Recycling Soap: A Science Project Guide

The document presents a science fair project on the making of homemade soap. The objectives are to develop learning about school sciences, support recycling to care for the environment, and show that one can help the environment from home through soap recycling. The project includes activities such as research, formulation of the recipe, soap making, and conclusions that making soap benefits the economy and the environment by recycling products.

OBJECTIVES
Contribute to the development of learning that enables acquisition
of values, principles, and methodologies specific to the sciences
schoolchildren.
Support and emphasize the need to take action to recycle
that which is no longer used, thus contributing to the care of
environment
Exemplify through the recycling of soap, that from home one
can help the ongoing efforts carried out by various
environmental groups to protect the planet.
FOUNDATION
In the past, soap making was done at home, but today it is a
a tradition that is being lost and yet it is a simple activity and
very gratifying, in addition to being a useful way to recycle oils from
fried foods produced at home and not contaminating the environment using
products that do not contain undesirable chemicals.
This experience was presented to the students as a research project.
from two central aspects: recycling and hygiene, investigating the
history of soap, importance of environmental care, recycling,
hygiene and formula for preparing soap at school first and then taking it
the recipe to the house.

Recycling is a simple gesture that involves returning to the productive cycle.

the waste that can be reused as raw material. If
we adopt this healthy idea as a daily habit, we contribute to saving
energy and to respect the natural resources of the planet.
The importance of personal hygiene, clothing, food,
utensils and the family and school environment is an essential necessity
for life as its absence causes diseases.
PROBLEMS
Non-biodegradable cleaning products pollute the environment
Set oils, fats, and leftover soaps polluting the environment and
discarding an element that can benefit the household economy.

HYPOTHESIS:
Non-biodegradable cleaning products are not natural.
People do not know that it is possible to make soaps from oils and fats.
natural.
The soaps that are obtained must be greasy due to the content of
oils and fats.
The soaps that are obtained must be used with gloves because of the lye.
Caustic will hurt the hands.
The combination of the two components nullifies the harshness of one and the
corrosive power of the other.
The obtained product will have an unpleasant smell.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

HOW TO MAKE HANDMADE SOAPS

HISTORY
The origins of personal hygiene date back to prehistory. Like the
water was the element that was always present, at least they removed the mud and
dust with her.
In ancient Babylon, 2800 B.C., some inscriptions were found that
they said they boiled ashes with fats, which was considered a method
to make soap.
The Egyptians bathed regularly using a similar process,
to treat skin diseases, as well as for personal hygiene.
Around that same time, Moses was giving the Israelites laws that governed the
personal hygiene, both for health and for religious purification.
The Greeks, although they did not use soap as we know it.
Today, they were cleaning themselves with clay, ashes, and pumice stone. They smeared their bodies.
with oils, and they washed their clothes with water in the streams.

The soap got its name, according to an ancient Roman legend, from the
Monte Sapo, (saponification, soap), where they sacrificed their animals. The
rain washed a mixture of melted grease and wood ashes onto the ground
clayey of the Tiber River, where women found that this mixture
made his washing much easier.
The Germans and Gauls also claim to have discovered soap.
The Romans, as an advanced civilization, took long baths, very
popular and luxurious.
A Greek physician, Galen, in the second century of our Christian era,
it recommended its use for medicinal and cleaning purposes.
In the Middle Ages, this procedure declined, and the great
plagues.
The procedure for making soap was kept secret in the
monasteries since the 7th century, and gradually it was used both for the
shaving, to make shampoo and wash clothes.
Italy, Spain, and France were the first centers of mass production.
of soap, in the 12th century, but the taxes were very high, which
Few people used them.
Many chemists developed various techniques to make soap, in
industrial form, and in the American colonies, animal fat was used and
ash, to make a low-quality homemade soap, but it was useful for the
purposes of personal cleaning and clothing care.
The First World War, when fat was scarce, led chemists
to use synthetic substances, what we currently know as
detergents, which combine with mineral salts and produce substances
undesirables that pollute our environment.

used.
Do you have sensitive skin or would you like to have a cosmetic soap with
multitude of beneficial properties for your skin the following recipes give you
they will surely enchant:

Olive oil and coconut soap. It is very moisturizing and ideal for preventing the
appearance of skin spots
Lavender soap. I love this recipe for its multitude of properties.
provides spectacular hydration, reduces wrinkles of
expression, brings a natural glow, revitalizes the skin, good for
treatment for acne, psoriasis, etc.
Coffee and milk soap. It contains a multitude of properties among others: it is
moisturizing, detoxifying, helps to eliminate cellulite, combats bags
and dark circles, etc.

First Liquid Soap Recipe:

Ingredients:
Dispensing container
Bar soap.
Distilled water (three cups for each one of grated soap)
A couple of teaspoons of liquid glycerin or olive oil
Steps to make liquid soap:
1. We grated the soap bar (with a cheese grater for
for example), if there is no grater you can cut the dough into pieces
small and fine.
We heat the water in a pot (3 times the weight of the pill)

We introduce the grated soap into the water.

4. We heat everything over low heat.

We stir the mixture with a spoon until the soap has

totally dissolved.

6. Afterwards, we put out the fire; here you can add a couple of
teaspoonfuls of vegetable glycerin so that the soap mixture is
more moisturizing or if you don't have it you can use the same one instead
amount of olive oil. Everything is mixed well.

7. If you want to add aroma, you can incorporate a few drops of

essential oil, This will add the properties of to the liquid soap
these oils. Make sure that the chosen scent is complementary to the
soap or use a unscented soap.

8. We let the mixture cool until it has the consistency of gel (if you see
that has become too thick can be solved by heating it up
new and adding a little bit of water).
A solution is incorporated into an appropriate container for liquid soaps.

We have it ready to use.

Second recipe for Liquid Soap:

Another way to make liquid soap without having to heat the mixture is the
which I show you next.

Ingredients:

65 grams of natural soap (that we will grate)

330 ml of distilled water
30 ml of almond oil (to provide an extra boost of hydration if
do you have dry skin?
20 drops of essential oil (to choose from, in my case, I used lavender).
Everything is put into the blender and ready to use.

CONCLUSIONS
We came to the conclusion that:
Making homemade soaps is a practice that benefits the economy of the
home.
It is a simple, entertaining activity.
The resulting soaps are of good quality and can be used for both
to wash clothes and utensils for body hygiene.
They do not pollute the environment.

It is made with recycled waste products.

Colorants or fragrances can be added to improve its aroma.
In our research, we have to keep conducting experiments to
improve the hardness of the soap and perfect it with the incorporation of
fine oils and infusions of specific herbs for making soaps with
moisturizing and nourishing properties.
It is proposed to hold explanatory and demonstrative talks for the mothers of
the students to teach them how to make soap.
