Deontological case

We must not forget the principles

In the ICU of a provincial clinic, a nurse who has been there for a long time
time in service, prepare the medications that correspond to be supplied to the
patients at 15:00 hrs. After a long 12-hour shift and due to a lack of staff
sufficient in the clinic, it should have bent, which ultimately meant a great risk
for the patients and for her, as the level of fatigue reached led her to commit
several mistakes, which, due to her ability and commitment, are not usual for her.
While engaged in this work and, due to a moment of fatigue, breaks a

that assuming the cost of the medication, decides not to administer the medication to the
patient and registers it as if he had done it, thinking that this would cover the damage
and would avoid a reprimand from their immediate boss. However, after a few
hours, the patient began to have severe respiratory problems due to lack
of lidocaine. Finally, the patient survives thanks to the timely intervention of the
medical staff and the cardiopulmonary resuscitation he was subjected to. Thus, with the
patient out of vital danger and with no internal summary for which they can be accused,
the nurse kept her performance silent, although she promised herself that she would never

ETHICAL ISSUES INVOLVED: RESPONSIBILITY AND DIALOGUE

Evidently we are facing a case of irresponsibility on the part of the

nurse, on whom the responsibility for patient care falls and for
part of the institution that, due to not having enough nursing staff, must
to double the shift of many of them, which, due to physical exhaustion, lowers their quality
of attention. One must think that when speaking of responsibility, basically
we refer to a moral value that the human being must develop and that allows him
to respond for their actions; first in view of their motivation or purpose, and then in
views on its consequences. This means that a responsible person thinks carefully.
the things before making a decision or not. In this case, the moral responsibility does not
not only about the nurse, but also about the institution, which ultimately
will end up placing the weight of the fault on the nurse, who in turn must accept
the shift due to the pressure of losing his job. In this sense, the dialogue also
acts as a relevant moral value, since due to a lack of it, the nurse commits a
double error: On one hand, not exposing his physical exhaustion that prevents him from working double shifts and,
on the other hand, having stopped supplying the medication. In these cases, what should
Trust is fundamental to express viewpoints to the boss or the management of
the institution. Once the medication was broken, the nurse should have reported the case
to their immediate supervisor for replacement and to avoid endangering the patient's life. The
having to pay for the cost of the medication is less serious than the guilt it generates
by putting the patient's life at risk.

DENOUEMENT

one month after what happened. In this conversation, the dialogue between the colleagues
concluded that she should have by no means remained silent about the fact, and, what is
worse, having reported the supply of this. Fortunately for the nurse, the patient
overcame the crisis presented and is at home enjoying a 'normal' life.
As a result of the conversation, both believe that communication channels should be opened.
inside the clinic to avoid situations like these, which, due to lack of dialogue and
because employees are not allowed to give their opinion on how the clinic operates, they spend
the things that happen. The nurse continues working at the clinic and keeps folding her
shifts by order of superiors, but has launched a campaign of
raising awareness within the clinic about the dangers of having staff who
has a direct relationship with the patients worked under those conditions. At a minimum, and
in the search for a solution to the problems that may arise, the
