Due Date: 14 August 2025 (in-class)
Q1) A shaft 6.00 cm in diameter is being pushed axially through a bearing sleeve 6.02 cm in
diameter and 40 cm long. The clearance, assumed uniform, is filled with oil whose properties
are ν = 0.003 m2/s and G = 0.88. Estimate the force required to pull the shaft at a steady
velocity of 0.4 m/s. Assume that the velocity distribution in the clearance is linear.
Q2) Oil of viscosity (μ) and density (ρ) drains steadily down the side of a tall,
wide vertical plate, as shown in the figure. In the region shown, fully
developed conditions exist; that is, the velocity profile shape and the film
thickness are independent of distance ‘z’ along the plate. The vertical
velocity ‘w’ becomes a function only of ‘x’, and the shear resistance from
the atmosphere is negligible.
(a) Sketch the approximate shape of the velocity profile w(x),
considering the boundary conditions at the wall and at the film surface.
(b) Suppose film thickness ‘δ’ and the slope of the velocity profile at the
wall, (dw/dx)wall, are measured. Find an expression for the viscosity of the oil as a function of
ρ, δ, (dw/dx)wall, and the gravitational acceleration ‘g’. Note that, for the coordinate system
given, both ‘w’ and (dw/dx)wall are negative.
Q3) The density of seawater at a free surface where the pressure is 98 kPa is approximately 1030
kg/m3. Taking the bulk modulus of elasticity of seawater to be 2.34 x 109 N/m2 and expressing
variation of pressure with depth(z) as dP = ρg dz; determine the density and pressure at a
depth of 2500 m. Disregard the effect of temperature.
Q4) For each variable given here, list at least two commonly used units, and detail the conversion
between the units: Volumetric flow rate (Q) ; Mass flow rate (m) ; Pressure (p) ; absolute
viscosity (μ) ; kinematic viscosity (ν) ; bulk modulus (E) ; head-loss (HL)
Q5) A fluid flows through a horizontal conical pipe having an inlet diameter of 200 mm and an
outlet diameter of 400 mm and a length of 2 m. The velocity over any cross section may be
considered to be uniform. Determine the convective and local acceleration at a section where
the diameter is 300 mm. Consider a constant inlet discharge of 0.3 m3/s.
