The first artifact is an expository article which gives comprehensive and relevant information
on the writer’s experience while overcoming cancer. The writer maintained an informative tone
throughout the article which is proven by her usage of statistical data. In addition, she sustained a
solemn and emotional tone as she reflected on her journey. Evidence for these tones can be
identified in lines 10 to 14 of the article. The writer utilized standard English in the form of simple
vocabulary as well as a few jargon terms amongst the statistical data. With the effective usage of a
metaphor the writer compared cancer to a journey. This was an adequate comparison because just as a
journey cancer served as a linkage between two considerably different parts of the writer’s life.
The second piece under investigation is a descriptive poem entitled “I Fought Like A Girl”.
Throughout this free verse poem, the writer sustains an informal tone Additionally, she uses a

informal and hostile tone throughout the piece as he narrates the story of a gritty woman who has
breast cancer. The artist used a high level of American dialect as he sang mainly to get the attention
of the younger generation. Through the usage of profanity, the writer illustrates power and
control against the disease. In addition, the artist uses distasteful language to express his aversion
towards the disease.
