Quarter 2 – Module 6b (Week 4):
CIRCLES
Self-Learning Module
Introduction of the Lesson
According to [Link] “the study of circle goes back beyond the
recorded history. The invention of the wheel is a fundamental discovery of properties of a
circle. The Greeks considered the Egyptians as the inventors of geometry.” This module
discusses on Circles. We will be studying about the different terms such as chords, arcs, central
angles, inscribed angles, tangent and secant lines and segments that are related to circles.
Different Theorems related to circles are discussed too. Hope you will enjoy learning about
circles. If you meet some difficulties, please do not hesitate to go back, and read again.
You are expected to learn
This module is created for you to:
1. Prove theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed angles
2. Illustrate tangents and secants of circles
3. Prove theorems on secants and tangents of circles

Solutions
1
1. 𝑎0 = (1160 )
2
= 580
2. Since, 𝑥 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 0 intercepts the same arc. So, 𝑥 0 = 𝑦 0 = 720
3. Opposite angles of an inscribed quadrilateral are supplementary,
𝑐 0 = 1800 − 1000 = 800
𝑏 0 = 1800 − 960 = 840 .
Intercepted arc of 1000 is 990 + 𝑎0
2 ∙ 1000 = 990 + 𝑎0 .
𝑎0 = 1010 .
Intercepted arc of 𝑏 𝑖𝑠 𝑎0 + 𝑑0
0
2 ∙ 840 = 1010 + 𝑑0
𝑑0 = 670
Therefore, 𝑎 = 101 , 𝑏 = 840 , 𝑐 0 = 800 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑0 = 670

Solutions:
1. The angle formed by radius and a tangent line is a right angle.
Sum of the angles of a triangle is 𝑥 0 + 900 + 430 = 1800
𝑥 0 = 1800 − 1330
𝑥 0 = 470
2.
𝐴𝐷 = 𝐴𝐹 = 10 𝑐𝑚 The two-segment tangent to a circle
𝐵𝐷 = 𝐵𝐸 = 15 𝑐𝑚 from a point outside the circle are
CF= 𝐶𝐸 = 8 𝑐𝑚 congruent.
𝑃 = 𝐴𝐵 + 𝐵𝐶 + 𝐶𝐴 Definition of perimeter 𝑷
= 𝐴𝐷 + 𝐷𝐵 + 𝐵𝐸 + 𝐸𝐶 + 𝐶𝐹 + 𝐹𝐴 Segment Addition Postulate
= 10 + 15 + 15 + 8 + 8 + 10 Substitute.
= 66
The perimeter is 66 cm.
3. Use Pythagorean Theorem.
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
𝑐 2 = 62 + 82
𝑐 2 = 100
𝑐 = 10
SECANT LINE IN A CIRCLE
A secant is a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points. A secant contains a
chord of a circle.
CLASSIFICATION OF ANGLES WITH CIRCLES
There are three cases to consider, according to the placement of the vertex of the
angles.

Summary
1. An inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex lies on a circle and whose sides are chords
of the circle.
2. Inscribed Angle Theorem The measure of an angle inscribed in a circle is equal to one-
half the meaure of the intercepted arc.
3. THEOREMS ON INSCRIBED ANGLES
1. Any angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle.
2. Every two angles inscribed in the same arc are congruent.
3. The opposite angles of a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle are supplementary.
4. A tangent to a circle is a line coplanar with the circle and intersects it in one and only one
point. The point of intersection of the line and the circle is called the point of tangency.
5. THEOREMS ON TANGENT LINES
1. If a line is tangent to a circle, then the line is perpendicular to the radius drawn to the
point of tangency.
2. If a line in the plane of a circle is perpendicular to a radius at its endpoint on the circle,
then the line is tangent to the circle.
3. The two segments tangent to a circle from a point outside the circle are congruent.
6. A secant is a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points. A secant contains a chord
of a circle.
7. Theorems on Angles Formed by Tangents and Secants
1. If a secant and a tangent intersect at the point of tangency, then the measure of each
angle formed is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.
2. If two secants intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the angle
formed is one-half the absolute value of the difference of the measures of the
intercepted arcs.
3. If a secant and a tangent intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the
angle formed is one-half the absolute value of the difference of the measures of the
intercepted arcs.
4. If two tangents intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the angle
formed is one-half the positive difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.
5. If two secants intersect in the interior of a circle, then the measure of an angle formed
is one-half the sum of the measures of the arcs intercepted by the angle and its vertical
angle.
