Process overview
Overview
SAP EWM Exception Processing handles deviations from standard warehouse processes, ensuring smooth operations
even when unexpected issues arise.
pg. 1
For example, if a barcode is unreadable during goods receipt, EWM triggers an exception code, prompting the operator
to manually enter the item details or print a new label.
Exception handling in SAP EWM allows the detection of abnormal situations during warehouse processing right at the
time that they occur and enables an appropriate reaction and follow-on processing
Another common scenario is during picking, where if the system detects a stock discrepancy (e.g., expected quantity is 3
but only 2 are available), it flags an exception, allowing the warehouse staff to investigate—whether it’s a miscount,
damage, or misplaced stock. Similarly, during inbound, if a bin is under maintenance and we can’t access that then we
may have to change bin. These real-time exceptions help maintain accuracy and efficiency while minimizing disruptions
in warehouse workflows.
Config for exception code:
SAP EWM Exception Handling is set up in Customizing under SCM Extended Warehouse Management → Extended
Warehouse Management → Cross-Process Settings → Exception Handling.
Exception codes can be configured to be shown only in RF device or in HU or in Desktop. For testing, I’ve configured
following codes to be shown in desktop but in real world, mostly used in RF devices.
Badi’s available for exception processing:
/SCWM/ES_EXCP_EXC
Scenario:
pg. 2
1. Change quantity during put away- DIFD
2. Change destination bin - CHDB
3. Change quantity during picking - BIDP
End user steps:
System used: S/4 hana 2023 embedded EWM
Change quantity during put away- DIFD
Create PO
Po: 4500000073 with 5 qty
pg. 3
Create Inbound delivery
Inbound delivery: 180000005 created
Inbound delivery at EWM
Inbound delivery at monitor show up
pg. 4
Inbound delivery in EWM: 20301
pg. 5
Unload and GR delivery

Let’s check sap s/4 side what happened in PO
Gr posted with 5 qty
Put away
task created
pg. 6
Warehouse order: 20365 created
pg. 7
Confirm with Exception
Click on confirm in foreground for this warehouse order
Enter exception code: DIFD that means vendor sent only 3 qty instead of 5
pg. 8
Entering exception code is mandatory
See what happens in inbound delivery in SAP ewm:
Qty changes to 3
pg. 9
And in inbound delivery in S/4 side also get changed to 3 qty
pg. 10
And PO
2qty of gr reversal also happens. 102 movement type
pg. 11
Now 2 qty is still open and we can ask supplier to send it
This completes DIFD
Change destination bin during put away - CHDB
Created EWM inbound delivery
20302
Warehouse order:
20366
pg. 12
Confirm with exception
Click on “confirm in foreground”
And bin is: 021-08-18-01
But below bin is under maintenance or it is dirty or some other issue.
So I’ll change destination bin to 021-08-18-02
pg. 13
I get this message when I click on save:
pg. 14
System doesn’t allow to change bin without exception code.
Let’s put exception code: CHDB
pg. 15
Let’s test it with HU managed
HU managed inbound delivery:
pg. 16
Same step confirm in foreground for HU wt
Same issue when I changed bin without entering exception code
pg. 17
Let’s try this with RF device and get alert if destination bin is changed
Warehouse order: 20370
pg. 18
pg. 19
Changed destination bin from 021-08-19-01 to 021-01-05-05 after entering exception code.
