Spreadsheet software is a combination of rows and columns where data can be
arranged in an order. It provides formulas and functions to generate results
and report in printable format. It converts data in charts to compare and
analyze complex data. It helps to export and import data from other files. This
software is flexible to work with tables.

softwares.
Spreadsheets are used for a variety of tasks, such as
• Maintaining records
• Analyzing data
• Creating MIS (Management Information System) reports
• Generating graphs (for pictorial representation of data)
• Doing financial calculations
• Managing inventory
• Budgeting etc.
Some of the most popular spreadsheet software are:
• MS-Excel
• Open Office – Calc

Worksheet: This is a grid of horizontal rows and vertical columns.
Workbook: A workbook contains one or more worksheets.
Cell: A cell is the fundamental element of a worksheet where the rows and
columns intersect. A cell on which the cursor is currently placed is called as an
active cell.
Formula Bar: This is located below the Ribbon. It displays the contents of the
activecell. It can also be used to enter and edit data.

1) Workbook: A workbook is a collection of worksheets. By default MS Excel
has three worksheets in a workbook. We can insert new worksheets and can
rename them.
2) Worksheet: A worksheet is a combination of rows and columns. Each
column is addressed with alphabets A, B, C and each row is addressed with
numbers 1, 2, 3. The intersection of rows and columns is called a cell and each
cell has a unique address like A1.

A formula is a mathematical expression using a cell or range of cells and gives
a result. Three elements are used in a formula.
1) Reference: Cell or range of cells is used in a formula. For example: A1, B1:B8
2) Operator: (+, -, *, /, %, ^) Arithmetic Operators are used in mathematical
expression.
3) Constants: Value that doesn’t change.

By default Text is aligned at left and number at right. In spreadsheet data can
be aligned in six different ways. To use alignment, select the cell and select
alignment option.
1) Left Align: Data align at left side of the cell.
2) Right Align: Data align at right side of the cell.
3) Center Align: Data align at center side of the cell.
4) Top Align: Data align at top side of the cell.
5) Middle Align: Data align at middle side of the cell.
6) Bottom Align: Data align at bottom side of the cell.
