Tutorial 3
1. A die is rolled until a 6 is obtained.
(a) What is the probability that at most 6 rolls are required?
(b) How many rolls are required so that the probability of getting 6 is at least 1/2?
2. In a game of chance involving 10 cards each labeled 1-10 placed face-down, a player choose
a card and wins an amount equal to the value on the card. If the game organizers wanted
to turn in a profit from this game, what should be the price of admission they must charge
for playing the game?
3. A spinner disc of unit radius with 16 equally spaced landing zone is randomly coloured
Red, Green, Yellow and Blue equally. In the game, a player spins and if the pointer lands
on a green zone, the winning amount is Rs 100. If it lands on Red, the player loses Rs 50.
For Yellow and Blue, there are no loss or winnings. If the price of admission is Rs 10 per
spin, can a player expect to make a profit from this? What would be the profit/loss?
4. In an experiment of rolling two fair dice, let X be the difference between the face value of
dice. Determine the probability distribution of X. Calculate also its variance and standard
deviation.
5. Three cards are labeled 1, 2, 3 and kept face-down. Two cards are drawn at random without
replacement and let X be random variable whose value is the label on first card and Y be
random variable whose value is the label on second card. Calculate Cov(X, Y ).
