Mechanical Engineering Tutorial Questions

The document contains tutorial questions for a mechanical engineering course at Dedan Kimathi University, focusing on topics such as stress-strain behavior of ductile materials, design of solid and hollow shafts, and analysis of bending moments and shear forces. It includes specific calculations and criteria for shaft design under given constraints, as well as the development of shear force and bending moment diagrams for various loading conditions. Additionally, it addresses the determination of the second moment of area for a rectangular section.

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

EME 2211 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
TUTORIAL1 QUESTIONS

1. Describe with the aid of a well labeled stress-strain curve the behavior of a ductile material such
as annealed mild steel when under a pure tensile loading.

2. With the aid of sketches, show that for a solid circular shaft,

T Gθ τ
= =
J L r

Where: J is the second polar moment of area

G is the modulus of rigidity

θ is the angle of twist

r is the radius

L is the length of the shaft.

3.(a) Design a solid steel shaft to transmit a 18000 Nm torque with the following constraints: G= 85
GPa, the shear stress τ is not to exceed 60 MPa and the angle of twist per unit length θ/l is not
to exceed 0.40/m

(i) Determine the radius of the shaft using the shear strength criterion

(ii) Determine the radius of the shaft using the stiffness criterion

(c) If the shaft is required to be hollow and the outer radius is restricted to 80 mm,

(i) Determine the inner radius of the shaft using the shear strength criterion

(ii) Determine the inner radius of the shaft using the stiffness criterion

(d) Based on the finding on the appropriate shaft radius obtained in (b) and (c) above, calculate the
percentage savings in weight when the hollow shaft is used.

4. Develop the bending moment and shear force expressions for the following loading conditions
and draw the shear force and bending moment diagram to scale.
