Experiment 1

Aim: To install and study Wireshark.

Steps for Installing Wireshark:

1. Go to the official website → [Link]
2. Download the Windows Installer (64-bit).
3. Run the installer and follow the setup.
○ Select WinPcap or Npcap (Npcap is preferred).
○ Install with default options.
4. After installation, launch Wireshark.

Basic Wireshark Usage:

1. Open Wireshark → You’ll see a list of available network interfaces (like Wi-Fi,
Ethernet).
2. Select your active network interface (the one connected to the internet).
3. Click the blue shark fin button (Start Capturing).
4. You’ll see live network traffic being captured.

Studying Network Traffic:

Wireshark captures packets. Each packet contains:
● Protocol (HTTP, TCP, UDP, DNS, ARP, etc.)
● Source & Destination IPs
● Ports
● Payload data

Useful Filters:
● http → Show only HTTP traffic.
● [Link] == 80 → Show TCP traffic on port 80.
● [Link] == [Link] → Show traffic to/from a specific IP.
● dns → Show only DNS queries and responses.
arp → Show ARP packets.

Example Study:
● Open [Link] in browser while capturing.
● Filter with dns → You’ll see your system asking for Google’s IP.
● Filter with tcp → You’ll see TCP handshakes (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK).
● Filter with http or tls → You’ll see website requests.

Conclusion
The installation and use of Wireshark as a packet sniffer successfully demonstrated how
network traffic can be captured, filtered, and analyzed in real time. By performing simple
packet captures such as DNS queries, HTTP requests, TCP handshakes, and ARP exchanges,
it was observed that Wireshark provides detailed insights into the structure and behavior of
network protocols. This exercise helped in understanding the flow of data, the role of each
protocol in communication, and the importance of packet analysis in troubleshooting,
monitoring, and securing computer networks.

Common questions

Packet analysis with Wireshark aids in troubleshooting by providing detailed insights into network communications, helping identify issues through protocol and packet flow examination. In monitoring, it allows tracking of real-time traffic and behavior patterns. For security, it detects anomalies and potential threats by analyzing packet contents and exchanges. This capability makes it invaluable for maintaining efficient, secure networks .

Analyzing TCP handshakes with Wireshark provides foundational understanding of reliable communication mechanisms. It demonstrates the connection-oriented nature of TCP through the SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK sequence, ensuring data integrity and ordered delivery. Recognizing this setup phase highlights TCP's role in establishing secure, stable pathways for data exchange .

Selecting the correct network interface in Wireshark is important because it determines the source of captured traffic, ensuring relevant data is recorded. Users can identify the active interface by looking for the one currently connected to the internet, typically showing activity or network usage in Wireshark's list of interfaces .

The steps for installing Wireshark on a Windows system include visiting the official download website, downloading the Windows Installer (64-bit), running the installer, selecting either WinPcap or Npcap, and then installing with default options. Npcap might be preferred over WinPcap because it is recommended and likely due to its enhanced compatibility and performance for capturing network traffic .

Understanding the structure and behavior of network protocols, as demonstrated by Wireshark captures, is crucial for effective network management. It aids in predicting how data flows, identifying and resolving communication issues, ensuring protocol compliance, and safeguarding against protocol-related vulnerabilities. Protocol insights gleaned from packet analysis underpin decisions in network design, setup, and security baselines, making comprehending these complexities an essential skill for network professionals .

Wireshark enables users to capture and analyze network traffic by allowing them to select an active network interface and start capturing data. In real time, it displays captured packets including details like protocol, source and destination IPs, ports, and payload data. Users can apply filters such as 'http' for HTTP traffic, 'tcp.port == 80' for TCP traffic on port 80, 'ip.addr == 192.168.1.1' for specific IP traffic, 'dns' for DNS queries/responses, and 'arp' for ARP packets to refine the analysis .

The study concludes that Wireshark serves as an invaluable educational tool for enhancing understanding of network protocols. It offers a practical, interactive experience in capturing and analyzing traffic, demonstrating protocol operations such as DNS resolutions, TCP handshakes, and HTTP requests. This hands-on approach solidifies theoretical knowledge, promotes intuitive learning of network mechanics, and equips learners with insights applicable in real-world troubleshooting and network security .

By using Wireshark to capture traffic while opening Google.com, several insights can be derived: filtering with 'dns' reveals the system querying Google's IP; using 'tcp' shows the TCP handshake process; 'http' or 'tls' filters expose the specifics of website requests. This illustrates the flow and interaction of different protocols and highlights Wireshark's utility in understanding data flow and protocol roles in communication .

Useful filters in Wireshark allow focused analysis by limiting the view to specific traffic types based on protocols or specific attributes. Filters like 'http', 'tcp.port == 80', 'ip.addr == 192.168.1.1', 'dns', and 'arp' enable users to isolate relevant packets, reducing noise and highlighting communication relevant to investigation. This tailored approach facilitates deep dives into protocol behaviors, troubleshooting specific issues, and understanding targeted network interactions .

Through Wireshark's packet analysis, various protocols can be observed in action, each with significant roles in data communication. HTTP and TLS handle web requests and secure transmissions, respectively. TCP manages connections via handshakes, showing reliability and ordered data transfer. DNS resolves domain names to IP addresses for leading traffic direction. ARP maps IP addresses to hardware MAC addresses, crucial for local network interaction. This reveals the layered and interdependent nature of protocol functions .
