What is a Single Subject
Credential?
The Single Subject Teaching Credential issued by
the California Commission on Teacher
Credentialing (CTC) authorizes the holder to teach
the specific subject(s) named on the credential in
departmentalized classes, such as those in most
middle schools and high schools, in grades K-12, or
in classes organized primarily for adults.

Single Subject Credential Program.
If required, official transcripts must be sent to the Office of
Admissions to see if you meet University requirements for admissions.
Documents uploaded to the CalStateApply application will determine
if you meet program requirements for admissions.

Applying to csuf the university
You must complete an application to CSU Fullerton via CalState Apply:
Apply as a credential student and submit evidence/documents to
Quadrant 4
Review the application prior to submitting, then pay the $70 processing fee
Once application is submitted, send official transcripts from where you
obtained your Bachelor’s degree and all other colleges and universities
attended to the CSUF Office of Admissions
Current CSUF students or alumni do not have to send transcripts to the
Office of Admissions, but they still must upload transcripts into Q4.
Students with an international transcript must submit a comprehensive
international evaluation by a CTC approved agency. The CTC has a list of
approved agencies available.

Prerequisite Coursework
If you are a non-CSUF student, you can enroll in credential program prerequisite courses through Extended
Education or Open University:
1) Extensions Professional Development : offered online for 8 weeks every fall and spring semester
2) Open University : sections offered in person and online during spring/fall (15 weeks), winter intercession, and
summer sessions
*Starting in Spring 2026, applicants who would like to complete all four prerequisite courses at CSUF in one semester
are able to apply to the university. This requires careful planning, so make an appointment with an advisor for more
information.
Complete the course equivalency petition for any courses taken outside of CSUF that you believe match
the prerequisite course description.
There are also equivalent courses for a few of these prerequisites offered at local community colleges.
All EDSC prerequisite courses must be taken within 7 years prior to admittance to the program.
Ethnic Studies requirement
You must complete an Ethnic Studies course prior to beginning
the program.
Completion of an Ethnic Studies major or minor from CSUF or an accredited
institution satisfies the requirement
Course must be completed with a grade of C- or higher
Course must have been taken no later than 10 years prior to entering the
credential program

You can also complete a course from the list of approved equivalent
courses at other community colleges.
If you have already taken a class from an Ethnic Studies department
outside of CSUF, you can submit a petition for equivalency.

There are two prompts, pick one and

Recommendations
Two current recommendations required, but three are highly
recommended. Submit recommenders names and contact
information on the Cal State Apply application for a
recommendation evaluation request.
At least one recommendation must come university faculty in
your subject matter (preferred), pre-req faculty, or any other
university faculty you have taken a course from.
The second recommender can be a professional reference or
another faculty member.
Math applicants must have three recommendations.
Make sure to give your recommenders a heads up that a link will
be emailed to them to access the recommendation request.
Send your requests EARLY! Do not wait until the day you
submit the application.
Interview
An in-person or virtual interview will be scheduled by the
Subject Area Coordinator after your admission file is
reviewed.
You will be assessed on the following:
Communication skills
Content knowledge
Dispositions toward teaching
Commitment to our JEIE principles.
The SAC will contact you directly to schedule the meeting and
tell you how to prepare. Make sure you dress professionally.

NOTE: A passing interview score is required for teacher candidate
admissions, so make sure to come fully prepared. dispositions
U.S. Constitution Course
You must complete a course or pass an
exam in the provisions and principles of
the U.S. Constitution.
Most CSU graduates will have fulfilled
this as undergrad coursework.
Certain political science or early
American history courses can qualify

Any undergraduate degree from a regionally
accredited institution is required.
Exception: Per the CTC, if you have a Bachelor’s in
Professional Education, you are not eligible a
Single Subject Credential.

Evidence of Subject Matter
Competency
In order to receive a teaching credential, you must prove you are
knowledgeable in the subject you wish to teach. There are 5 ways to
meet the subject matter requirement:
1) Earn a degree in the subject you plan to teach.
Not applicable for those who want to teach Social Sciences/History or
Physical Education

2) Completion of coursework that address each domain of the
subject matter.

3) Pass the state-approved subject matter CSET exam
There are multiple subtests for each CSET depending on the subject
At the time of application, ¾ of the CSET subtests must be passed and the applicant must be
registered for the remaining subtests and proof of registration is required. The final subtest
MUST BE PASSED within 6 weeks of the prioirty application deadline. Upload evidence of
exam score report, do not have scores sent to CSUF.
4) Combination of coursework and CSET
You can combine options 2 and 3. For example, you may complete coursework to satisfy the
domains measured in CSET subtests 1 and 3 and obtain a passing score on CSET subtest 2.
5) Complete the state-approved Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP)
Note: This is an undergraduate plan that requires careful planning early on. Contact the
Subject Area Coordinator for more information.
Evidence of Basic Skills
Requirement
Teacher candidates must demonstrate the ability to understand
basic reading, writing, and math. A bachelor’s degree from a
regionally accredited institution of higher education will satisfy
this requirement.
For those in-progress with bachelor’s degrees: submit a copy of
official transcripts to demonstrate that you are on-track to fulfill
the basic skills requirement.
For those with completed bachelor’s degrees: submit a copy of
official transcripts that shows degree conferral demonstrating
fulfillment of the basic skills requirement.

can be used for both semesters of the credential program
