Ques2: How can discrimination impact communities? What are ways
that we can challenge discrimination?
Ans 2: Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people and
this impacts communities by damaging the religious beliefs of people, their reputation, and making
people question the beliefs that they have. Effects of discriminatory practice are disempowerment, low
self-esteem and self-confidence. It can be in the form of Direct discrimination, Indirect discrimination,
Harassment and Victimisation. Discrimination can also be done in the form of Racism, Ageism, Religious
Discrimination, and Ableism. Direct discrimination is when a person is treating one person worse than
another person because of a protected characteristic. Indirect discrimination is when there is an
unreasonable rule or policy that is the same for everyone but has an unfair effect on people who share a
particular attribute. Harassment is offensive conduct of an unwelcome nature on the basis of any of the
characteristics identified, that includes verbal or physical abuse, threats, derogatory remarks, jokes,
innuendo or taunts about appearance or beliefs. Victimisation is treating someone badly because they
have done a 'protected act'. Racism prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual,
community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular
racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalised. Also, harassment by managers, co-
workers, or others in your workplace, because of your race, colour, religion, national origin, disability,
age, or genetic information. Ageism is prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age. For
example: an employer says that Harry’s job is being eliminated but then hires a younger employee to work
in the same capacity as him only with a different title. Religious Discrimination is treating individuals
differently because of their religious beliefs and practices, and/or their request for accommodations of
their religious beliefs and practices. It also includes treating individuals differently because of their lack of
religious beliefs or practices. For example: The bank refused Noah to give a loan to her because she was a
Jewish. Ableism is discrimination in favour of healthy people. For example: Healthy people using facilities
that are made for disabled people, such as parking spaces or bathrooms.
Discrimination can be identified when either of the following things happen:
1. Inappropriate Questions During a Job Interview,
2. Lack of Diversity,
3. Harsh or Demeaning Communications,
4. Unequal Pay,
5. Unfair Promotions
6. Unjust Disciplinary Actions
