Modifiers

Modifier is something that changes or adds detail to another element. It is a word, phrase, or
clause that describes or limits the meaning of another word. It extends the sentence.

Pre modifiers: Pre modifiers is that what appears before/left side of the noun.

A very brilliant European English professor. A tall handsome boy.

There are few types of Pre modifiers:

Determiner They are mainly Articles or Numbers.


Specify which one, how many, or whose.
The house, A dog, These chairs.

Adjective It describes quality, size, color, etc.


An old town, a heavy car, A tall guy.
Participle Add action-based description.
running water, broken window, boiling kettle

Possessive It is used to show ownership, relationship, or association.


My book, our school, his house…

Demonstrative It is used to specify which one we are talking about.


This book is very interesting. That is the stadium.

Noun before a noun. To give it more specific meaning.


I like chicken soup. Chicken specifies what type of soup it
Noun is. The is a car engine. Car specifies engine type.
It is my birth right. Birth specifies the type of right.

Cardinal Adjective It is an adjective that expresses a number or quantity.


One book is enough. Two cats are there.

Ordinal Adjective Ordinal adj shows order (first, second, third).


He is the first boy. The third car is mine

Intensifier It strengthens or weakens the meaning.


Extremely hot day. (extremely” intensifies hot)
So beautiful a painting. (so” intensifies beautiful)
