INVERTED CONDITIONAL (VERY FORMAL)

1st conditional = we have 1 option:

If you need an umbrella, I’ll give you one

1) SHOULD instead of IF

—> Should you need an umbrella, I’ll give you one

2nd conditional = we have 3 options

1) with the verb TO BE (was - were) —> invert was - were and the subject + don’t use
if

If I were in your position, I’d quit my job


If I were rich, I’d buy a Ferrari

—> Were I in your position, …

2) with other verbs —> was - were + Vinfinitive (with “to”) + don’t use if

If we went there, we’d get lost

—> Were we to go there, …

3) SHOULD instead of IF (+ infinitive without “to”)

If we went there, we’d get lost

—> Should we go there, …

3rd conditional = we have 2 options

If I had seen you, I would have said hello

1) invert HAD / subject (take “if” off)

—> Had I seen you, I…

2) SHOULD instead of IF —> change “had” with “have”

—> Should I have seen you, I..
