Answer: The thin strands of thread that we see, are made of still thinner strands are called
fibers. There are two types of fibers: Natural fibre and Synthetic fibre.

Clothes.
3. What is a loom?
Answer: Loom is a machine in which weaving of cloth is done. It is power operated or
hand operated.
4. Name two ways in which fabrics are made from yarns.
Answer: Weaving and Knitting are used to make fabrics from yarn.
5. Name two devices used for spinning.
Answer: Takli and Charkha are the two machines used for spinning.
6. Differentiate between knitting and weaving.
Answer: The process of arranging two sets of yarns to make a fabric is called weaving
while In knitting, a single yarn is used to make a piece of fabric.

Answer: The process of making yarn from fiber is called spinning while In ginning, the

1. Explain the process of making cloth from cotton bolls?
Answer: The cotton is usually picked by hand. Then, the fibers are separated in the
process of ginning and turned into fiber. After that, we take that fiber and spin it in the
process of spinning and make it into a yarn. Them, we use the process of knitting and
weaving to make it into a fabric or a cloth. This is the process of making cloth from
cotton bolls.
2. Differentiate between fibres and fabrics.
Answer: Fibres are used to make yarns while Fabrics are used to make clothes.

3. What are the appropriate conditions for growth of jute? Name the place where it is most
widely grown.
Answer: The appropriate conditions for growing jute are:
1) The climate shall be hot and moist.
2) The soil shall be alluvial or loamy.
3) It shall be cultivated during rainy season.
4) It shall be harvested during it’s flowering stage.
The places where it is most widely grown are: Bangladesh, Thailand, India (West
Bengal, Bihar and Assam).
4. Explain the process of obtaining jute fibre from jute plant.
Answer: The jute plant is retted into fiber. Then, we spin the fiber in the process of
spinning and turn it into a yarn. Then, we do the process of weaving or knitting and turn
it into a jute fiber. This is the process of obtaining jute fiber from jute plant.
5. Classify different types of fibres with examples.
Answer:
Natural fibers: Natural fibers are fibers in which it is obtained from plants and
animals. For ex: Cotton, Wool, Silk, Jute e.t.c
Synthetic fibers: Synthetic fibers are fibers in which it is made manually and made
by chemical substances. For ex: Nylon, Polyester, Acrylic, Rayon e.t.c
