CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research methodology which includes the research design
of the study, methods used, research setting, population and data analysis.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will use a quantitative descriptive survey approach as part of a
descriptive research. This design's objective is to outline, evaluate, and examine the part
of midwives play in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in low-income areas. Since the
purpose of this study is to collect data on the roles, practices, and challenges facing by
midwives and other health care professionals in promoting exclusive breastfeeding, the
descriptive design is suitable. The researchers can use this method to measure responses,
compile information such as level of acceptance and positive and negative effects and
identify the challenges about midwives engagement in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
RESEARCH SETTING
This study was conducted at the City College of Naga in City of Naga. Specifically,
the researchers conducted the survey questionnaire in Barangay Catanusan, Minalabac
Camarines Sur.
METHODS AND PROCEDURE
The survey method employed in this study was used to determine the roles of
midwives in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Barangay Catanusan, Minalabac,
Camarines Sur. The researchers used survey questionnaire form from the Conceptual
Framework. The instrument was a four-part questionnaire. The first part was referred to the
respondents of the study. The second part of the questionnaire was the current practices
and challenges faced by mothers in breastfeeding. The researchers asked permission to the
breastfeeding mothers in Catanusan Minalabac to answer the questionnaire to determine
the practices and challenges the mothers faced everyday to breastfeed a child. The third
part of the questionnaire was the benefits of practicing exclusive breastfeeding, and lastly,
the fourth part of the questionnaire was the roles of midwives in promoting exclusive
breastfeeding in low-income communities.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The respondents of this study focused on Barangay Catanusan Minalabac,
Camarines Sur. Thus, there are total of one hundred (100) respondents in this study, fifty
from the breastfeeding mothers, and fifty from the midwives. Using Slovin’ Formula on
computing the sample size of respondents of this study with 95% confidence level at 5%
margin error, the recommended sample size is ninety five (95) respondents. In order to
determine the samples for this study, the researchers asked permission to the breastfeeding
mothers and midwives inclusive only in Barangay Catanusan, Minalabac, Camarines Sur.

DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE
The data was treated and analyzed using the following:
1. Percentage and ranking technique was used to determine the demographic
profile of respondents in terms of gender, age, educational attainment
household income, and economic status.
2. Weighted mean was used to determine the breastfeeding practices and
challenges of mothers as well as the benefits of practicing exclusive
breastfeeding and the roles of midwives in promoting exclusive breastfeeding
in low-income communities in Barangay Catanusan, Minalabac, Camarines
Sur.
