Embracing risks often involves learning and adapting, which can build
resilience and open doors to opportunities that wouldn’t have been
accessible otherwise. Successful individuals frequently cite risk-taking as a
crucial element in their journeys, as it can lead to innovation, personal
growth, and the achievement of significant milestones.
How do I balance the need for stability with the desire to
take risks in personal life?
Balancing stability and risk involves careful planning and prioritization.
Maintain a stable foundation in key areas such as finances, health, and
relationships. From this stable base, identify calculated risks that align with
your goals and values. Set clear, manageable steps to mitigate potential
downsides, and avoid overcommitting in areas that could jeopardize your
stability. Regularly reassess your risk-taking endeavors to ensure they are
sustainable and contributing positively to your life.
Are there specific risks that should generally be avoided in
personal life?
Generally, avoid risks that could cause significant harm or are highly unlikely
to succeed. This includes actions that jeopardize your physical safety,
financial security, or emotional well-being without a clear potential for
substantial positive outcomes. Additionally, avoid risks that contradict your
core values or harm your relationships with others. Carefully evaluate the
potential consequences before deciding to proceed.
What are some signs that I might be taking too many risks in
my personal life?
Signs that you might be taking too many risks include feeling constantly
stressed or overwhelmed, experiencing frequent failures without learning
from them, and facing negative impacts on your health, finances, or
relationships. If your decisions are impulsive rather than well-considered, or
if you find yourself in a cycle of instability, it may be time to reassess your
approach to risk-taking and prioritize stability.
How can I learn from failed risks and use those experiences
to grow?
Learning from failed risks involves reflecting on what went wrong and why.
Analyze the decisions you made and the outcomes that followed. Identify
lessons and apply them to future endeavors. Maintain a growth mindset,
viewing failures as opportunities to improve. Seek feedback from others to
gain different perspectives. Documenting your experiences can also help
track progress and remind you of the lessons learned over time.
Can taking risks help in forming deeper connections with
others?
Yes, taking risks can help form deeper connections with others. Vulnerability,
which often accompanies risk-taking, can foster trust and intimacy in
relationships. Sharing your aspirations and fears with others can create a
sense of solidarity and mutual support. By taking social and emotional risks,
such as expressing feelings or seeking new friendships, you open yourself up
to more meaningful and authentic connections.
What role does risk-taking play in achieving personal
fulfillment and happiness?
Risk-taking plays a significant role in achieving personal fulfillment and
happiness by pushing you beyond your comfort zone and enabling growth. It
encourages exploration and self-discovery, leading to a more enriched life.
Taking risks can help you achieve your dreams and goals, providing a sense
of accomplishment and purpose. While not all risks will lead to success, the
experiences gained contribute to a more fulfilling and resilient life journey.
Four reasons to take
risks in your
professional life
Going into business is a calculated risk. So is moving to a new city for a new job,
applying for a position outside of your comfort zone, or asking for a raise you believe
you deserve. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, or a professional working for someone
else, taking risks is important.
In this issue of the Pulse, we look at risk-taking in your career, and why it’s critical for
your career development.
Opportunities for growth.
Canadian writer and motivational speaker Robin Sharma once said, “If you’re not failing
a lot, then you’re not doing very much.”
Taking risks may sometimes lead to failures and mistakes, but it also opens new
opportunities for professional and personal growth. Any time we do something that puts
us outside of our comfort zone, we open ourselves up to acquiring new skills and
valuable learning experiences.
Stimulating innovation and creativity.
Risks often involve trying new things, using new methods, considering new
perspectives, and thinking outside the box. This can lead to breakthroughs that inspire
innovation and creativity. New approaches not only develop your own existing skillsets
but could also lead to wins on professional projects.
For example, trying a new sales pitch may not only show you an alternative path
forward to success, but can also offer valuable insights into what works with your
prospects.
Increasing your professional visibility.
You’ve heard the expression, “fortune favors the bold?” Well, that’s because boldness
and taking risks can get you noticed, where others may fly under the radar.
Taking risks can help you get noticed by others in your industry or organization. When
you take on challenging projects or roles, you increase the likelihood of gaining visibility
and recognition for your work, which can lead to increased opportunities, networking,
and career advancement.
Avoiding career regret.
No one likes being left with a heap of “what ifs”. We often regret the risks we didn’t take
more than the ones we did. By taking calculated risks, you are giving yourself a chance
to pursue your goals and aspirations, and you are less likely to wonder later in life what
could have happened if you had taken that chance.
In conclusion…
There will always be risks in your professional career – some worth taking, some not.
However, don’t resign yourself to never taking any calculated risks. There are lots of
reasons why a well-planned risk could be in your favor.
Tired of playing it
safe? Learn how
to take risks that
pay off
When you think of risk-taking, what comes to mind?
Most of us immediately think of major risks, like jumping out of a plane or
driving at break-neck speeds. In other words — risky behaviors. We tend to
think of risk-takers as reckless, dangerous individuals, and we zero in on
the potential negative consequences.
But in truth, risk-taking is highly subjective. Some people, like skydiving
instructors or professional racecar drivers, take these kinds of risks all the
time. They aren’t reckless. These individuals have calculated their risks,
mastered the necessary skills, and created support systems to mitigate
negative consequences.
Humans tend to apply this “life-or-death thinking” to other, less intense
risks. We stress over asking someone a question, speaking in public , or
asking for a raise. Cognitively, we know the level of risk isn’t the same —
but it feels just as threatening. And that fear tends to keep us firmly in
our comfort zone .
Author Robert G. Allen is known for saying, “Everything you want is just
outside your comfort zone.” Put another way, everything you want requires
some level of risk. Taking risks can be one of the most rewarding
experiences in life, but it’s also one of the hardest to do well. But it’s not
because success isn’t possible. Rather, the fear of failure often stops us
from even trying.
Why is it important to take
risks in life?
Have you ever heard of the principle of inertia?
People often explain the idea using Newtonian law: An object at
rest tends to stay at rest, while an object in motion tends to stay
in motion. When it comes to human behavior, this principle
explains why it’s often easier to stay on the sofa and watch just
one more episode (that autoplay feature is devious).
However, this also underlines the importance of risk-taking. When
we get comfortable — whether in a role, a relationship, or a
career — it’s easier to stay there. Our brains and bodies are wired
for homeostasis (a state of relative stability). So when we feel
comfortable, anything that takes us away from that state seems
like a risk.
Unfortunately, just because we’re comfortable with our current
state doesn’t mean that we’re thriving. In order to flourish, we
need to have a sense of accomplishment and opportunities for
growth. That means stepping out of our comfort zone.
Homeostasis may be “comfortable,” but it’s also a fertile ground
for languishing . Nothing’s wrong, per se — but we’re not growing
and changing, either.
Newton’s law of motion comes with a caveat — objects tend to
stay in their current state, unless acted on by an external force.
For people who feel stuck , taking the right kind of risks can be
just the force they need to get moving again.
7 benefits of taking risks
1. You’ll feel a sense of
accomplishment
It might feel scary to start, but taking a risk — even if it doesn’t
go exactly as planned — can be exhilarating. You’ll be proud of
yourself for your bravery and courage .
2. Erase old stories
Sometimes, we grow up with beliefs or assumptions about
ourselves and the way the world works that don’t serve us. We
often stop questioning these assumptions as we get settled into
our careers — but they may still be running the show.
Taking risks can help you create evidence to disprove those old
stories that may not be serving you anymore. Even if you
wouldn’t change a single thing about your life, releasing those
negative thoughts can be wonderfully freeing.
3. You'll learn more about yourself
What do you like to do? What makes you happy? What are your
values? If you were checking into a hotel at three in the morning
and you didn’t speak the local language, and they didn’t have
your reservation, what would you do?
Okay, that last one was a bit specific. But taking risks challenges
you in big and small ways. As you have new experiences, you
learn more about who you are and what drives your behavior.
New challenges give out a chance to impress yourself and grow.
4. Increases confidence
With each new challenge and risk, you’ll become convinced of
your own ability to handle evolving circumstances. This will make
you a more confident, flexible person and a better leader.
Improved confidence (testedd through experience) can also have
a positive effect on your decision-making skills.
5. Opens up new opportunities
Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to all sorts of new
opportunities, both professionally and personally. You might find
yourself opening your own business or becoming a trendsetter in
your industry.
6. Builds resilience
Taking risks can also help you learn how to handle adverse
outcomes and setbacks, making you more resilient in the face of
adversity. You’ll know that you can thrive no matter what
happens, and become more adept at finding multiple routes to
success.
7. No regrets
Finally, calculated risks are often worth taking, even if they don't
always result in positive outcomes. Without taking them, we
would never know what could have been. Risk-takers are often
more satisfied with their lives and happier with themselves than
non-risktakers.
Risk-taking on teams
Learning how to take risks as an individual can benefit your
performance at work. In order for both small and large businesses
to grow, they need to be comfortable managing risks, growing,
and staying on their edge.
BetterUp measures Team Risk-Taking among our Members, since
it influences so many other areas of personal and professional
development. Compared to those who scored low, BetterUp
members who report high levels of Team Risk-Taking report 47%
more team innovation, 23% more goal attainment, 19% more
engagement at work, and 10% more job satisfaction.
How do you get the
courage to take risks?
A lot of people think that self-confidence is the key to taking risks,
but that's not always the case. You’re not more likely to take risks
because you think you can’t fail. It’s actually more about having
confidence in the outcome. You know that even if things don’t do
perfectly, you have the resources to manage failure.
Building a support system
When you're taking risks, it's essential to have a supportive
network of people around you. These people can help you stay
motivated and encourage you when you're feeling afraid. They
can also help you assess whether a particular risk is worth taking.
For example, if you are thinking about applying for a new role , your
support team will help you identify the job you want and prepare
for it. They can give you feedback on your strengths and areas for
development. They can help keep you focused when doubt creeps
in. These people play the roles of risk assessment, cheerleaders,
and coaches.
With the right support system, risk-taking becomes much easier.
For example, those racecar drivers are fully aware that driving at
such high speeds is dangerous. They don’t do it thinking that
they’ll never crash. In fact, professional drivers crash a lot. In
2019, NASCAR reported an average of three crashes per race .
Zoom out on any competitive racetrack, though, and you’ll see
coaches, mechanics, and emergency medical technicians on
standby to provide immediate support to injured drivers. Look at
the vehicles themselves, and you’ll find safety features that don’t
exist in commercially available cars. If your goal is to race
professionally, crashes are part of the job. Your support system
provides the tools to mitigate the risk of a negative outcome.
Working with a coach can help you build the confidence to take
more risks. But a coach also can help you determine which risks
to take, and when the right time is to take them.
How do you know when you
should take a risk?
When I think of weighing risks, I imagine an old-fashioned,
balance scale, weighing the pros and cons.
As I consider what should go on either side, I don’t think of the
best-case or worst-case scenario. I think about who I’ll become by
taking the risk. I think about whether the potential benefits are
worthwhile, and whether I have the tools to deal with failure.
The best risks to take are the ones that bring you into closer
alignment with your values and desires. For example, you might
be taking a risk by changing careers . But if the potential outcome is
less financial stress , more opportunities to do meaningful work,
and better work/life balance , then it’s a step worth taking.
That leap of faith — whether or not it results in the desired
outcome — brings you closer to who you want to be.
How to take calculated
risks
Risk-taking doesn’t mean “winging it.” The better you prepare,
the better your chances of success the first time around. Here are
4 steps to take better, calculated risks that have the best chance
of paying off:
How to take calculated risks
1. Develop a system for evaluating your risks
2. Make time for Inner Work®
3. Start small
4. Redefine failure
1. Develop a system for evaluating
your risks
When it comes to taking better risks, it’s important to be
thoughtful and strategic. Consider what you have to lose and
what you have to gain. Weigh the pros and cons. Talk through
your reasoning with a coach or trusted friend.
Remember that you’re not evaluating your risks by extremes.
You’re looking for the best way to reach a successful outcome.
Successful people consider many different paths forward, and
choose the one most in alignment with their values and goals.
2. Make time for Inner Work®
There are two components to risk: emotional and systematic. The
emotional part often takes place unconsciously. There are certain
things that we can’t even think about because they feel so scary.
Those probably aren’t the best risks to start with, but they’re
helpful to be aware of.
The more you systematically approach your risks with a strategy
in place for managing them, the more comfortable you’ll be
thinking through those emotionally triggering risks. A coach can
help you unpack what you’re afraid of and when the right time to
tackle it is.
3. Start small
You don’t have to take huge risks all the time. Building the habit
of taking small risks can pay off big as well.
If you’re the type of person who automatically equates risk with
danger, try changing your definition of risk. Think of it instead as
anything with the potential for uncertainty. You can increase your
risk tolerance in small ways, which can build the muscle to think
through — and eventually take on — bigger risks.
What constitutes a small risk? Look for anything that’s out of your
comfort zone . If you always order the same coffee, try getting
something new. If you always go to the same place for vacation,
try somewhere new. If you’re considering a career change, try
taking a class first. These might feel like small steps, but they’ll
help you get comfortable with being uncomfortable .
4. Redefine failure
Don’t be afraid of failure — it’s part of the process. If you’re not
failing, you’re not trying new things, and you’re not growing. The
trick is to learn from every outcome. Many times we learn just as
much — if not more — from failure than we do from success. A
study of Olympians found that, years after they competed, silver
medal winners tended to be happier and more resilient than gold medal
winners.
Feel the fear — and take
the risk anyway
When you first start learning how to take risks, it might be that
everything feels scary. But that’s okay. Your brain is trying to
keep you safe. You’ll have to prove to yourself that risk-taking
doesn’t need to be threatening — and that it can even be fun.
There are endless possibilities in the world, and the best way to
figure out what risks are right for you is to tune into your
intuition. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Even if something doesn't
work out as planned, you'll learn from it and grow as a person —
and that will help you build self-trust. Whether you’re moving to a
new city, starting a new job, or launching a new business, you’ll
know that you can handle whatever comes your way.
Weighing “good risk” is personal, but you don’t have to do it
alone. Reach out to BetterUp for support in both small and big
risks. A coach can provide you with a new perspective and the
support you need to take smart risks.
