SRS Sensors in Automotive Safety Systems

This document presents information about the SRS system and its sensors in vehicles. It briefly describes the objective of identifying the sensors and their location to enhance passenger safety. It explains that the ECU controls the system by detecting impacts and activating airbags and pretensioners. Finally, it details three key components: the ECU, the SRS module connector, and the side impact sensors, including their function, location, and required care.

5. Development and presentation of the results:

Selected Vehicle is theVolkswagen Tiguan.

➢ 5.1 ECU SRS SYSTEM:

The control unit is the core of the airbag system and is located in the center of the vehicle. Normally
It is located in the instrument panel area, in the zone called central tunnel. All vehicles
modern ones have a safety system called SRS Airbag, which consists of inflatable bags
that in case of accidents they are expelled to protect the driver and its occupants as a system of
support for seat belts. The airbag, when deployed, also activates the
pretensioners of the seat belts.

This system is controlled by an electronic unit or control unit, which records all the data
related to the vehicle and the damages it has suffered. When the Airbag system is activated the
the electronic control unit is then rendered useless, as the accident data remains
stored in the memory of your vehicle's computer.

Normally, diagnostic equipment is not capable of reconstructing data or cleaning it.

these errors, as occurs in other modules, and the vehicle owner has to acquire a new one
command unit since the current one is not recoverable, which often reflects in high expenditure
for its repair.

Fulfill the following functions:

• Accident detection.
• Timely detection of the signals emitted by the sensors.
• Timely activation of the necessary ignition circuits.
• Power supply of the ignition circuits through the capacitor,
• Auto diagnosis of the entire system.
• Record of the faults that occurred in the failure memory.
• Illumination of the airbag control warning light if the system fails.
• Connection to other control units via CAN-Bus.

In modern control units, information is stored that has been obtained thanks to various
tests that simulate accidents. They allow the classification of the accident by its severity level.

The following classifications are made:

• Severity 0 = minor accident; no airbags have been deployed.

• Severity 1 = medium severity accident; it is possible that the airbags have deployed.
a first phase.
• Severity 2 = serious accident; the airbags have been deployed in the first phase.
• Severity 3 = very serious accident; the airbags have been deployed in the first and second.
phase.

Frequent breakdowns:
• The airbag has deployed.
• Airbag light is flashing.
• Airbag failure due to a voltage spike in the power supply.
• Airbag light on even without having had an accident or collision.

What do we do?
• Diagnosis of the airbag unit to determine if restoration is feasible.
• Electronic repair of internal software.
• Replacement of components and programming of the microprocessor.

➢ 5.2 SRS Module Connector:

Function: It is a device that serves to connect the ABS module and the sensors.

Location: Its location will depend on the vehicle. But generally, it is found in the nearby area.
to the address column.

Care that should be taken in its handling: When handling the connector, that is if we need to
disconnect the module, we must disconnect the battery from the system.
11

➢ 5.3 Side Impact Sensors:

Function: This type of sensor responds to lateral inertia forces, detecting the impact and transmitting
this information to the control unit. The signal must match that of the safety sensor
to proceed with the detonation.

Location: Its location varies by manufacturer, but it is located on the door thresholds.

Care that should be taken in its handling: The care that should be taken is to disconnect the
battery and wait a corresponding time, then be careful when measuring its resistance and not
measure directly to avoid activation, but rather measure at the sensor located at the door.

Measurement: The sensor measurement showed 18.32Ω.

12

➢ 5.4 Seat Occupancy Sensor:

For better identification of the airbag wires and plugs, these are of a color
very striking yellow. Inside the sockets there is a bridge for short circuits that
prevent the airbag from being activated involuntarily when performing any tasks on them.
This could occur, for example, if there was static charge. The bridge for short circuits is a
contact that, when disconnecting the plug, connects the two contacts inside the plug, with it
that potential falls could be avoided.
13

➢ 5.5 Front Impact Sensor:

Function: This sensor measures the deceleration that occurs in a frontal or oblique collision.
vertical direction of the car. Upon detecting this frontal deceleration, the ECU intervenes to activate
different systems for driver safety such as pretensioners at 15 m/s,
airbag 30 m/s or lateral airbags 25 m/s, etc. Therefore, this sensor is one of the most important when
frontal impact as it determines the activation of airbag systems and their components.

Location: Its location varies by manufacturer and is normally found on the back of
the bumper cover, or on the bumper itself.

Care that must be taken in its handling: The precautions that should be taken are to disconnect the
battery and wait for a corresponding time for the discharge of the capacitors that corresponds to
airbag system after being careful when measuring its resistance and not making a mistake by measuring directly for
prevent it from being activated.

Measurement: The sensor measurement showed 18.32Ω.

➢ 5.6 Connectors of the Sensors and Their Color:

▪ Steering wheel angle sensor spiral is fixed to the steering wheel.
▪ Occupancy detection sensor located in the part of the seat just where

▪ The accident sensor is usually located beneath the steering column.

Conclusion

In this research, we highlighted that the SRS system is essential for a journey.
allowing us that in case of an impact it has devices that allow us to reduce the
impact of a collision through the Airbag. Allowing each user inside the vehicle to
find safety and thus avoid possible death or injuries.

What necessarily allows us to avoid hitting ourselves against the structures of

vehicle, like against the door, the steering wheel and the seat allowing us to save lives.

That is why it is important that the SRS system is in condition to be activated.

We finally concluded that the passive safety system (SRS system) is essential.
at the moment of having an accident as it allows us to cushion the blow and thus the user's body
it can avoid being ejected or hitting the vehicle structure and sustaining injuries.
