You are a taxi sales representative and you will need to find the best taxi for a new student at
Chatsworth International School. The new students will be sightseeing after school for 3 days
at three different locations. For safety purposes, the student is required to use taxis on their
own (Grab is not allowed). You need to investigate taxi companies (Comfort Degro, SMRT,
TransCab, Yellow-top taxi, etc...) and identify which is the best option. You can present a
brochure, google slides, a poster or a written report.

Goal: You will investigate what is the best taxi company to visit the following locations. Use the
rates available on the next page.

Location A: You will be going to Sentosa (Siloso Beach) from School

Location B: You will Chijmes for dinner from School

Location C: You will be going to Botanical Gardens to look at Orchids from School

Role: Taxi sales representative.

Audience: Chatsworth students

Situation: As a sales representative you need to provide the customer (new student) with a
comfortable taxi option

Product: You will provide your customer with a brochure, google slides (max of 6 slides, only 6
slides will be marked), a poster or written report about your findings. (hint: explain your data
and graphs) The criteria does not count as part of your work, it must be included in your final
product.

Choosing the right transportation: for Chatsworth!

A new student at Chatsworth wants to go sightseeing for three days. All journeys will start at
Chatsworth International School. I am suggesting three taxi companies, ComfortDelGro, Yellow top
and SMRT Taxis because I think that these are all pretty popular taxi service providers and it will
make the new student feel safe knowing that these are reputable taxis. In my personal experience,
ComfortDelGro is the best as there are a lot of Comfort taxis that you can flag down very easily. I
have picked the second company, Yellow-top taxis, as those types of taxis are going out of style and
will probably go away. I chose the third company, SMRT Taxis as SMRT is already reputable for
their train services, which is the most used mode of transportation in Singapore.

The three destinations the student needs to go to are Sentosa (Siloso Beach), Botanical
Gardens, and Chijmes. Sentosa (Siloso Beach) is 18.2km from Chatsworth International School.
Botanical Gardens is 8.2km from Chatsworth International School. Chijmes is 10.8km from
Chatsworth International School. I need to select which is the best taxi company in terms of price for
the new student. I rounded up the distances to whole numbers as plotting decimal numbers proved to
be quite challenging for me.

A linear equation is an equation in which the highest power of a variable is 1. y=ax+ b where
a , b , and y are constants and a is not equal to 0. The Cartesian coordinate system is used to describe
the position of the points on a plane. The rectangular or Cartesian plane is formed by two
perpendicular lines which intersect at the origin which is denoted by the letter ‘O’. The horizontal
axis is called the x -axis and the vertical axis is the y -axis. Points on the graph are represented using
coordinates.

I will find the distance by using Google Maps and creating a linear equation. Right now, I am
interpreting a real-life situation. It helps me remember the basic concept of a linear equation
y=ax+ b, with a being the slope and b being the y-intercept. Everyone knows when you get into a
taxi, they charge you a certain amount for just getting in the taxi and they charge you per kilometre. I
have rounded all of the distances and kept the prices the same. Using a scale of 1 unit to represent 5
kilometres on the x -axis and 1 unit represent 5 dollars on the y -axis for all the graphs.

Our first option, ComfortDelGro. Let x be every kilometre driven and let y be the total
amount owed. The linear equation for this table is y=0.65 x +3.95 ,. I have plotted a graph with the
the pair of values ( x , y )and joined them in a straight line. The cost of going to the Botanical Gardens
is 9.15 SGD, Chijmes is 11.10 SGD and Sentosa (Siloso Beach) is 15.65 SGD. Here is my table to
show the prices:

Distance Working out Price in SGD

0 3.95 3.95

5 (0.65∗5)+ 3.95 7.20

BG: 8.2 ≈8 (0.65∗8)+3.95 9.15

10 (0.65∗10)+3.95 10.45

Chijmes: 10.8 ≈11 (0.65∗11)+3.95 11.10

15 (0.65∗15)+3.95 13.70

Siloso: 18.2 ≈18 (0.65∗18)+3.95 15.65

The second (the least known) company that's slowly going out of style is Yellow-top Taxis.
Even though it is less popular it is still a good option in terms of price, The base charge (the y -
intercept) is 4.10 SGD and 0.60 is the amount charged per kilometre (slope). The linear equation is
y=0.60 x + 4.10, we need to let x be every kilometre driven and let y be the total amount owed. The
interpretation of the equation is the product of 0.60 with the number and then added to 4.10. To have
a better understanding of my data, I have made a table. The cost of going to the Botanical Gardens is
8.90 SGD, The cost of going to Chijmes is 10.70 SGD,Sentosa (Siloso Beach) is 14.90 SGD. Take a
look at the table:

Distance Working out Price in SGD

0 4.10 4.10

5 (0.60∗5)+4.10 7.10

BG: 8.2 ≈ 8 (0.60∗8)+4.10 8.90

10 (0.60∗10)+4.10 10.10

Chijmes: 10.8 ≈ 11 (0.60∗11)+4.10 10.70

15 (0.60∗15)+4.10 13.10

Siloso: 18.2 ≈ 18 (0.60∗18)+4.10 14.90

Let’s take a look at our third option, SMRT Taxis. Let x be every kilometre driven and let y
be total amount owed. The linear equation is y=0.60 x + 4.00, let x be every kilometre driven and let
y be the total amount owed. The interpretation of the equation is the product of 0.60 with the number
and then added to 4. . I have tabulated a table and plotted the pair of values ( x , y )and joined them in
a straight line to plot the graph. The cost of going to the Botanical Gardens is 8.80 SGD. The cost of
going to Chijmes is 10.60 SGD. The cost of going to Sentosa (Siloso Beach) is 14.80 SGD.

Firstly to make my data visual, I have created a graph to compare all the taxi companies, with
three lines:

In the graph we have the 3 taxi companies. I have observed that the ComfortDelGro has the
steepest line which shows that it is the most expensive. Yellow-top Taxis, and SMRT Taxis are
almost the same with SMRT just being slighty cheaper than Yellow-top. The scale of this graph is
equal to x axis > 5 units = 5km and y axis > 5 units = 5 SGD.

Just in case the graph was confusing and/or hard to read, I have also created a table showing
each taxi company and the prices to go to each place as well as the total cost. The table states the
following:

Botanic Gardens Chijmes Sentosa (Siloso TOTAL COST (for

Beach) each company)
ComfortDelGro SGD 9.15 SGD 11.10 SGD 15.65 SGD 35.90

Yellow-top SGD 8.90 SGD 10.70 SGD 14.90 SGD 34.50

SMRT SGD 8.80 SGD 10.60 SGD 14.80 SGD 34.20

Looking at this data, as a taxi sales representative I would highly recommend SMRT taxis as
the taxi service provider because it has over 3000 taxi cabs and it is known for its punctuality. If you
are looking for the most reliable, luxurious and comfortable taxi I would recommend ComfortDelGro
Taxis, as they’re very easy to hail, and the cabs are all sedans with very good aircon. Yellow-top
taxis are very low in numbers so finding one near you will be very difficult.

Overall, SMRT Taxis are definitely the best for students in terms of price and comfort. The
price of SMRT Taxis is cheaper than ComfortDelGro and Yellow-top Taxis.
