Supercapacitors as Energy Storage Devices
Supercapacitors Introduction
A supercapacitor is a type of capacitor that can store a large amount of energy—typically 10 to 100 times
more energy per unit of volume of mass compared to electrolytic capacitors. Also known as ultracapacitors,
supercapacitors work at relatively low voltages but can be connected in series to produce bigger voltages for
applications requiring more power.
Supercapacitors can accept charge and deliver extreme power very rapidly. They can cycle hundreds of
thousands of times, have a broader operating temperature, and can live much longer and more predictably
than [Link] are also extremely reliable.
Unlike conventional capacitors, supercapacitor electrodes are normally composed of high surface-area
materials such as carbon particle materials with a porous separator in between. They are filled with an
electrolyte, typically a polar solvent with complex salts dissolved in it, which forms an ionic conductive
connection between the two electrodes. This creates an electric double layer interface that has much higher
surface area and much smaller charge separation distance than dielectric capacitors, and thus can store
significantly more charge.

Supercapacitors as Energy Storage Devices
Comparison to Batteries
Shown here is a Ragone chart comparing the specific energy and specific power of supercapacitors (aka
ultracapacitors) to various battery types and conventional capacitors. As illustrated, ultracapacitors are in
between batteries and conventional capacitors in terms of their energy density and power density.
Compared to batteries, supercapacitors have higher specific power but lower specific energy. Compared to a
Li-ion battery, supercapacitors have about 1/100th the energy density but about 10 times the power density.

Supercapacitors as Energy Storage Devices
Supercapacitors have better life expectancy, cycle capability and charge/discharge storage efficiency, as well
as a broader operating temperature range—with specifically better low temperature performance.
Supercapacitors have a higher initial cost, so they are best used in applications where battery replacement
cost is high, or in very high cycle conditions, or in places where high reliability and predictability are needed.
Types of Supercapacitors
Supercapacitors, compared to batteries, can be grouped into three families—electrostatic double-layer
capacitors, pseudocapacitors and hybrid capacitors.
• Electrostatic double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) use carbon electrodes and rely primarily on electrostatic
double-layer capacitance rather than electrochemical pseudocapacitance, achieving separation of charge
in a Helmholtz double layer at the interface between the surface of a conductive electrode and an
electrolyte. The separation of charge is of the order of a few angstroms (0.3–0.8 nm), much smaller
than in a conventional capacitor.
• Electrochemical pseudocapacitors use metal oxide or conducting polymer electrodes with a high amount of
electro chemical pseudocapacitance additional to the double-layer capacitance. Pseudocapacitance
is achieved by Faradaic electron charge-transfer with redox reactions, intercalation or electrosorption.
• Hybrid capacitors, such as the lithium-ion capacitor, use electrodes with differing characteristics — one
exhibiting mostly electrostatic capacitance and the other exhibiting mostly electrochemical capacitance.

Supercapacitor Charging / Discharging
Charging Overview
Charging a supercapacitor is simple, with two important caveats. The first is voltage. Supercapacitors should
not be charged beyond their rated voltage. The specified voltage for a single cell can range between 2.4 V to
3 V, depending on the electrolyte and other materials. The typical voltage spec is 2.7 V per cell for an EDLC
using ACN as the polar solvent in the electrolyte. Charging a supercapacitor beyond its rated voltage will
cause the electrolyte to break down, significantly reducing life, and potentially venting the cell. When charging
a cell or string of cells, the charger should be designed to stop charging when the specified voltage is reached.
The second consideration is current. A supercapacitor can absorb power very rapidly,
and if the charge source is not current-limited to protect it, the charger can be damaged.
The charger for a system using supercapacitors is typically designed for the specific power
and voltage needed.
A common battery charger could also be used by adding a headlamp bulb in series with
the charge circuit to act as a current limiter. The bulb would also be an indicator of the state of
charge of the capacitor, because as the capacitor voltage increases, the bulb will dim, until the
voltage output of the charger and the capacitor are equal and the bulb goes out (see diagram below).
Connecting the charger directly, without the bulb, would probably not work, as these types of chargers
have short circuit protection and will shut down. A supercapacitor at zero volts looks like a direct short.

6
Supercapacitor Charging / Discharging
For higher voltage and power ranges, more specialized chargers are needed.
Bonitron has a number of charger models designed to charge ultracapacitor
strings from numerous AC input voltages, ranging from 160-253VAC to
277-506VAC, with output voltages from 175 to 600VDC, and currents from
10 to 20A.
Discharging Overview
Discharging a supercapacitor can be accomplished with a resistive
load or an electronic load. If a resistive load is used, caution is needed
to insure that the load can handle the voltage and the current without
overheating and causing damage. Wire wound resistors or high
wattage incandescent bulbs are simple ways to do this.
Bonitron has designed a discharger for large capacitor banks, the M3628
series, that can be used with systems from 400 to 600 VDC and energy
ranges from 350 to 4000 kJ. An example is the M3628T-H075-M4.
Supercapacitor Measurement
The most important measurements for a supercapacitor are capacitance,
equivalent series resistance (ESR) and leakage current. Accurate
measurement of these parameters requires specialized equipment.
Typically, this is programmable equipment capable of producing
high constant current while measuring voltage and time. Battery
test equipment is commonly used. IEC standards are available for
measuring these values as are various OEM procedures. Bonitron
has portable measurement equipment available. An example is the
M3628PUT-U07-110.

Useful Supercapacitor Equations
Example:
The stored energy of a string of 18 – 3000F 2.7V
supercapacitor cells can be calculated by first
STORED ENERGY calculating the string capacitance, and string voltage.
The capacitance would be 3000F per cell / 18 cells =
Ejoules = 1/2 * C * V2 166.7F for the string or ~165F. The string voltage would
Watt Hours = Joules / 3600 be 2.7 volts per cell * 18 cells in series = 48.6 or ~ 48
volts. The stored energy would be = ½ * 165F * 482
= 190,080 joules. To put this in watt hours, divide the
joules by 3600 = 52.8 Wh.
Example:
Let us say that a ½ watt is needed for 24 hours in a
CAPACITANCE REQUIRED power back up application, that requires a voltage range
for a given storage requirement of 16 to 8 volts. To determine the capacitance needed
you would first convert the watt hours to joules = ½ watt
C = (2 * Ejoules) / (Vstart2 - Vend2) * 24 hours * 3600 seconds, or 43,200 joules. Then
using the formula of capacitance = (2* 43,200) / (162-
Watt Hours = Joules / 3600 82) = 450 farads. Based on off-the-shelf modules, a 16V
500F module would be needed. At a cell level, this would
be 6 – 3000F cells in series.

Wind Turbine UPS Retrofit Solutions
LICAP Technologies has partnered with Windurance LLC to develop an ultracapacitor retrofit solution to
replace the existing battery-based energy storage and charger system in GE 30Nm & 20Nm wind turbine
pitch battery boxes. It is designed as a “drop in” replacement not requiring any modification to the pitch control
system box or operating system. The ultracapacitor modules and capacitor charger unit (CCU) are common
across the different pitch box iterations with only harness, bracket & mounting accommodations.
