Answer Key – Practice Examination

Paper
Class: 8 Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Exponents, Squares & Cubes

------------------------------------------------------------

Section A – Multiple Choice Questions (1 mark each)

1. (2³)² = 2^(3×2) = 2⁶ ⇒ (b)

2. 169 = 13², 225 = 15² ⇒ Both (a) & (b) ⇒ (c)

3. √81 = 9 ⇒ (a)

4. 64 = 4³ ⇒ (a)

Section B – Short Answer (2 marks each)

5. (3⁵ × 3²) ÷ 3⁴ = 3^(5+2−4) = 3³ = 27

6. 720 = 2⁴ × 3² × 5 × 2 (extra factors remain) ⇒ Not a perfect square

7. 180 = 2² × 3² × 5. For perfect cube, need one more 2 and one more 5 ⇒ Multiply by 10

8. 2⁻³ + 5⁰ = 1/8 + 1 = 9/8

Section C – Medium (3 marks each)

9. √7396 = 86 (by long division method)

10. √(25/36) = 5/6

11. 13824 = 2⁶ × 3⁴ ⇒ Cube root = 24

12. 8^(2/3) × 27^(1/3) = ( (2³)^(2/3) ) × ( (3³)^(1/3) ) = 2² × 3 = 12

Section D – Long Answer (4 marks each)

13. (5⁷ × 5⁻³) ÷ 5² = 5^(7−3−2) = 5²

14. 392 = 2³ × 7². For perfect square, need one more 2 ⇒ Least number to divide = 2

15. Area = 7744 ⇒ side = √7744 = 88 cm ⇒ Perimeter = 4 × 88 = 352 cm

16. ∛12.167 ≈ 2.30 (to two decimal places)

Section E – Higher Order Thinking Skills (5 marks each)
17. Proof: Assume √2 = p/q in lowest form. ⇒ 2q² = p² ⇒ p² is even ⇒ p is even ⇒ q also
even. Contradiction. Hence √2 is irrational.

18. 110592 = n³ ⇒ n = ∛110592 = 48 ⇒ 48 cubes along one edge
