Class IX Mathematics – Chapter 1: Number Systems

Moderate■Difficulty Practice Test (CBSE)

Time Allowed: 90 minutes Maximum Marks: 40

Section A – Very■Short Answer (1 mark each)

1. Simplify: (√5 − √2)².
2. Write one rational number between −7/5 and −6/5.
3. Is 0.35■ rational or irrational? Give reason.
4. Write the decimal expansion of 3/16.
5. State whether √49.0 is irrational.
6. If x = √2 + √3, find the conjugate of x.

Section B – Short Answer I (2 marks each)

7. Prove that the product of two non■zero rational numbers is always rational.
8. Without actual division, classify each as terminating or recurring:
a) 14/250 b) 21/(2■·3²)
9. Express √12 + √75 in the form a√b (b square■free).
10. Locate √6 on a number line (brief steps with sketch).
11. Rationalise the denominator: 5/(√7 − √5).

Section C – Short Answer II (3 marks each)

12. Show that the decimal representation of 7/90 terminates after two places.
13. Arrange in ascending order without calculator: √18, 4.2, √20.
14. If x = 2 + √3, evaluate 1/x + 1/(x − 2).
15. Prove by contradiction that √15 is irrational.

Section D – Long Answer (4 marks each)

16. A square field has area 2000 m². A path 1■m wide is laid all around inside.
a) Express the sides in surd form.
b) Find exact area of the path.

17. Let a = √5 − √2 and b = √5 + √2.

a) Show that ab is an integer.
b) Prove a³ + b³ is rational but not integer.

18. x = 2/(3 − √5).

a) Rationalise denominator and simplify.
b) Does decimal expansion of x terminate or recur?
c) Write x correct to three decimal places.

Instructions:
* Attempt all questions.
* For Q16–18, internal choice may be given; attempt any one option each.
* Keep answers in surd or fractional form unless specified.
* Show all steps; reasoning carries marks.

Best of luck!
