SOC Market & Pricing Research — Assignment Brief
Objective
Build a practical catalog of SOC-relevant solutions and vendors, then
analyze market position (via Gartner) and real-world licensing
models/prices.
What to do (3 parts)
Part A — Landscape (breadth)
For each category below, list ≥5 vendors (global or India-origin). Add a
1–2 line definition of the category
Categories to cover (starter list): -
Network & Perimeter:
Network Firewall (NGFW)
IDS/IPS
DDoS Protection
WAF
Secure Web Gateway/Proxy
CASB
Zero Trust Network Access
VPN/Remote Access
DNS Security
SD-WAN
Email Security
Endpoint & Identity:
Antivirus
EDR
XDR
Mobile Threat Defense (MTD)
MDM → Mobile Device Management
Patch Mgmt
DLP (Endpoint/Network/Cloud),
Access Mgmt (SSO/MFA)
PAM/PIM
Monitoring / Analytics / Hunting:
SIEM
SOAR
UEBA
Threat Intel Platform (TIP)
Breach & Attack Simulation (BAS)
External Attack Surface Mgmt. (EASM/ASM)
Vulnerability Mgmt.
Resilience / DFIR / GRC: Backup & DR (immutable)
DFIR tools
Malware Sandboxing/Detonation
Deception/Honeypots
Case Mgmt/ITSM (ServiceNow/Jira)
Part B — Gartner view (depth)
For each vendor you listed:
1. Identify the exact Gartner segment/MQ name (e.g., “Magic
Quadrant for Network Firewalls”).
2. Record the latest MQ year you found and the position (Leader /
Challenger / Visionary / Niche).
3. Mark “Newcomer?” if the product or vendor is newly appearing in
that MQ or launched in the last ~3 years.
If a category has no current Gartner MQ (e.g., some emerging areas),
write “No MQ” and use analyst alternatives (Forrester Wave, IDC
MarketScape) or credible third-party reviews. Always capture the source
URL and publish date.
Part C — Licensing & price reconnaissance
For each vendor:
Note the primary licensing metric (per-endpoint, per-user, per-
GB/day ingest, EPS, throughput Mbps, per-core, per-VM, tiered
features, marketplace SaaS, etc.).
Capture any public price you can find (USD & INR). If price is not
public, write “Quote only” and add a reseller/marketplace
reference link.
Grading XP Points
Coverage (all categories + ≥5 vendors each): 30 XP Points
Accuracy of Gartner mapping (right segment, year, position): 30 XP
Points
Pricing/licensing clarity + sources: 30 XP Points
Quality,Citations/screenshots completeness: 30 XP Points
How to research (quick guide)
Gartner: Search site:[Link] "Magic Quadrant" "<segment>"
<year> or vendor blogs announcing “Positioned as a Leader in
Gartner MQ for …”. Record publication date and the exact
segment name. Beware of outdated blog posts.
Example (just to illustrate format — students must do their own
research)
Category: Firewall (NGFW)
Vendor: Palo Alto Networks (example only)
Gartner Segment: (students fill: e.g., Magic Quadrant for Network
Firewalls)
MQ Position/Year, Licensing, Pricing, Sources, Logs: (students
research & fill)
