Allow Remote Connections to SQL Server Express

Adlib PDF Enterprise 5.x, SQL Server Express Edition 2008 and above, Windows Server 2008 and above

Symptoms

When attempting to install Adlib PDF Enterprise or an individual component of Adlib PDF Enterprise from a remote server and Microsoft SQL Server Express was used as the S
database, remote connections are disabled by default and the installation may fail.

Cause

Microsoft SQL Server Express is typically used locally on the server and remote connections are disabled by default.

Solution

The following settings must be performed on the Windows Server that contains the SQL Server Express installation.

1. Enable TCP Connections in SQL Server Configuration Manager

Navigate to Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (or whichever version you have installed) -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Configuration Manager

Expand SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Server Network Configuration and select the Protocol list for your SQL Server Instance (With a default installation, you wou
see "Protocols for SQLEXPRESS").

Make sure that the TCP/IP protocol in the right pane has a status of "Enabled". If it is presently Disabled, right click on the row and select "Enable".

2. Enable SQL Browser Service

Navigate to the Windows Services List (Start -> Run -> "[Link]").

Right-click on the "SQL Server Browser" service and select Properties.

Set the startup type to "Automatic", click on the [ Start ] button below to start the service, and click [ OK ] to accept the changes.

3. Verify Browser Service Registry Setting is Correct

Navigate to the Windows Registry (Start -> Run -> "[Link]").

Navigate to:

(on 32-bit OS) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\SQL Browser\

(on 64-bit OS) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\SQL Browser\

Verify that the setting "SsrpListener" is set to 1 (if it is set to 0, modify the setting to 1).

4. Add "[Link]" and UDP Port 1434 to Inbound Firewall Rules

Navigate to the Windows Firewall (Start -> Run -> "[Link]").

Select "Inbound Rules" in the left column followed by "New Rule" in the far right column.

Select "Program" as the rule type and click [ Next > ]

Use the [ Browse... ] button to locate your [Link] executable file and click [ Next > ]. With a default installation this is typically located in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Binn\[Link]

Select "Allow the connection" as the Action and click [ Next > ].

Ensure Domain and Private Profiles are selected and click [ Next > ] (this may vary depending on your corporate policies).

Provide your new rule with a meaningful name and click [ Finish ].

Create a new rule by clicking on "New Rule..." in the far right pane.

Select "Port" as the rule type and click [ Next > ].

Select "UDP" as the port type, enter "1434" as the specific port number and click [ Next > ].

5. Restart your Windows Server to ensure the system changes are applied

After restarting the Windows server, the installation of SQL Server Express edition should now accept connections from clients running on remote servers including SQL Serve
Management Studio and Adlib PDF installations.
