Characteristics of Ruta VIVA Construction

This document summarizes the characteristics and construction process of the VIVA Route in Ecuador. The VIVA Route will connect the valleys of Tumbaco and Cumbayá and will have a length of 12.9 km. The construction is carried out in two phases, with Phase I between Auquitas and Intervalles and Phase II between Intervalles and Puembo. The route includes interchanges, steps, and two bridges over the San Pedro and Chiche rivers. The construction process involves earthworks, drainage.

The typical cross-section of the live route is 3.65 m for 3 bidirectional lanes.

The project is located in the canton of Quito, within the jurisdiction of the parishes of
Cumbayá, Tumbaco, Puembo, Tababela, and Pifo, belonging to the DMQ.

With the VIVA Route, vehicular traffic on Interoceánica Avenue will be reduced by 50%
approximately, reaching 22,300 vehicles per day. The length of the road will be
12.9 km, between Av. Simón Bolívar and the parish of Puembo, mentioned above.

Pedestrian Crossings

In total, there are around 11 overpasses in Ruta Viva, meaning vehicular overpasses.
(Suitable for all light or heavy vehicles), 5 pedestrian crossings to serve each of the
communities that were cut off due to the construction of this road. It is also known that the
use of 6 lower steps, and the use of the exchangers that are around 5

We have the presence of two staircases that connect Ruta Viva with the
Interoceanic Avenue, which serves as a bypass or detour for traffic
towards connectivity points with the community.

obtain the humidity required by the designer, which will be 95% and which will be
controlled by Oversight for the proper deployment of asphalt sheet.

As an interesting fact, we can also obtain the use of the iron or also wrongly called
"Finisher" since it is responsible for finishing the lane in two sections for each lane and that
through sensors it ensures that the asphalt layer is placed at the same level as the
section completed earlier.

4. CONSTRUCTION PROCESS:
According to data from EPMOOP, the Auquitas interchange was developed in such a way that the most
The movement of the earth was primordial.

COLLECTORS: There are countless collectors, what is at the Lumbisi step, it was about
from a ravine where the filling processes were the primary part for the
development of this structure, so that the objective of linking the explained avenues is set
previously.

In Ruta Viva, 3 methods for slope stabilization have been developed.

Shotcrete: A pressure pump is used which fulfills the purpose of
projecting the concrete which has a low dosage and the aggregate is of
average granulometry since this facilitates its passage over the hoses to
to use.

Malla for torsion, strategic placement of anchors: A small one is placed.

1 inch separators made with local or construction material
surplus and is covered with 5 cm of concrete, guides are placed to facilitate the

previously measured rods, etc.

Ivy covering: It is nothing more than the covering of plant material.

which produce roots, and these in turn generate branches that penetrate
each time on the ground, resulting in the stability of the slope.

The main category and therefore the most expensive in the construction of Ruta Viva is the
earthmoving since in some places machinery was used
specialized for the issue of cuts and fills with the same material.
The pavement structure used on Ruta Viva is:

0.12 m

0.20 m

BASE = 0.20 m
Note: The asphalt layer is placed in such a way that first 7.5 cm is laid as the first layer.
Next, a binder is poured and the second layer is placed, which will be 4.5 cm, completing the
of the 12 cm planned by the designer.

Similarly, in phases 1 and 2, a number of collectors are managed, designed

so that a separate sewage system can be used, meaning it separates water
sewage rainwater. However, for this, the construction of a
wastewater treatment plant to serve the communities with the same
benefited by this work.

Meanwhile, the collectors operate in a combined manner, as it only anticipates the

construction of this treatment plant. Therefore, there are blockages of ducts that
they only guide the wastewater to the respective inspection wells and the same ones
They discharge in ravines authorized by the responsible environmental entity.

5. STRUCTURES AND BRIDGES:

Along the course of the track, there are different types of structures needed.
for its proper functioning, the structures that will be built are the corresponding ones
to the large illuminated bridges over the Chiche and San Pedro rivers, and the upper steps 13 and
14, part of the Puembo interchange.

The road project crosses the San Pedro and Chiche rivers, where the base design has opted for the
construction of bridges in successive cantilevers.

The project crosses a densely populated area, which is why it generates

interruptions on some cross streets that exist in the area. To provide continuity to

like: upper steps and lower steps.

Constructive Methodology For Base Design (Bridges In Successive Cantilevers)

The bridge deck is designed with symmetrical successive overhangs in the basic design.
with self-supporting formwork. This type of construction involves executing the board of the
bridge without traditional formwork or shoring supported on the ground, in successive sections
called voussoirs.

Each of these elements is built in cantilevers with respect to those that precede it,
after the casting of a segment, the post-tensioning cables that end in this segment,
they are stressed, becoming part of a self-supporting cantilever beam, which
They will subsequently serve as support for the construction of the other voussoirs. The construction
the beam is carried out symmetrically on both sides of the pile, in such a way that it
they can minimize the unbalancing moments transmitted to the pile during the
construction of the board.

One of the bridges is the continuous portal type, built by advancing in successive cantilevers in
prestressed concrete, with inclined piers in the shape of a "V".

In each stack, there are two pendular supports, which provides a system of
seismic isolation. The sliding pendulum bearing devices consist of a base
concave, by using the pendulous supports it is possible to flex the structure,
as well as increasing damping through energy dissipation. All of this
greatly favors the global behavior of the structure against the seismic hypothesis.
