CURRENT SITUATION OF THE BEEKEEPING SECTOR

1.1. Identification of the Sector CIIU code

Beekeeping is part of the primary sector, it is aeconomic activitywhat

is related to the transformation of thenatural resources in products
unprocessed primary products. The CIIU code used for this activity is
0149 which includes "Beekeeping and production of honey and wax and bees."

The Colombian beekeeping sector currently presents itself as a guild in

development that, despite reporting its beginnings from the time of the conquest
begins to develop from the 1990s and after several
restructuring in production systems, in response to changes in
genetics, pest attacks, reduction of producers, etc., which added to the
unsatisfied market and the low utilization of the biophysical environment for the
installation of hives, of which only 10% has been used (Vásquez &
Tello Druran, 1995), allow to establish that it is urgent to work on the
promotion of this activity in order to solve the main problems that
Historically, they have limited the development and promotion of it at the national level;
given the potential and positive impacts of beekeeping to generate employment,
improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of rural areas, increase the
productivity and competitiveness of commercial crops as well as the benefits
environmental effects of pollination.

It is estimated that Colombia has around 2,100 beekeepers, distributed throughout

the entire country, with the most important regions being Santander, Magdalena,
Sucre, Cauca, Huila, Antioquia, Boyacá, and Cundinamarca. In the case of the
warm zones usually the main product obtained corresponds to honey and
In the coldest areas of the Cundiboyacense highlands, beekeepers have
specialized in pollen production. The producers stated that their
income depends exclusively on the handling of insects and it is common that the
producers make agreements with the landowners in exchange for a
rent that is paid in cash or in kind; In this respect, it is observed
even if a producer has beehives on his property, as the number increases
number of hives, is forced to look for new sites outside of their premises,
so it can be inferred that if there is a growth in inventory of
apiaries of the producers, a large part of this will be located on low-lying land
some form of rental.

In Colombia, the beekeeping chain and apiculture is made up of

the production of honey, pollen, propolis, wax, jelly, and larvae, however, the greatest
part of the production has focused on honey, which has not yet been
considered competitive for the agricultural development of the country, still
when it is an activity that generates great benefits for the environment and
the sector, thanks to the pollinating action of bees, which through
this process accelerates the productive development of several crops. Globally,
the production, trade, and consumption of honey has been increasing in the
last 20 years, because it is a product of 100% natural origin that has
benefits for human consumption due to their high medicinal components.

As for the industrial link, it is not yet established in the country.

Formally, the beekeeping industry lacks suitable production technology.
for marketing purposes since most beekeepers
they are peasants, traditional techniques that do not take into account are still used
sanitary standards required for their market. For this reason, in 2004, it was created
the National Federation of Beekeepers of Colombia (FENAPICOL), through the
what is expected, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development,
consolidate and promote the chain in the country.

1.2. Characteristics of the Beekeeping Sector

Beekeeping production is the ability to take advantage of natural resources outside
from the property to which it belongs, which is why producers, when setting up the hives,
they must carefully consider the floral offer, use of agrochemicals and even the
perception of bees that the owners of neighboring properties have of them
apiaries.

Beekeeping activity is its ability to develop in hillside areas where

other types of activities become difficult, achieving economic benefits in
areas where it is not possible to develop other activities without deterioration of
drastic way the ecosystem.

In the case of Colombia, the most important apicultural product is honey, the
the composition of it may vary depending on factors such as the state of
the colony or the collection methods, but most of its characteristics
they depend on the floral origin of the nectar used in the production of honey by
part of the bees. Honey is attributed with medicinal properties.

The second apicultural product of productive importance in Colombia is pollen.

which compared to honey, is less developed, both in post technology
harvest as in importance within the global market, is considered as
a product with great potential for the country.

The current production volumes are consumed in the country, however the
accelerated growth in the number of hives generates the need to visualize
new market opportunities and establishing clear quality standards
chords with international standards. (Martínez, 2006).

1.3. Productive Chains

From the management of bees, a variety of products can be obtained for...
for human consumption, food type (royal jelly, honey) and medicinal (propolis).
There are also farmers responsible for the breeding of bees (larvae) for the
production and distribution of pollen among their crops.

Honey: Bees collect the nectar secreted by plants, which after

going through a process of liquid transformation carried out by the bee, it is
deposited by the latter in the hives, where its process ends.
final biochemical transformation. This product contains minerals (iron, calcium and
vitamins) and amino acids.

Pollen: It is a grain collected by bees during their collection process.

of nectar. Given its medicinal properties derived from its components
natural chemicals rich in vitamins and minerals.

Propolis: It is a product made from resins and balms collected by

the bees of the trees. It is mixed with wax and pollen. This product acts
as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, etc., thanks to its
natural components rich in minerals, volatile oils, vitamins, among others.

Jales Real: It is a product secreted by the glands of young bees, which

it contains a high vitamin value, with which the larvae and the bee are fed
queen. Is this product the generator of a shorter reproductive process of the
queen bees.

Bee venom, produced by bees, is not commonly traded.

the country, its cost is high as the quantities that can be collected are
small and its extraction significantly alters the bees. Bee venom is
used in apitherapy.
In addition to the previous products, biological material is included, understood
such as live material (queen bees, colonies, bee packages, semen, and
any other live bee product), which comply with existing regulations, and
adjusts to the set of regulations, guidelines established by each country.

4. CONCLUSIONS

The beekeeping chain in Colombia has been characterized by presenting low

production levels and therefore, low market insertion level
worldwide.

The little credibility in the business and the low knowledge in development
they have not favored its development in the country. However,
currently, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, we
create the Technical Secretariat of the Beekeeping Chain, together with FENAPICOL, it

hopes to promote the development of the chain by advancing

research programs for bee management.

Marginal populations of the country are being encouraged to venture into

beekeeping production, as it has been considered to be an activity that
it benefits not only their income but agriculture as a whole

According to feasibility studies conducted, it has been found that the

Africanized bee (the premier honey producer) adapts to the
different climates existing in the country.
