📦 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Packing of Wooden Boxes

1. Objective
Ensure safe, consistent, and export-compliant packing of products into wooden boxes so
goods arrive undamaged and all documentation is complete.

2. Scope
Applicable to all products requiring wooden box/crate packing for domestic and export
shipments.

3. Roles & Responsibilities


 Carpenter / Box Assembler → Builds and inspects wooden box.
 Packing Operator → Wraps product, places into box, installs cushioning.
 Rigger / Lifting Operator → Operates hoist/forklift for heavy items.
 QC Inspector → Performs final quality checks.
 Supervisor → Ensures compliance and approves release.

4. Materials & Tools Required


Materials:

 Wooden boxes
 Nails, screws, bolts, washers, metal angles
 LDPE liner sheets, cushioning (foam, thermocol, bubble wrap)
 VCI film/rust inhibitors, desiccants
 Strapping (steel/plastic) & seals, stretch/shrink wrap
 Labels, packing list

Tools/Equipment:

 Hammer, nail gun, drill, screwdriver


 Strapping machine, forklift/crane/hoist
 Measuring tools, weighing scale
 PPE: gloves, safety shoes, helmet
5. Step-by-Step Packing Procedure
Step 1 — Box Build & Inspection
Assemble box, check squareness, record ID.

Step 2 — Base Lining & Supports


Apply LDPE liner, fix foam/timber pads.

Step 3 — Product Prepping


Clean product, wrap in VCI/bubble, bag & label loose items.

Step 4 — Lifting & Insertion


Use hoist/forklift, place product carefully onto supports.

Step 5 — Anchoring/Fixing
Bolt/block product securely. Record torque if specified.

Step 6 — Blocking & Void Filling


Add braces, wedges, foam, desiccants. Shake test → no movement.

Step 7 — Top Liner & Protection


Apply top pads, fold & seal LDPE liner.

Step 8 — Lid Installation


Fix lid with nails/screws. Ensure pattern and flush fitting.

Step 9 — Strapping & Wrapping


Apply straps (2 × 2 minimum), use edge protectors. Wrap with stretch/shrink film.

Step 10 — Labelling & Documentation


Apply labels on at least 2 sides, attach packing list & certificates.

Step 11 — Final QC Inspection


QC checks dimensions, weight, fixings, strapping, labels. Sign release.

Step 12 — Palletization & Dispatch


Place on pallet, secure load, prepare shipping documents.

7. Safety Precautions
 Always wear PPE.
 Use lifting aids for heavy products.
 Handle power tools with care.
 Never overload beyond rated capacity.

8. Documentation & Export Compliance


 Maintain packing checklist, QC report, dispatch log.
 For export, wood is allowed.
