The service keys

The keys used in this vehicle with an immobilizer system are
identical to the usual ones, except for the fact that they incorporate into their handle a
transponder type emitter chip. This component consists of three parts:
power circuit, memory that contains a specific and unique code, and
the emitter circuit.

The transponder is not powered.

operation is generated induced by a
variable magnetic field. The field
magnetic is created by the action of a
sine wave voltage current flowing

current is sent by the unit of

Under power supply tension, the transponder's emitter emits a train of

by the reading unit, which at that moment acts as an antenna. Each key

A common cause of failure is the loss of the chip due to the

accidental opening of the key handle. It also often happens that in a
fall or blow of the key, the chip moves in its housing and as it moves away from
the influence of the magnetic field does not have power supply voltage. This
it also happens if the chip is not mounted in the correct position. For these reasons
it is advisable, in case of breakdown, to check the mentioned aspects and beforehand

The reading unit / antenna

The reading unit or antenna gets its name from the function it performs.
Its appearance is that of a plastic ring located at the top end of the
ignition switch. Inserted in that plastic is a coil and a
electrically associated capacitor.

When the ignition key is turned on,

the control unit of the immobilizer
generates an alternating current that flows
through the coil producing a field
electromagnetic, which as it has
explained before, will provoke the
power supply for the switch.
It has also been indicated that the
the key transponder emits in these
circumstances one signal for
radio frequency, signal that is captured by
the coil that together with the capacitor now acts as an antenna. The signal

One of the reasons for being out of service is that the ring does not

As mentioned, the function of this unit is to authorize the

The immobilizer unit can store the code for up to a maximum

vehicles with conventional diesel injection while the one on the right corresponds to

FUNCTIONS OF THE ELECTRONIC UNIT OF THE IMMOBILIZER

The functions of the Fiat CODE central unit are:

1- Recognize that a key has been placed and turned in the switch of
start.

2- Emit an electromagnetic field to provide power and activate the

TRANSPONDER (code emitter) of the key.

5- To direct a bi-directional serial communication with a single cable towards the

engine control unit or DDS.

6- Direct the ignition of a specific witness, Recognize the connection with the

The Fiat CODE system allows the operation of the control unit of the
motor through a code exchange.

When the key is in the RUN position (+15 = Contact) the control unit
engine control requests the code from the FIAT CODE control unit, this latter
respond and send a secret code only after having recognized
through the antenna the electronic key that has been introduced into the switch
to start.

Once the code is recognized, the engine control unit allows for

The engine control unit, as has already been seen, can memorize the
secret code only through a specific procedure.

When turning the key to the START position (+15), the engine control unit
request the code from the Fiat CODE switchboard and, once it has been received, it
compares with the stored master code. If the comparison
of the code is positive, the engine control unit allows the activation of
gear and the normal operation of the engine.
In case of a breakdown of the Fiat CODE control unit, the engine control unit
activate the emergency start-up procedure with the Scanner or
good (in gasoline versions with injection/ignition control unit
integrated and in the Diesel versions with electronic injection control
through the accelerator pedal.

Code control is a standard procedure that is repeated every time

the User inserts the electronic key into the ignition switch and turns it to the
position ON ( +15), the control procedure continues when it is turned
the key to the START position (+ 50).
With the key in the ON position (+15), the Fiat CODE control unit must
recognize the electronic key with its corresponding code; there are two
possibilities:

a) If the Fiat CODE control unit recognizes the code, the control unit of
engine allows the engine to operate (the CODE light goes off),
b) If the Fiat CODE control unit does not recognize the code, it will send a code to the
engine control unit, which will not allow the engine to operate.
