I. INTRODUCTION
Structural analysis is a fundamental discipline in civil engineering and the
architecture that is responsible for evaluating and understanding the behavior of the
structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams, and other construction elements, under
various loads and conditions. To carry out an effective structural analysis, you
they use a variety of methods and techniques, and among the most prominent are
they find the matrix methods.
Matrix methods in structural analysis are a mathematical approach
advanced that has become the backbone of structural engineering
modern. These methods allow for addressing structural analysis problems of
efficiently and accurately, which is essential for designing safe structures and
efficient in terms of cost and materials.
The fundamental basis of matrix methods in structural analysis is the
representation of the structure as a system of linear equations. This implies
divide the structure into smaller elements, such as beams, columns, or plates, and
then describe the relationships between displacements, forces, and moments
in each of these elements in terms of matrix equations. These
equations can be assembled into a global matrix that represents the whole
structure, and from it, displacements, forces and
the moments at each point of the structure using linear algebra techniques.
One of the most well-known matrix methods in structural analysis is the method
of finite elements (FEA, for its acronym in English), which has revolutionized the way
in which engineering problems are addressed. In the FEA, a structure is divided
in a finite element mesh, and a set of matrix equations is applied
that represent the behavior of each element and the interactions between them.
This method is especially powerful because it allows modeling structures
complexes with exceptional precision, making it a tool
essential in the design of modern structures and in the evaluation of their strength and
security.
3
Another important matrix method is the direct stiffness method, which is based on the
representation of the structure as a set of elements connected by
nodes. Each element is characterized by its stiffness matrix, which describes its
behavior under known loads. When assembling all the stiffness matrices
from the elements and applying the boundary conditions, the can be solved
displacements and forces in the structure efficiently.
Matrix methods in structural analysis offer several advantages.
significant, such as the ability to model complex systems, the possibility of
analyze non-linear structures and the ability to assess dynamic behavior
of structures under dynamic loads such as earthquakes or wind. In addition, they allow
conduct optimization analysis to minimize the use of materials and costs
construction, which is fundamental in modern engineering oriented to the
sustainability.
Matrix methods in structural analysis are a cornerstone of the
civil engineering and modern architecture. These advanced mathematical methods
allow engineers to model and analyze structures accurately and
efficient, which is essential to ensure the safety and performance of the
structures in a constantly evolving world. Its application extends from the
initial conception of the design to the evaluation of existing structures, which
demonstrates its ongoing importance in contemporary structural engineering.

II. DEVELOPMENT
Matrix methods
Being structural analysis the backbone of the engineer's raison d'être
civil, it is necessary to deepen, encourage, and update our knowledge in the
different modern methods and techniques that can be applied to determine the
different structural variables that are present in engineering. It is here where the
science and technology aim to overwhelm us with their speed and rapid advancement,
that is why the need to understand the methods, procedures, and techniques used
due to modern application software that develops all kinds of structures
using the matrix method and in the most comprehensive case, finite element analysis.
Currently, the teaching of this method in some schools is a reality.
of engineering, with the education established in the graduate schools of the
University of Engineering, Private University of Applied Sciences and in the
undergraduate curricula of the universities of Europe, North America and in
South America in the Colombian School of Engineering. The method is simple and
systematic, making it repetitive and tedious, however, with the help of the
computer we achieve speed and accuracy in the results. It seems ironic that the
todays students can learn the theories and principles in a few months
of the structural analysis that humanity took thousands of years to develop. Without
Despite using modern technology, the most important thing is that the engineer;
identify, evaluate and interpret results from the analysis, as well as recognize
the causes and effects that occur from loads acting on a structure.

2. General Considerations
With matrix calculation methods, information is organized in a way
of matrices. For its understanding, it is important to have knowledge
algebraic of matrices and fundamental theorems of classical calculus
structures.
This can be done automatically using programs like SAP and ETABS.
having prior knowledge of the programs, which has facilitated their development
and it has become a common practice in engineering.
3. Computational Implementation
The matrix stiffness method is still one of the tools today.
more effective and efficient, both for analysis and for structural design in
different areas of engineering, starting with civil engineering such as automotive engineering,
aerospace, mechanics, etc. One of the greatest advantages and particularities of
the method is for problems with complex geometries and boundary conditions
they can be treated individually by reducing their complexity by dividing them into
small subdomains, called "finite elements".
The implementation of the method has allowed for a reduction in time and costs in design and
redesign of structures, machines, and mechanical devices. Because in the

engineering with great success, it is essential that students of a degree in
engineering, especially those who are dedicated to the design of structural systems,
mechanical, fluid transport, and electrical, know their fundamentals and
different applications.
For the above reason, one of the basic applications of the analysis method is presented.
matrix, which is the calculation of structures in two dimensions, which are so
widely used for the construction of mechanical support systems,
armors, the construction of boards in bridges and platforms.
In addition, the practical utility of programming in Matlab for modeling problems
engineering such as in the present case the modeling of software that resolves
two-dimensional structures; in order to have a greater
understanding the functioning of the matrix method without having to use software
specialized commercial.

III. CONCLUSIONS
We conclude that structural analysis is fundamental in civil engineering.
architecture as it encompasses the behavior of structures such as
various loads and conditions.
We identified that matrix methods in structural analysis are a
advanced mathematical approach since it is the fundamental basis in analysis
structural and representation of the structure as a system of equations
lineal.
We determine that there are 2 methods most commonly used in structural analysis that
one is the finite method as it allows modeling complex structures with a
great precision and the other method is called direct stiffness which is based on the
representation of the structure as a set of connected elements
by nodes.
Finally, we obtained several advantages that have the ability to model.
complex systems and also allows analyzing the minimum cost usage for the
use of materials in construction.
