ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: (Assessment Criteria derived from Contents covered under
specific LO)
LO1: Understand the Basic Principles of Canal Design
Clearly describes the purpose of canals (irrigation, navigation, drainage, etc.).
Identifies the main objectives of canal design (safe water conveyance,
minimizing losses, and efficiency).
Explains the impact of proper canal design on agriculture, economy, and
environment.
Demonstrates understanding using real-world examples.
Correctly classifies canals (perennial, inundation, lined/unlined, distributaries,
and minors).
Identifies key components (headwork’s, regulator, distributaries, escapes, and
cross-drainage works).
Uses proper terminology and schematic sketches to show understanding.
Differentiates between lined and unlined canals with
advantages/disadvantages.
Applies Manning’s equation or Chezy’s formula to determine discharge/velocity.
Identifies different types of canal lining materials (concrete, brick, and
geomembrane).
Explains advantages and limitations of lining (seepage control, maintenance).
Evaluates seepage losses and recommends suitable lining options.
Considers cost-effectiveness and sustainability in selection.
Performs discharge, velocity, and cross-sectional area calculations accurately.
Selects appropriate side slopes and freeboard based on soil and flow
conditions.
Uses design charts, tables, or software (e.g., civil 3D) correctly.
Presents calculation results clearly with proper units.
LO2. Prepare survey data and surface models for canal projects
Correctly imports CSV/LandXML survey data into Civil 3D
Creates and edits a TIN surface with break lines and boundaries
Removes surface errors (spikes, gaps) and produces clean contour map
LO3. Design alignments and longitudinal profiles for canals
4
TG-2
Creates a continuous alignment with proper tangents and curves
Applies correct stationing and curve labeling
Designs a canal bed profile with correct slope and smooth transitions
LO4. Model canal cross-sections and corridors in 3D
Builds a typical canal section assembly with correct dimensions
Creates corridor targeting correct surface depth
Visualizes corridor in 3D without gaps or errors
LO5. Generate construction drawings and earthwork quantities

Exports all deliverables (DWG/PDF, quantity reports) with correct naming
conventions
Final deliverables meet project documentation standards
LO7. Complete a mini-project (end-to-end canal design)
