Teaching Unit SMART & FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS

The aim on the course is focused on the properties of materials used in
modern technology, such as the smart and functional materials. These
latter materials have one or more properties that can be significantly
changed/tuned in a controlled fashion by external stimuli (temperature,
electric/magnetic field, etc.). Thanks to these features they are
increasingly applied in a broad range of technological devices in modern
technologies. On the other hand, standard design methods and testing
procedures cannot be directly applied to such materials due to their
unique mechanical and functional response. Within this context, the main
properties of the selected functional materials of engineering interest are
firstly analyzed, with a focus on active/smart materials for sensing and
actuation. In particular, the properties of piezoelectric and
Contents magnetostrictive materials, shape memory polymers and shape memory
alloys are studied. The topics treated include crystal structures, bonding,
and physical properties of materials. Focus is given to the relationship
between properties and crystal structure, with the aim of defining
synthesis and processing conditions to obtain optimal functional
response. Subsequently, a deep analysis on commercial shape memory
alloys (SMAs) systems is made, such as binary and ternary Ni-Ti based
alloys. The role of thermo-mechanical processes, the so-called training, on
shape memory and pseudoelastic response of SMAs is analyzed, with the
aim of maximizing their performance. Special design methods, based on
mixed knowledge- and method-based approaches are analyzed, to deal
with the complex thermo-mechanical response and with the large
number of engineering parameters of SMAs.

Delivery Mode C
Lectures and exercises are performed either in a traditional way, the
board, or with the aid of a computer. Students are also encouraged to
study scientific papers on a specific topic. Furthermore, case studies will
be analyzed to better understand the relations between microstructure
and macroscopic response. These activities will be summarized in a
Teaching Methods
technical report. If, for health security reasons, the teaching should be
delivered remotely, the Microsoft Teams platform will be used on which
the teaching material is loaded, carrying out the lessons in mixed mode
between synchronous and asynchronous, considering also any moments

in presence.
Methods for learning assesment The learning assessment method consists
of an oral exam, on the topic of the course, and a discussion/presentation
of a workgroup activity carried out during the course. The learning
assessment test will be carried out with the aim of analyzing the
knowledge and understanding levels of all the topics of the class as well as
the student’s ability to apply theoretical methods and analysis tools to
practical engineering applications. This will be also carried out by team
group activities and technical reports. If, for health security reasons,
teaching should be delivered remotely, both the written and oral tests will
be carried out in a similar way. In details, for tests execution reference
will be made to the operational indications defined by the relative
University Guidelines, using platforms such as Microsoft Teams or
Methods and Criteria for
similar but keeping unchanged the tests organization. At the end of the

written test, the paper will be sent digitally to the committee chair. The
same occurs during the oral exam with reference to any written form.
Criteria for learning assesment The learning level is assessed by the
following criteria: degree of knowledge and ability to apply theories and
methods; degree of competence of analysis methods; independence level
in choosing the most appropriate engineering solutions of a specific
problem; ability to think critically and to synthesize information; clarity,
effectiveness and completeness of the presentation; methodological rigor
and calculation correctness; ability to rapidly and correctly understand
the answers. Criteria to measure the learning methods and final score
The final score is the results of both technical report on work group
activities and oral examination, but not the mathematical average value.

Lectures:
Lectures will be supported by lecture notes (ppt presentations) that summarize the
contents of each lessons. Lecture notes are intended to be just a learning guideline and
topics should be deepened by studying proper sections of the textbooks.

Practices:
Theories and methods treated in the lectures will be analyzed by simple case studies,
that is by simple designs including smart materials and systems. This would include the
use of both analytical and numerical methods.
Teaching methods

Homework:
Students will be encouraged to select, read and deeply analyze the contents of
technical/scientific papers on topics related to Smart and Functional materials and
structures as well as on their current and future applications. These activities will be
summarized in technical reports.

Laboratory:
Students will be possibly involved in laboratory activities that will be organized either as
ad-hoc course projects or by the participation in running R&D active projects on smart
materials. These activities will be organized following current security regulations, that
is by scheduling laboratory tasks by groups of 3-4 students.
