Simple Harmonic Motion and Waves Guide

The document covers two main topics: Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) and Waves. SHM is defined as oscillatory motion with acceleration proportional to displacement, illustrated by examples like pendulums and springs, while waves are categorized into mechanical and electromagnetic types, with properties such as reflection and refraction. Theoretical questions related to both topics are provided to deepen understanding of the concepts.

1.

Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)

Notes:
- SHM is the oscillatory motion in which acceleration is directly proportional to displacement and
directed toward the mean position.
- Examples: pendulum (small oscillations), spring-mass system.
- Equation of SHM: a = -ω²x.
- Period T = 2π/ω.
- Energy in SHM: interchange of kinetic and potential energy.
- Graph: displacement, velocity, acceleration against time.

Theoretical Questions:
1. Define simple harmonic motion with one example.
2. Derive the equation of motion for SHM.
3. What is the relationship between angular frequency and period?
4. Explain energy transformation in SHM.
5. Why is SHM considered a special type of oscillation?
6. Derive the time period of a simple pendulum.
7. What is phase difference in SHM?
8. State three conditions for motion to be simple harmonic.
9. Why is acceleration always directed to the mean position in SHM?
10. Differentiate between free oscillation and forced oscillation.
2. Waves (Types and Properties)

Notes:
- Types: mechanical waves (need medium), electromagnetic waves (travel without medium).
- Properties: reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization.
- Thermal and elastic waves are examples of mechanical waves.
- Equation of wave: v = fλ.

Theoretical Questions:
1. Distinguish between mechanical and electromagnetic waves.
2. State three properties of waves.
3. Derive the wave equation v = fλ.
4. What is diffraction? Give an example.
5. Why do electromagnetic waves travel in vacuum?
6. Define reflection of waves.
7. Explain the term refraction with diagram.
8. What is polarization and which wave can be polarized?
9. Distinguish between transverse and longitudinal waves.
10. State the similarities and differences between sound waves and light waves.
