Real-Life Applications of Limits in Calculus

The document presents a performance task focused on the real-life application of limits, using a marathon and a driving scenario as examples. It details how Alex calculates the time it takes to drive to school at a constant speed, concluding that it will take her 16.2 minutes. Additionally, it includes a rubric for evaluating the group's performance based on application, problem creation, calculation accuracy, and creativity.

Real-life application: In a Marathon
A marathon is 26.2 miles. This distance acts as a limit. A runner might aim to complete the race, getting
as close to the 26.2-mile mark as possible, but they can’t exceed it (or at least, not within the official race).
Their physical stamina and endurance impose a limit on how far they can run in a given timeframe.(Hal,
April 2013)
Real-life Problem:
Alex drives a car to school. She usually arrives on time, but sometimes she is late. She wants to ensure
that she is always on time. To do so, she wants to know the exact time it takes to reach the school while
driving at 20 km/h, given that the distance from her house to school is 5.4 km. How long will it take her
to get to school?

Here is a clear Image showing the distance between Alex’s house and the school:

Solution:
t = d/s Calculating the time
lim = (d/s) Limit Function
t→s

Given values:
s = 20 km/h
d = 5.4 km

Substitute the Given Values:

lim = 5.4/20
t→s
Answer:
0.27 hours or 16.2 minutes (0.27×60)
Therefore, Alex will take 16.2 minutes to drive at 20 km/h over a distance of 5.4 km from her house to
school. Thus, the limit exists.
