Electronic Fuel Injection Overview

The document describes the electronic fuel injection system for gasoline and diesel engines. It explains that electronic injection doses the fuel through sensors and a control unit to optimize performance and reduce pollutant emissions. It also describes the types of electronic injection based on how they measure the amount of incoming air and how the system operates to control fuel injection according to the engine's conditions.

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM

Electronic injection is a form offuel injectionso much for

gasoline engines, in which it has already been established for several decades, as to
diesel engines, whose introduction is relatively more recent.

gasoline injection injectors, with their fuel rail It can

subdivide into several types (single point, multipoint, sequential, simultaneous) but
basically all are based on the help of theelectronicsto dose the
injection offueland reduce emissions ofcontaminating agentsto the
atmosphere and at the same time optimize consumption. This system has replaced the
carburetoringasoline [Link] introduction was due to an increase in
the demands of the regulatory bodies ofthe environmentto reduce the
emissionsof himthe engines.

Foundation

The function of injection in gasoline engines is:

Measure the air from the environment that is drawn in by the engine, controlled
by the driver through the butterfly, depending on themotor load
necessary in each case, in order to adapt the fuel flow to
this measurement and according to the engine operating regime,
to dose the amount of fuel required by this through injection
amount of air necessary for combustion to be as complete as possible
possible, that is to say keeping the proportion as much as possible
stoichiometric, within the limits ofl factor lambda.
Complete the combustion function along with the engine ignition.

In diesel engines, adjusting the amount of diesel injected based on the

motor load (accelerator pedal), synchronizing it with the engine speed and the order
of the cylinder ignition. In the case of the diesel engine, the air supply
it is not controlled by the driver, only the fuel one. It consists of
fundamentally ofsensorsaelectronic control unitand actuatorso
actuators.
Gasoline injection operation

The operation is based on the measurement of certain parameters of

functioning of the engine, such as: ethe air flow, engine regime (these
two are the most basic), and they are the ones that determine themotor load, that is to say the
necessary combustion force to obtain aper motor, that is one
determined power.

On the other hand, the fuel must be supplied at about 2.5 - 3.5 bar to the
injectors, this is achieved with aelectric pumplocated at the exit ofthe deposito
inside it. Additionally, other data is taken into account, such as the
air and refrigerant temperature, the load state (MAP sensor) in the
motorcycleturbocharged enginesposition ofthe butterflyand quantity ofoxygenin the
exhaust gases(sensor EGOoLambda),among others. These signals are
processed by the control unit, resulting in signals that are
they transmit to the actuators(injectors)that control the fuel injection
and other parts of the engine to achieve improved combustion, having
always consider the air/fuel ratios, that is, the lambda factor.

Types of EFI

There are two types of EFI systems that are classified by the detection method.
the amount of incoming air.

L-EFI (TYPE OF AIR FLOW CONTROL)

This type uses an airflow meter to detect the amount of air that is
introduce into the intake manifold. There are two types of detection methods:
One directly measures the mass of the incoming air and the other makes corrections.
based on the volume of air.

2. D-EFI (TYPE OF COLLECTOR PRESSURE CONTROL)

This type measures the pressure in the intake manifold to detect the amount of
input air area using the density of the input air.
INTRODUCTION

The Fundamental Reason for Electronic Management in the Injection System

Fuel is based on better control of vehicle emissions, this
means that it minimizes the pollutants emitted by the
Vehicle, complying with the regulations ofAIRCLEAN" issued by
International Organizations. In conclusion, Electronic Management applied to
Fuel Injection System is a sophisticated Control System
Emissions.
CONCLUSIONS

The results are transmitted as signals to the actuators or

actuators that control, according to the general state of the engine, the
injection of a certain amount of fuel, also taking care of
achieve complete combustion.

One of the characteristics of this injection system is the dosing.

of fuel, in addition to the considerable decrease in emission
from toxic gases to the environment.

It constitutes a system that is much more friendly to the environment than the
classic system with the carburetor.
