Prompt:

The owner of a small chain of specialty coffee shops located in urban areas
across the mid-Atlantic is preparing to expand into new neighborhoods.
Before expanding, they want to better understand customer preferences
when it comes to coffee quality, pricing, and ambiance.
Recently, the owner noticed that sales have dropped in two branches, even
though customer foot traffic appears consistent. They want to figure out why
people are visiting but not buying as much, and how to adapt offerings in the
new locations.
They’re considering hiring a market research firm to recommend and execute
research designs that would best suit their needs. As a marketing intern,
they’ve come to you for advice before hiring the market research firm.

Using a generative AI tool, such as Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, or


ChatGPT, develop a prompt that would help the owner decide whether they
need a market research firm or not. Compile the prompt and output in a
Word document and submit the document.
My Response:
I used Ai to help me develop a list that could help the owner decide whether
market research is necessary or not. After a couple attempts I found a good
prompt.

AI:

“I own a small chain of specialty coffee shops located in urban areas across
the mid-Atlantic region. I’m planning to expand into new neighborhoods but
recently noticed that two of my current branches have experienced declining
sales despite consistent foot traffic. I want to understand:

1. Whether I should hire a market research firm to conduct in-depth


research.
2. What types of research (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods)
would best help me understand customer preferences regarding coffee
quality, pricing, and ambiance.
3. Possible reasons why people are visiting but not buying as much.
4. How to adapt offerings in new locations based on data-driven insights.
Based on these factors, provide recommendations on whether hiring a
market research firm is necessary, and if not, what alternative research
methods I could use instead.”

Practical Use:

This prompt offers questions that my manager can now give me


answers to. I can then either respond myself or go back and answer these
prompt questions, and AI will give me an accurate response.
