The Solar System

Introduction
The solar system consists of the Sun, eight planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other
celestial bodies bound by gravity. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a cloud of gas
and dust.

The Sun
The Sun is a medium-sized star that provides light and heat, driving weather and supporting
life on Earth. It makes up 99.8% of the system’s mass.

Planets
There are eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars (terrestrial planets), and Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune (gas and ice giants).

Moons and Small Bodies

Moons orbit planets, while smaller objects like asteroids, comets, and meteoroids provide
insight into the solar system’s origins.

Exploration
Space missions have studied planets and sent probes to the outer reaches, greatly
expanding human understanding of the cosmos.

Conclusion
The solar system is a dynamic neighborhood. Studying it reveals the processes that shaped
Earth and guides the search for life elsewhere.
