• Parts of Computer–A Computer has four main

parts
o Monitor
o CPU (Central Processing Unit)
o Keyboard
o Mouse

• Hardware and Software

Hardware-
• Hardware refers to the physical parts of a
computer that you can see and touch.
• Hardware is further divided into four main
categories:
o Input Devices (Keyboard, Mouse,
Microphone)
o Output Devices (Monitor, Printer,
speaker)
o Storage Devices Internal (Hard disk)
o Components (Motherboard, RAM)
o When damaged, it can be replaced with a new
component.
o Hardware cannot be infected by Viruses.

Software-
• It refers to the programs and instructions
that tell the computer what to do.
• Software is further divided into two main
categories:
o Application Software (Word, Excel, Power
point)
o System Software (Window and its version,
LINUX, Android)
• When damaged it can be installed once more
using a backup copy.
• Software can be infected by virus.

• Working of computer
A system that consists of input, output and
the steps required to change the input into
output is called IPO cycle.
Input – Process – Output (IPO) Cycle.

• Input and Output devices and Processor.

Input Devices-
The devices that help us to give inputs or
data to a computer are called input devices.
Inputs can be in the form of symbols, letters,
numbers, pictures or sound.
Example: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner,
Joystick, Light Pen, Web Camera, Trackball.

Processor (CPU)-
• CPU is the processing device of a computer.
• CPU process on input or data which is called
processing.

Output Devices-
• The devices which give the result or
information after processing on input is called
Output device.
• When a computer completed the processing
the work we get the final result. This result
is called the Output.
Example: Monitor, Keyboard, Speakers,
Projector.

• Storage Devices -
• A Storage device is a device that stores data
to be used later.
• There are two types of storage device
o Internal Storage device (Primary)
o External Storage device (Secondary)

Internal Storage device (Primary) -

• The Storage device which used to store the
data or information inside the computer is
called Internal Storage device.
• A hard disk is a Storage device of a
computer. It is inside the CPU.
• It stores the information we feed to a
computer
Example: Hard disk

External Storage device (Secondary) -

• The Storage device which used to store the
data or information outside the computer is
called External Storage device.
• Example: Pen Drive, CD, DVD.

Automatic machines operate using electricity to perform tasks without manual intervention . Computers function on similar principles by automating data processing through electronic circuits, requiring minimal human effort to execute complex operations efficiently . This alignment facilitates tasks such as computation and communication using underlying programs and software, thus embodying the essence of automation where the input transforms into an output efficiently and accurately without continuous human input.

Hardware pertains to a computer's physical components that execute computing tasks, while software comprises the instructions and applications that direct these components . For innovations in computing to be fully realized, hardware must evolve to accommodate increasingly sophisticated software functionalities, which in turn directs advancements in hardware capabilities. This tandem evolution allows computers to meet the rising demand for performance, efficiency, and versatility in technology, necessary for developing complex applications and addressing security challenges.

The Input-Process-Output (IPO) model underpins the operation of computers by structuring how data is handled. Input devices gather information in various forms—text, numbers, images—that the processor evaluates and transforms into the desired results, output through devices like monitors and speakers . This model is crucial as it defines the workflow within computers, ensuring that data conversion is efficient, leading to accurate and timely outputs. The IPO model facilitates diverse applications from gaming to data analysis, by maintaining operational consistency and reliability.

The classification of computers into desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones mainly reflects user requirements and the contexts they are designed for. Desktops are powerful but less portable, suited for environments needing robust computing power . Laptops offer portability for users requiring computing on the go. Tablets provide touchscreen convenience and portability, ideal for light computing tasks and media consumption. Smartphones encompass communication and handheld computing capabilities, suitable for connectivity and tasks on the move . These classifications accommodate varied practical usage scenarios, balancing performance, convenience, and mobility.

Computers are characterized by their ability to perform tasks quickly and efficiently, their multifunctionality, and their requirement for electricity to operate . These features make them indispensable across various sectors: in education, they enable interactive learning and online research; in entertainment, they provide platforms for games and digital media; in healthcare, they facilitate patient record management and diagnostics . The rapid processing and versatility of computers allow them to be adapted for specific needs in each sector, enhancing productivity and access to information.

Hardware refers to the tangible components of a computer, such as the keyboard, mouse, and CPU, which are necessary for executing operations and user interactions . Software, on the other hand, consists of programs and instructions that guide the hardware in performing tasks . While hardware executes tasks, software provides the necessary commands and logic. This interdependency implies that hardware without software lacks functionality, and software without hardware lacks an execution platform. Together, they enable the computer to perform diverse tasks and services.

A manual machine relies on human or animal power, whereas an automatic machine operates on electricity, and an electrical machine functions with fuel or electricity . A computer is categorized as an automatic and electrical machine since it requires electricity to perform tasks and processes data electronically . Its function aligns with the characteristics of automatic and electrical machines as it executes programmed tasks independently of human physical effort.

In the Input-Process-Output (IPO) cycle, input devices such as keyboards and mice provide data to the computer system . The CPU processes this data, a phase referred to as processing. The results are then relayed via output devices like monitors and speakers, completing the cycle . The interaction between input and output devices is crucial as it facilitates the transformation of user inputs into meaningful information, reflecting the computer's utility in numerous tasks.

Manual machines rely on human or animal power, lacking the capability to perform tasks independently . Automatic machines, like computers, use electricity to execute tasks without significant human intervention . Understanding this evolution highlights how computers transitioned from mere calculating aids to automatic systems capable of complex data processing autonomously. The classification of machines underscores the technological advancements that have allowed computers to encapsulate the traits of automatic devices, fundamentally altering human interaction with technology.

Internal storage devices, such as hard disks, reside within the computer and store essential operating data used in immediate tasks . External storage devices like pen drives and DVDs provide additional capacity and portability for data that may not be needed during immediate operations . While internal storage ensures quick access to vital data and applications, external storage facilitates backup options and data transfer between systems, thereby complementing internal storage by extending control over data management and accessibility.
