INTRODUCTION

Cst Chivandire told members of the public that mentally


challenged people are vulnerable to all sorts of abuse and
people do not understand disability issues. Mentally challenged
people are under denial even by their guardians. She added
that some guardians living with mentally challenged people go
to church or to wedding ceremonies living the mentally
challenged people at home fearing to expose them to the
congregation. She added that leaving them unattended pave
way to offenders who take that advantage and sexually abused
them.
She went on to say that its most disturbing that mentally
retarded people do not narrate or account events and cases are
noted through pregnant or illness .The cases are reported late
to the extent that the pregnancy will not be able to
terminate .She therefore urged the guardians that they should
show them love and also built a close relationship with them so
that when they fell prey to abuse they could quickly notice
some changes on them rather that abandoning them.
Cst Chivandire also added that there are misconceptions from
traditional healers and prophets sexual with a mentally
retarded person cures HIV and brings wealth.
She then told them that besides rape cases, their section deals
with cases like indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault,
section 70 (having sexual intercourse with a minor and
domestic violence .She told them that most of the cases
received occurred at homes where victims are abused by their
close associates and relatives. Few cases occurred in the
bushes mostly where victims are school children who are
abused while on their way to and from school.

Sibanda urged the gathering to desist from any form of [Link] said
that her office has received more cases of domestic violence and during
investigations the greatest cause is financial [Link] urged the
gathering to be open about their finances and to share their earnings
equally to avoid squabbles about [Link] asked the gathering to try by
all means to solve all their issues amicably and if that proves
impossible,to look for a mediator to smooth things [Link] Sibanda said
that the courts had now set stiffer penalties for perpetrators as a way to
reduce the offence.
HAVING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH A YOUNG PERSON.
Cst Chivandire started off by telling the gathering that there is no one who
is allowed to have a romantic or sexual relationship with any girl child
under the age of 16 [Link] is an offence to have any such
[Link] girls are being easily lured into relationships with
money and fancy [Link] were therefore urged to look after their
children jealously as this protects them from these [Link] they
were urged to have open relationships with their daughters and to urge
the girls to talk to them [Link] she emphasized on the sharing of
rooms by different sexes as this leads them to experiment since they are
exposed to a lot of unhealthy content from the internet.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Cst Chivandire started by defining domestic violence as an
unlawful act or behavior which results in deaths or the direct
infliction of physical, sexual or mental injury to any complainant
or respondent. She told the members of the public that
domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race,
age, sex, and religion or gender identity. So she urged
members of the public to think twice before committing any
domestic violence offence to their spouses or relatives as this
will not solve the problem but will worsen it, culprits will be
arrested, imprisoned some will be fined and the children will be
left with only one parent and this will affect them socially,
financially and mentally.
Cst Chivandire advised member of the public to seek
assistance from church leader, traditional leaders and elderly
people if they had a misunderstanding. She urged them to
solve their issues before committing any offence.

HAVING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH A YOUNG PERSON


Cst Murenje informed the public to vigilantly monitor their
children and the girl child should not be left with a boy child
alone. She went on to say that nowadays, young children are
sex loving and they can fall victim if they are not closely
monitored. She told them to try by all means to provide
separate sleeping rooms for girls and boys to avoid
mischievous of the children. She castigated that many of the
children do not consider protected sex so some of them who
are HIV positive will end up affecting others.
RAPE
Cst Chivandire told the gathering that rape cases on the
highway Harare-Masvingo are on the increase so she urged
members to desist from boarding private vehicle but rather use
public service vehicle for transport to avoid being victims.
She told them that everyone can be a victim of sexual abuse so
they must be careful.
She went on to say if anyone came to be a victim must quickly
report the matter to police so that the accused person will be
put to book and the victim will be referred to hospital for
medical examination and treatment.
Lastly she said members of the public must work hand in glove
with police in order to curb crime and she thanked all for their
time

Sgt Sibanda started by introducing themselves as Victim


Friendly Unit members at Featherstone police. She told them
that their goal is to be supportive of victims and make
environment conducive, private and friendly. To protect victims
who have suffered a serious or who are at the risk of suffering a
serious harm.

RAPE

Sgt Sibanda went on to state that rape is whereby a male


person had sexual intercourse with a female without her
consent. She went on to say this is a serious offence which
warrant mandatory sentence and they were urged to report all
rape cases to the police or anyone who can assist at that
moment even if the accused person threatens to kill them. The
gathering was told that they should report rape cases as soon
as possible so that the victim will be taken to hospital for
medication. She also indicated that those cases should be
reported earlier within 72 hours such that they can be given
emergency treatment to prevent unwanted pregnancies and
sexual transmitted diseases. She also stated that it is an added
advantage to report these cases as victim will be given
counseling

that they will be able to move on with life. She said it also
enable police to apprehend the suspect before they run away
and it helps them for the collection of evidence.

Indecent Assault.

Cst Chivandire told the gathering that it is an offensive sexual


act or series of acts exclusive of rape committed against
another person without consent

.interacting with someone physically in any other way to which


they did not consent.

She urged member to report all cases of indecent assault to


police and she thanked all the members of the public for giving
them an opportunity to have an awareness campaign.

Cst Murenje started by telling the gathering that most of the people are
reporting this case as rape because they do not understand the difference
between the two and this is the main reason why most of rape cases are
being finalised with accused being acquited. She went on to explain that it
is an offence for any male person to have sexual intercourse with a female
person who is above the age of 12 years and below the age of 16years
despite the fact that she had consented to [Link] warned all male adults to
desist from the habit of engaging in love affairs with school children and
young girls who are below the age of 16years as this affects the future of
the girls.
Lastly she thanked the people who were present for paying attention and
urged them not to hesitate to demand the services of the Victim Friendly
Unit if there is a need at any given time since it is their duty to assist.
