Fake news: quotes of different known people about the arrest of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (FPRRD)

Fact news: Satirical and created to misinform others or tricked several individuals following the arrest of former
President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court.

In today's generation, where social media serves as an extension of our daily lives, it is undeniably one of
the most powerful tools for spreading information. These platforms facilitate rapid dissemination of news and
updates, allowing users to stay informed in real time. However, this power also comes with significant challenges, as
social media can equally serve as a conduit for spreading misinformation and fake news.

For instance, a report by GMA TV Network highlighted how satirical posts involving fictional characters,
such as Elle Woods from the movie Legally Blonde, were falsely attributed with quotes during the arrest of former
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Despite the humorous and fictitious nature of these posts, some members of the
older generation, particularly baby boomers, believed them to be true and further shared them across various social
media platforms. This example underscores the vulnerability of certain demographics to misinformation and the ease
with which false content can spread online.

The duality of social media as both an information disseminator and a vector for misinformation has
profound implications. While many users appreciate the convenience and immediacy of news through social media,
studies show that a significant portion of the public recognizes the risks of manipulation through false information.
In fact, surveys indicate that a majority believe social media contributes to political polarization and the spread of
rumors, which can deepen societal divisions.

Addressing this issue requires increased awareness and digital literacy among users, enabling them to
critically evaluate the content they encounter. Moreover, as social media platforms continue to evolve, incorporating
advanced AI-driven content curation and moderation, there is potential to better combat misinformation while
preserving the benefits of rapid information sharing.
