Color
Sorting
@itsplaytimeingles
With this material, children will be able to practice matching colors
and color recognition.
Here are some of the many reasons why learning colors is
important for children:
Colors are a way we describe and categorize things.
Learning colors helps children improve their verbal
communication, as they will practice saying the name of the
colors out loud.
Being able to identify colors and see that one color is different
from another is useful for children because it helps them to
begin problem-solving.
Learning the names of colors will broaden their vocabulary.
Learning the different colors and being able to identify them is
great for creative activities, such as coloring and drawing.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Print the COLOR MATS (page 5 - 16) and
laminate.
Print and cut out the color pictures for
each color (page 17 - 28). Laminate and
cut around each picture.
A FEW ACTIVITIES IDEAS:
Depending on the child's age, you can begin by presenting just
a few colors: Select 3 colors mat, mix up the pictures and let
your child sort them accordingly. For an extra challenge, you
can mix up 4 different color pictures, ensuring some pictures
won't have a corresponding mat. Example: Get the BLUE, RED
and YELLOW mat and mix up the yellow, blue, red and green
pictures.
Why not get children to apply their learning to the real world?
Invite them to sort other objects in your setting into these
different color groups. At home or at school: ask them to find
different objects (around the house or classroom) and bring
them to the corresponding mat.
Use them in an independent workstation, classroom center or
as a small group activity. Place all the pictures in a basket or
box. Children can sort them by color and place them on top of
the corresponding mat.
PS: This material is also great for teaching new English
words. Once the pictures are sorted by color, have the
children name what they found: PINK SHOES, BROWN BEAR,
BLUE T-SHIRT, YELLOW LEMON, RED FLOWER, GREEN LEAF...
I spy with my little eye...
You can also turn this material into a fun I SPY game, indoors or
outdoors. Each color mat comes with 10 matching color
pictures. Feel free to use all of them or just pick a few for the
game.
Ask the children to close their eyes and spread the picture
cards (face up) around the classroom, living room, or
garden (there's no need to hide the cards). Once you're
done, tell them to open their eyes
You can have all the children play at once or take turns.
Say: "I spy with my little eye something red" - all the children
will have to find one of the red picture cards and place them
on top of the red mat. (Alternatively, you can have one child
find something red, then let the next player search for a
different color.)
When the children get the hang of the game, they can take
turns saying "I spy with my little eye..." for the others to find.
