1. What is Deforestation
The reduction of forest cover is known as deforestation. This can ultimately result in the f
orest's structure and function being lost. To put it simply, deforestation is the removal of a for
est and its replacement with another region. This implies that there is a decrease in or maybe
a loss of forest area. Because other uses take precedence over it, a portion of the forest area th
at once supported a variety of forest ecosystems and plants loses its usefulness. One way to d
escribe deforestation is the conversion of a forest area into a non-forest one. This is a perman
ent alteration. The forest's primary purpose of protecting the environment and its ecosystem g
radually gives way to new uses as a result of demands from human populations. In most cases,
deforestation can occur when a forest is located in an area that is directly adjacent to various
human activities. For example, agricultural or plantation activities.
2. The Causes of Deforestation
There are many causes of deforestation, But the case that is often discussed is the defore
station of forests to be used as agricultural land, industrial land, or even new settlements. The
increasing human population on earth makes the interest in exploiting vacant land to be used
as a place to live increases dramatically. That's why, humans are competing to cut down trees
in the forest, So that new land or settlements can be built there. Reported from the website Wi
kipedia, Between 15-18 million hectares of forest, a land the size of Bangladesh, is destroyed
every year. An average of 2,400 trees are cut down every minute. They deforest everything as
if forests are not an important part of the earth. Some other causes that also often occur are mi
suse of government power, urbanization, and globalization.
3. Deforestation Effect
Deforestation has very serious impacts on biodiversity and [Link] impacts inclu
de
a) habitat loss and species extinction: resulting in species losing shelter, food, and breeding gr
ounds. species are threatened with extinction because they no longer have suitable conditio
ns to survive.
b) disruption to species migration and behavior: reducing the availability of natural habitats th
at they would normally use during migratory journeys.
c) altered nutrient cycling: resulting from the loss of trees and forest vegetation, has a detrime
ntal impact on food chains and ecosystem productivity.
d) loss of biotopes: disrupting the balance of aquatic ecosystems has long-term impacts on hu
man life and the environment as a whole.
e) disruption of predator-prey balance: Decrease in the number of predators leads to uncontrol
led population of herbivorous animals can result in destruction of vegetation and plants, du
e to excess food caused by excessive numbers.
4. Deforestation Consequences
The application of criminal sanctions can be imposed cumulatively, Article 97 of Law No.
32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management.
Criminal sanctions of imprisonment and fines vary greatly depending on the nature of the
act and the consequences caused. Imprisonment varies between 1-15 years, while fines range
from Rp. 500,000,000,- to Rp. 15,000,000,000,-.
Specifically, unauthorized logging that results in environmental destruction is related to th
e application of Art. 109 UUPPLH which states that: Any person who conducts business and/
or activities without having an environmental license as referred to in Art. 36 paragraph (1), s
hall be punished with imprisonment for a minimum of 1 (one) year and a maximum of 3 (thre
e) years and a fine of at least Rp. 1,000,000,000.00 (one billion rupiah) and a maximum of Rp.
3,000,000,000.00 (three billion rupiah).
5. Deforestation Solution
You can contribute to the efforts against deforestation by doing these easy steps:
1. Plant More Trees: You can take part in local or international tree-planting campaigns.
Planting trees enhances the ecosystem's equilibrium, purifies the air, and offers refuge
to a variety of animal species.
2. Go Paperless: Make the move to digital forms at home and at work to cut down on pa
per usage. Use both sides of the paper while printing in order to cut down on waste. T
his lessens the strain on the forests that provide the raw ingredients for paper.
3. Buy and Use Responsibly: Give your purchase considerable thought. Purchase only w
hat you require, giving preference to goods that come in reusable or minimally packag
ed forms. You can lessen the burden on forest land by cutting back on the purchase of
goods that need raw materials from forests.
4. Recycle and Buy Recycled Products: Purchase recycled goods and recycle them after
use to help the recycling economy. By doing this, you contribute to lowering the quan
tity of garbage that ends up in landfills and the demand for new raw materials, many o
f which come from forests.
5. Support Sustainable Agriculture: Purchase from nearby farmers who practice sustaina
ble farming to help support sustainable agriculture. This promotes ecologically friendl
y farming methods and lessens the need for forest land to be turned into agricultural la
nd.
6. Using Renewable Energy: Reducing the need for deforestation brought on by mining
and drilling operations is possible by utilizing renewable energy sources like solar, wi
nd, or hydroelectric power. Making the move to renewable energy helps to keep the e
nvironment sustainable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
(Please use your own words. Simple is okay but not copying dear ;-))
Remember, every action counts. By making informed choices, we can contribute to pr
eserving our forests and securing the future of our planet. And remember… every pro
duct that is made out of trees is Recyclable. So practice recycling diligently
