Chapter 1 - Introduction
Yeast Infection is also known as Candidiasis or Candida albicans or
Candida. It is a widespread condition that affects up to 80% of people
between the ages of 15 to 30. Scientific evidence shows that the incidence
is on the rise and most scientists agree that this is due to the increased use
of antibiotics, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy

Throughout this book we will be referring to the condition it by its most

popular name Candidiasis.

Candidiasis was a very rare condition as recently as 30 years ago, however

now the illness is affecting the health of about 33% of all people. Dr
Leyardia Black, N.D., of Lopez Island, Washington says: "Candidiasis is
basically a disease resulting from medical developments like antibiotics,
birth control pills, and estrogen replacement therapy, and it can be
triggered at a very young age, when children are first being treated with
antibiotics."

We All Have Candida

Candidiasis is usually described as an overgrowth of the usually friendly
yeast (or fungus) Candida albicans in the gastrointestinal tract of the body.
In other words everyone has Candida albicans in their body. It normally
lives in the bowels, vagina, and the skin. In healthy people with good
immune systems, it is usually harmless and is kept in check or balanced by
other "good" bacteria in the body.
The problems usually start when the Candida albicans overgrows, in other
words the balance is disturbed, which normally happens when the body’s
immune system is exhausted, or when the lining of the intestinal tract is
damaged. What happens is that the body can then absorb Candida cells and
particles of cells as well as various toxins excreted by the Candida,
transporting it to other parts of the body outside their normal habitat,
resulting in serious disruption of normal body processes.

The condition of chronic Candidiasis has been defined by the medical

establishment for many years but most doctors did not understand the
magnitude of the problem until Orion Truss published The Missing Di‐
agnosis and William Crook published The Yeast Connection. Since the
publication of those works the public and many physicians became aware of
the size of the problem and also realized how many common ailments are
actually related to or aggravated by Candidiasis.

Candidiasis has in recent times become recognized as a multifaceted

medical syndrome called chronic Candidiasis, or the yeast syndrome which
is the cause of a wide range of adverse conditions in virtually every system
of the body, with the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, nervous, and
immune systems being the most vulnerable.

However, having said that, it is still surprising that despite the widespread
occurrence of Candidiasis the conventional medical establishment still
ignores the symptoms of Candidiasis mainly because it so closely imitate
the symptoms of other conditions.

Alternative physicians are much more alert, recognizing the seriousness of

Candidiasis and employ a variety of alternative methods that offer safe and
effective relief, while conventional medicine has often been ineffective in
treating Candidiasis.

Dr Deborah Metzger, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of Helena Women's

Health in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California says: "The vast majority
of conventional doctors do not believe in the possibility of a systemic
overgrowth of the common fungus C. albicans, let alone know about self-
care treatments for the problem."

She has found that half the women with endometriosis in her practice have
this fungal overgrowth and that treating the fungus often helps relieve the
intense fatigue that strikes most women with the disease.

Feeling Sick All Over

The common complaint from Candidiasis sufferers is that they "feel sick all
over." Fatigue, allergies, immune system malfunction, depression, chemical
sensitivities, and digestive disturbances are just some of the symptoms
patients with the yeast syndrome may experience.
Women are 8 times more likely to experience Candidiasis than men and this
is obviously due to the effects of estrogen, birth-control pills, and the higher
number of prescriptions for antibiotics that women get.

Alternative physicians usually follow a holistic approach to treat

Candidiasis because they know there is no single wonder substance which
can cure the condition quickly. Their treatments are usually very successful
and if you follow the regimen provided in this book you will reap the
benefits.
Most people make the mistake to concentrate on only one of the items in
the regimen, while they should be following the entire treatment at the same
time to guarantee success.

Believe me, if naturopaths and alternative physicians could recommend

only one or two treatments and they would work they would do that. Dr
Lani Lopez

The 5 Step Plan to Cure Candidiasis

The last part of this book will detail the comprehensive 5-step approach to
the successful elimination of chronic Candidiasis.

Step 1: Finding and Addressing the Predisposing Factors

Step 2: Boost Your Immune Function
Step 3: Detoxification and Elimination
Step 4: Follow the Candida-Control and Elimination Diet
Step 5: Follow the Nutritional Support Guidelines

If you follow these easy steps it should take care of chronic Candidiasis and
if that does not work then chronic Candidiasis might not be the problem or
underlying factor of your illness.

It's Not Just in Your Head

Individuals who suffer from a Candida infection sometimes have a sense
that they are not themselves, that something is seriously wrong.
Unfortunately, their doctors often cannot find a physical cause and send
them home without an adequate diagnosis.
Because these patients suffer from depression, anxiety, and moodiness
which are all symptoms of Candidiasis they are often told that their
ailments are psychological in origin.

Many doctors will prescribe antidepressant medications and recommend a

psychiatrist or therapist.

C. Orion Truss, M.D., of Birmingham, Alabama, a Candida expert and

author of The Missing Diagnosis, says that chronic Candidiasis is almost
always labeled psychosomatic and treated as a nervous disorder. "Yeast may
lead to such a variety of symptoms that the condition is easily confused with
illnesses that are psychological in nature," he says. "This has resulted in the
heavily disproportionate application of psychiatric methods of treatment in
patients whose only psychological problems are those that have been
brought on by the failure of the medical profession to correct their long-
standing, frustrating illnesses."

What is Candidiasis?
Basic Description
The condition of Candidiasis is also referred to as Yeast Infection, Yeast
Overgrowth and Candida Albicans. As we have explained before -
Candidiasis is an overgrowth of the benign (friendly) yeast (or fungus)
Candida albicans in the gastrointestinal tract of the body. This means that
everyone has Candida albicans in their body. It normally lives in the
bowels, vagina, and the skin. In healthy people with good immune systems,
it is usually harmless and is kept in check or balanced by other "good"
bacteria in the body.

When the Candida albicans overgrows the balance is disturbed, which

normally happens when the body’s immune system is exhausted, or when
the lining of the intestinal tract is damaged, the body absorbs Candida cells
and particles of cells as well as various toxins excreted by the Candida,
transporting it to other parts of the body outside their normal habitat,
resulting in serious disruption of normal body processes making us sick.

Detailed Description
Dr Lani Lopez one of the leading naturopaths in New Zealand provides the
following definition:

“Candida (Candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of yeast, leading to

fungal infection. This commonly occurs within the mouth, ears, nose,
gastro-intestinal tract or genital tract, e.g. vagina. Candida is part of our
normal microflora, meaning that it is supposed to be residing harmoniously
within our bodies. However, due to the causes outlined below, Candida can
become opportunistic, thriving, growing and causing an imbalance in our
normal internal microflora. Candida overgrowth produces toxins
(canditoxins) that travel through the bloodstream affecting all of our body's
organs and tissues”.

We now know that every person on earth has the Candida albicans yeast in
their body. It is a friendly form of yeast that lives in the lower bowels, the
vagina, and the skin and it co-exists with other friendly forms of bacteria
such as bifidobacteria and acidophilus. In healthy people there is always a
happy balance between the yeast and bacteria, however whenever the
body’s immune system is compromised for any reason, this happy balance
is disturbed opportunistic Candida will take their chance and start
propagating, resulting in the infection of other body tissues.

When the Candida becomes pathogenic (meaning it turns from friend to

foe) it transforms itself from a simple yeast into an aggressive fungus and
causes severe diseases. William G. Crook, M.D., author of The Yeast
Connection, describes Candida as a kind of microbiological Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde.

Dr James Braly, M.D., of Hollywood, Florida says: "When the fungal form
of Candida occurs in the body, allergenic substances can penetrate into the
blood more easily, where they form immense complexes, and perhaps even
promote food allergy reactions. Since their symptoms are often interrelated,
Candidiasis should usually be treated together with food allergies”.

It is important to know that Candidiasis can and usually do affect areas of

the body far removed from Candida colonizations in the gastrointestinal
tract and vagina. This is also one of the reasons why conventional medical
practitioners cannot make the connection between Candidiasis and other
diseases.

Candida also manufactures a variety of toxins that restrain the body’s

immune function, by reducing white blood cells needed to fight infection,
and prevent the manufacturing of antioxidants such as glutathione.
Dr. Braly also says Candidiasis symptoms cover a wide range and the
condition can cause a number of diseases, ranging from; allergies, vaginitis,
thrush, genitourinary tract problems, eyes, liver, heart, or central nervous
system as well as much more serious conditions such as autoimmune
diseases including cancer, Addison's disease, AIDS. ADD, ADHD and
many others. Other common issues caused by Candidiasis are digestive
problems such as; bloating, cramping, gas, and diarrhea, respiratory
problems, coughing, wheezing, earaches, central nervous system
imbalances, generalized fatigue, and loss of libido.

See Chapter 3 for more details about symptoms and compare your
symptoms with the list provided there.

Candida - A Sleeky Disease Causing Fungus

Candida- A Stealth Pathogen?
The concept that Candida albicans (or other strains of Candida) can pass
through the intestines into general blood circulation was first established
many years ago, yet in conventional medical circles, the importance of
Candida involvement in health is still largely undervalued.
In 1969, DR W. Krause, Ph.D., demonstrated that intact Candida albicans
organisms are capable of escaping the intestinal tract and reaching the blood
and urine in humans.

After he was carefully screened for any prior illness or exposure to

Candida, Dr. Krause ingested a large dose of Candida albicans orally. In a
surprisingly short time, just a few hours later, he developed numerous
symptoms, including headaches and fever. The scientists working with Dr.
Krause were able to culture Candida organisms from his blood and urine;
the colonies were found to be identical to the strain administered.' Dr.
Krause's bold experiment proved that it is possible for Candida to cross the
gastrointestinal tract in a viable form and cause systemic illness in healthy
patients.

The researchers also concluded that antibiotic use may be a common

precursor in cases of systemic Candidiasis and increased intestinal
permeability. Despite Dr. Krause's experiment, there is still controversy
over the idea that Candida can systemically translocate to distant sites in the
body as a kind of "stealth pathogen" and cause illness.

Chapter 2 - Causes of Candidiasis
We now know that Candidiasis is the result of an imbalance in the flora
(friendly bacteria) in our bodies, where the Candida albicans got the upper
hand and start spreading it’s toxins to other parts of the body. So let us have
a look at what exactly is it that causes this imbalance.

14 Predisposing Factors
Factors that cause Candida overgrowth also called predisposing factors are:
1. Altered bowel flora
2. Decreased digestive secretions i.e. poor gastric acid output
3. Dietary factors
4. Prolonged use of drugs particularly antibiotics and hormone
replacement drugs as well as thyroid hormone use, some medications
including asthma steroids
5. Hormonal imbalance and oral contraceptives
6. Impaired immunity caused by diabetes, gall-stones, liver dysfunction,
HIV, AIDS, immune diseases acquired or genetic
7. Immunosuppressive drugs including steroids
8. Impaired liver function and toxicity
9. Nutrient deficiency eating a diet high in sugar or refined carbohydrate
diets
10. Underlying disease states
11. Excessive alcohol intake
12. Pregnancy
13. Stress
14. Infection
Women Are More Vulnerable
Dr Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., of London, England, says: "Fully 35% of
women using birth control pills have associated cases of acute vaginal
Candidiasis and there are undoubtedly many others who have less
pronounced evidence of yeast overgrowth as immune competence is
gradually compromised by the hormonal onslaught,"

Dr Murray Susser, M.D., of Santa Monica, California says: “Since yeast

infections enter the body easily through the vagina, and yeast is fostered by
estrogen, women of childbearing age are more vulnerable to Candidiasis.
Also, women who have been pregnant are susceptible, since hormonal
changes encourage Candida overgrowth”.

Men Also Develop Candidiasis

The main root causes for Candidiasis in men are prolonged use of
antibiotics, high sugar intake, or immune suppression (from illness, toxins,
and stress) as well as excessive alcohol intake and infections. Stress being
one of the main culprits.

Candidiasis is a "Multi-Factorial" Condition

Chronic Candidiasis is a classic example of a "multi-factorial" condition, as
indicated by the list of predisposing factors noted above.

Dr. Chaitow says: "All too often, more than one influence is operating.
Over a few years, a patient may have had several series of antibiotics for a
variety of conditions, while using steroids as well, perhaps in the form of
the contraceptive pill. If the patient most commonly a young woman-also
happens to be living on a diet that is rich in sugars, then the Candida is
very likely to have spread beyond its usual borders into new territory."

Dr. Chaitow goes on and says: “When the immune system is completely
suppressed (as in AIDS), yeast proliferates freely and colonizes the body
and bloodstream, leading to septicemia (blood poisoning). In less drastic
but more prevalent cases, the immune system is temporarily suppressed and
helper T cells (lymphocytes that pass into the bloodstream to help fight
infection) are destroyed. Such immune suppression can be due to any
number of factors, such as poor diet (including ingestion of pesticide
residues and preservatives), alcohol use, chemotherapy, radiation, exposure
to environmental toxins, antibiotics that injure or destroy the T cells, and
stress. Consequently, conditions are created for opportunistic infections-and
yeast-to grow”.

Therefore if follows that the most effective treatment must involve the
addressing and correcting of the predisposing factors. It must be clear that
there is much more to it than just killing the yeast with antifungal agents,
whether synthetic or natural.

Antibiotics is the Main Culprit

The increased use of antibiotics to cure all is also linked to the increase in
the occurrence of Candidiasis over the last 3 decades or more.

It has been proven that antibiotics suppress the immune system and the
normal intestinal bacteria that prevent yeast overgrowth, which then has the
effect that the growth of Candida is promoted.
Dr. Susser says: “Antibiotics-life-saving cures for many diseases-may be
the single greatest cause of Candidiasis, because antibiotic treatment for
infections is non-discriminatory, killing the "good" intestinal bacteria as
well as the "bad" infection-causing bacteria”.

The acidophilus and biffidobacteria in our bodies produce natural antifungal

substances in order to control overproduction of yeast. The "good" bacteria
produces the B vitamin called biotin, which have the sole purpose to keep
the yeast in check. However when biotin levels are low or absent, as a result
of damage by antibiotics to the levels of acidophilus, bifidobacteria, and the
normal microflora ecology, yeast has a chance to change into a different
organism, an encroaching mycelial (vegetative) fungus.

There is no argument about the fact that the appropriate use of antibiotics
saves lives and has saved the lives of many millions of people since its
discovery. But it is also true that conventional medical practitioners are
using antibiotics as a “cure all” treatment for many conditions that could be
treated much more effectively with alternative measures.

Prescribing antibiotics for conditions such as acne, recurrent bladder

infections, chronic ear infections, chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and
nonbacterial sore throats does not make sense. In those cases antibiotics
hardly ever provide any advantage while it can be treated much more
effectively with natural measures.
Dr. Chaitow explains: "Candida puts down minute rootlets that penetrate
the tissues on which the yeast is growing. When this happens to be the inner
wall of the intestines, it breaks down the barrier that exists between the
closed world of the bowel and the body. Toxic debris, yeast waste products,
and partially digested proteins are allowed into the bloodstream, resulting
in allergic and toxic reactions."

The widespread unnecessary use and abuse of antibiotics is a cause for big
concern, not only because of the chronic Candidiasis epidemic, but also due
to the development of "superbugs" that are resistant to currently available
antibiotics. The World Health Organization and many other leading
scientists have been issuing warnings that we might soon find ourselves in
"post-antibiotic era" in which many infectious diseases will once again
become almost impossible to treat.

Dr. Chaitow says. "Antibiotics alter the balance of intestinal flora and
suppress the immune system. An individual with suppressed immune
function is much more susceptible not only to Candidiasis but to bacterial
infections, which are then treated with antibiotics, which, in turn, increase
the growth of Candida, and so on."

Important Note: Very few people realise that in addition to the standard
antibiotics dished out to us by our doctors so liberally, we are also exposed
to antibiotics and other drugs in the meats and animal products we
consume.

Drs Dennis Remington, M.D., and Barbara Higa Swasey, R.D., authors
of Back to Health says: “Antibiotics and steroids are fed to livestock in
large quantities to prevent infection and stimulate growth. If you eat a lot of
meat that contains even traces of antibiotics, you may develop a bacteria-
yeast imbalance in your intestines."
Continuous use of antibiotics is believed to be:
1. The most important factor in the development of chronic Candidiasis
2. Responsible for increased risk of developing complications, such as
overgrowth of Candida albicans and other organisms
3. Responsible for increased risk developing a bacterial infection that is
resistant to antibiotics
4. The cause of Crohn's disease and leaky gut syndrome or at least
responsible to aggravate those conditions

Diet and Candidiasis

Well-known foods that promote Candidiasis are those that contain sugar
molds and/or yeasts, such as:
· Commercially prepared breads and rolls, pastries, and doughnuts
(which contain sugar which are converted into simple sugars
(monosaccharides) in the body). Remember sugar is the food of choice
for yeast. These substances, and not yeast, may be responsible for the
Candida overgrowth.
· Cheeses, dried fruits, and peanuts.

· Although milk and dairy products carry traces of antibiotics and should
be avoided it also contains lactose, a type of sugar that promotes
Candida growth.

The standard western diet contains high amounts of refined carbohydrates

and sugar in breads, pasta, pastries, potato chips, desserts, candy, sodas, and
junk foods which provide plenty of sugars in the body that support the
growth of Candida.
Dr. Susser says, when sugar is eaten, intestinal fermentation creates a toxin
called acetaldehyde, which affects all of the body's physiological functions,
including digestion and hormonal processes.

Note: Yeast thrives on sugar; therefore a high-sugar diet is one of the

predisposing factors for Candidiasis.

Alcohol and Candidiasis

Dr. Susser says that alcohol suppresses the immune system, disturbs the
whole adrenal hormone axis, and "you can say empirically that it makes
anyone with Candida worse." Therefore Candidiasis sufferers should stay
away from all alcohol, since it is composed of fermented and refined
sugars. It is also more toxic than sugar and also feeds the yeast.

In some Candidiasis sufferers the effect is so severe that they will feel, and
appear to be, intoxicated. In fact a very curious symptom of certain people
with severe Candidiasis is the presence of alcohol in the bloodstream even
when none has been consumed.
The Japanese call it the "drunk disease," because strains of Candida
albicans turn acetaldehyde (the chemical created by sugar and yeast
fermentation) into ethanol having the effect that the patients whose yeast
turns sugar into alcohol are chronically drunk!

In a study of 213 alcoholics at a recovery center in Minneapolis another

connection between alcohol and Candidiasis was found. Results indicated
that Candidiasis is a common complication of alcoholism due to the
combination of high sugar content in alcohol and the inability of alcoholics
to assimilate nutrients. Furthermore, female alcoholics with Candidiasis
were significantly sicker than non-alcoholic women with Candidiasis.

Many of the symptoms exhibited in alcoholism, such as insomnia,

depression, loss of libido, headaches, sinusitis/postnasal drip, and intestinal
complaints, overlap with those in Candida overgrowth. Obviously, drinking
alcohol increases levels of sugar in the system. But other habits of
alcoholics are also at fault. Many alcoholics tend to be smokers, for
instance, and so are at risk for respiratory infections, which are treated with
antibiotics.

Environmental Factors
Exposure to environmental pollutants, such as pesticide residues, car
exhaust, industrial chemicals, and heavy metals (particularly from mercury
amalgam fillings), may foster the growth of Candida as well.

Also damp environments, like musty or moldy basements, may encourage

yeast growth. Regions with rainy climates tend to have a higher incidence
of Candidiasis, according to Ann Louise Gittleman, M.S., of Bozeman,
Montana, author of Supernutrition for Women.

Candidiasis and Parasites

Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., reports that the presence of parasites in patients
can make Candidiasis very difficult to treat and that parasite infestation
encourages yeast overgrowth.

When treatment results for Candidiasis are poor, Dr. Chaitow recommends
testing for coincidental parasitic infection. Before treatment for Candidiasis,
all parasites must first be successfully eradicated.

Researchers believe that Candidiasis can become resistant to treatment

because of parasites such as Giardia lamblia, amoebas, nematodes, and
cestodes.' Parasites can be identified by means of blood, urine, and fecal
testing, as well as electroacupuncture biofeedback.

According to Dr. Chaitow, electroacupuncture biofeedback is also useful

for revealing how well the body will tolerate any medications that may be
prescribed.

To get rid of parasites, Dr. Chaitow advises pursuing a comprehensive

herbal medicine approach rather than medication. "In many cases, anti-
parasitic prescription drugs have not proved to be lastingly effective," he
points out. "They may diminish symptoms for one or two months, but the
symptoms later return with full force." Parasites can be fought with high-
dosage probiotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacteria, and L.
bulgaricus.

Treatment may last from eight to 12 weeks. Dr. Chaitow reports an 80%
success rate in cases of seriously ill people afflicted with parasites and yeast
overgrowth using this method.

Chapter 3 - Symptoms of Candidiasis
A Wide Range of Symptoms
Candidiasis causes systemic illnesses that produce a wide variety of
symptoms. This makes Candidiasis difficult to diagnose accurately, since it
shares symptoms with so many other conditions.

Dr. Chaitow notes that when symptoms are chronic rather than acute or
sudden, he generally suspects a yeast infection. Another clue is if specific
symptoms have been previously treated without success, then the diagnosis
usually suggests Candidiasis.

Therefore it is evident that symptoms are varied and the condition can cause
a number of diseases, ranging from allergies, vaginitis, and thrush (a
whitish fungus in the mouth or vagina) to an invasion of the genitourinary
tract, eyes, liver, heart, or central nervous system and many others.

The most negative and serious conditions caused by Candidiasis are

autoimmune diseases, such as cancer, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis as
well as ADD, ADHD, Addison's disease and AIDS.

According to Dr. Braly, other symptoms of Candidiasis include digestive

problems such as bloating, cramping, gas, and diarrhea, respiratory

What is Your Total Score Out of 32?
In the next chapter we will have a closer look at the symptoms and the
weight that should be attached to each symptom in order to establish if a
person is suffering from Candidiasis and what parts of the body have been
affected.

Endometriosis and Candidiasis

Dr Deborah Metzger, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of Helena Women's
Health in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California found in her practice that
endometriosis patients are allergic to their own hormones

Dr. Metzger treats them with a neutralization method of immunotherapy, in

which drops of a specially prepared, diluted form of the hormones are taken
by mouth.

Also, since about half of the women with endometriosis whom she treats
also have an overgrowth of the common fungus Candida albicans, she
might prescribe the antifungal treatments.

She says that she regularly successfully treats women with "untreatable"
endometriosis by using an alternative approach.

Endometriosis, she believes, is caused by an allergy to your own hormones

and the allergy-stressed immune system often permits an internal
overgrowth of the common fungus Candida albicans.

"With treatment for the allergy and the fungus, my patients with
endometriosis become like new people," she says. "They get relief from
many of their chronic symptoms, like fatigue and depression, and they have
new energy and new zest for life."

Dr. Metzger says that there are many things that a woman can do on her
own to strengthen her immune system, thereby reducing symptoms and
speeding the healing of endometriosis.

A Quick Summary
Below is a quick summary of what we have learned so far.
1. We all have Candida in our bodies we need to keep it from getting out
of control.
2. Women are more vulnerable to the condition than men (women are 8
times more likely to get Candidiasis than men).
3. Prolonged use of antibiotics is most probably the most important factor
in the development of chronic Candidiasis.
4. A depressed immune system is responsible for recurrent or chronic
infections, including chronic Candidiasis.
5. Therefore restoring proper immune function is one of the key goals in
the treatment of chronic Candidiasis.
6. Candidiasis presents a wide range of symptoms and is not easy to
diagnose with normal blood tests.
7. An all-inclusive and holistic approach is the most efficient way to treat
chronic Candidiasis and is much better than simply trying to kill the
Candida with a single drug or a natural anti-Candida agent.
Chapter 4 - Testing and Diagnosis
By now it should be evident that the diagnosis of Candidiasis is not an easy
task. There are a number of symptoms and most of those symptoms overlap
with or are the same for other conditions.

Conventional Blood Tests Not Reliable

Furthermore blood tests used by conventional medicine are not at all
effective or sensitive enough. This is mainly due to the fact that those tests
are looking for Candida antibodies but everybody has Candida and the tests
will not show who has an overgrowth of Candida and who not, in other
words the tests may show antibodies even if the patient is not suffering
from Candidiasis!

The truth is there is no single diagnostic test. Dr Stephen Langer, M.D

says:
"The clincher to any diagnosis is not so much what is happening in the
laboratory as what is happening in the patient. The combination of an
individual's complete medical history and examination, the patient's
response to treatment, and information culled from laboratory tests is the
key to a correct diagnosis."

Dr. Chaitow says:

“The likely Candidate for Candida overgrowth is someone whose medical
history includes steroid hormone medications (cortisone or corticosteroids,
often prescribed for skin conditions such as rashes, eczema, or psoriasis),
prolonged or repeated use of antibiotics, medications for treating ulcers, or
oral contraceptives”.
He adds that certain illnesses, such as diabetes, cancer, and AIDS, can also
increase susceptibility to Candida overgrowth.

Usually a qualified practitioner should ask you about your entire medical
history and will ask you at least the questions noted below. The more
questions that you answer affirmatively, the greater your risk of suffering
from Candidiasis:
1. Have you taken repeated courses of antibiotics or steroids (e.g.,
cortisone)?
2. Have you used birth-control pills?
3. Have you had repeated fungal infections ("jock itch," athlete's foot,
ringworm)?
4. Do you regularly have any of these symptoms bloating, headaches,
depression, fatigue, memory problems, impotence or lack of interest in
sex, muscle aches with no apparent cause, brain fogginess?
5. Do you experience symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome)?
6. Do you have cravings for sweets, products containing white flour, or
alcoholic beverages?
7. Do you repeatedly experience any of the following health difficulties -
inappropriate drowsiness, mood swings, rashes, bad breath, dry mouth,
post-nasal drip or nasal congestion, heartburn, urinary frequency or
urgency?

Other Tests
Blood Tests
As described before blood tests are used to find Candida antibodies because
when Candida takes on its fungal form, the immune system responds by
producing special antibodies to fight off the infection. A large concentration
of these antibodies in the blood is an indication of a Candidiasis outbreak.
Dr. Langer notes that "if the yeast antibodies are elevated and the test is
positive, the yeast infection is active and threatening'"

However, be aware, as noted earlier, the antibody test may be misleading,

because most individuals have Candida organisms in their bodies.

Darkfield Microscopy
Darkfield microscopy is a way of studying living whole blood cells under a
specially adapted microscope that projects the image (magnified 1,400
times) onto a video screen.

A skilled physician can detect early signs of illness in the form of

microorganisms in the blood known to produce disease. Darkfield
microscopy reveals distortions of red blood cells (which indicate nutritional
status), possible undesirable bacterial or fungal life forms (like Candida),
and other blood ecology patterns indicative of health or illness.

Stool Analysis
Another test that can be used is to conduct a stool analysis to diagnose
Candidiasis through a laboratory examination of a stool sample. If the stool
contains abnormally large amounts of Candida, this may indicate
Candidiasis. The stool analysis can also look at levels of beneficial bacteria
in the intestines as well as other digestive markers for determining Candida
levels.

Electrodermal Screening
EDS works by placing a blunt, non-invasive electric probe at specific points
on the patient's hands, face, or feet, corresponding to acupuncture points at
the beginning or end of energy meridians. The electrodes are connected to a
computer the trained practitioner conducts an "interview" with the patient's
organs and tissues, gathering information about the basic functional status
of those systems.

Minute electrical discharges from these points serve as information signals

about the condition of the body's organs and systems, useful for the
physician in diagnostic evaluation and developing a treatment plan.

The Spit Test

You will find a lot of information on the internet about this test. I will give
you few links to sites where it is discussed shortly.

However please be aware that this test has not been scientifically proven as
far as we could establish. All professionals still prefer the diagnosis of
Candidiasis by looking at your symptoms and regard the questionnaire by
Dr. Crook in his book "The Yeast Syndrome” as the best and most accurate
test.

Having said that here is the test:

1. First thing when you wake up in the morning don’t put anything in your
mouth, put water in a clear glass that you can see through. It is
recommended that you don't use tap water but use bottled water in stead.
2. Collect saliva in your mouth with your tongue and spit it into the glass.
3. Come back after 15 minutes and have a look in the glass leave it there
for an hour and come and look at it every 15 minutes or so, looking for
the symptoms described below.

If you see any of the following, then it indicates the presence of

Candidiasis:
1. Your saliva stays at the top and you see thin strands that look like
strings or spider legs extending downward.
2. Your saliva floats to the bottom and looks cloudy.
3. Your saliva is suspended in mid-air and looks like little specs are
floating.
See the picture below for guidance.

If there are no strings and the saliva is still floating after at least one hour,
you probably have Candida under control, and have nothing to worry
about.
But as we said before the best way is to go by your symptoms and complete
the questionnaire and then talk to a medical professional about it.

Here is a video about the test.

Chapter 5 - The 5 Step Treatment Plan
In the rest of this book we will detail our comprehensive 5-step approach to
the successful elimination of chronic Candidiasis through natural treatment
options.

If you follow these easy steps it should take care of chronic Candidiasis
and if that does not work then chronic Candidiasis might not be the
problem or underlying factor of your illness.

A Comprehensive Approach is Best

Candidiasis is best treated with a comprehensive approach rather than
simply trying to kill the Candida with a prescription drug or a natural
antiCandida agent.

Conventional doctors usually treat Candidiasis by simply prescribing

antifungal drugs such as Nystatin, Ketoconazol, and Diflucan". However it
is recommended that these drugs should only be used as a last resort rather
than a first line of defence.

Dr Michael Murray, N.D., of Issaquah, Washington, author of Chronic

Candidiasis: The Yeast Syndrome, says "A comprehensive approach is more
effective in treating chronic Candidiasis than simply trying to kill the
Candida with a drug or natural anti-Candida agent."

Conventional over the counter and prescription drugs i.e. Nystatin,

Ketoconazol, and Diflucan, and many of the natural antiCandida agents
usually do not produce noteworthy long-term results. The main reason for
this is that those drugs fail to address the underlying factors that promoted
Candida overgrowth in the first place.

Taking one or more of those drugs or agents is kind of like just cutting the
weed in your garden instead of pulling them out by the roots.

The first step in the successful treatment of Candidiasis is the reduction of

factors that predispose a patient to Candida overgrowth. Once the
predisposing factors have been eliminated it is necessary to address immune
function, diet, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, and others.

DRUGS AND CANDIDIASIS

The use of drugs to treat Candidiasis is the accepted practice in the medical
community. These drugs can be exorbitantly expensive and toxic, with
dangerous side effects.

Virender Sodhi, M.D. (Ayurveda), N.D., of Bellevue, Washington, points

out that the most popular of these drugs, nystatin, cannot rid the body of
Candida, because of Candida's ability to mutate when under attack. Dr.
Sodhi formerly used nystatin with patients but found that, even after a year
of using it, he was not getting results. According to Dr. Sodhi, nystatin
causes Candida to mutate into another species of yeast, therefore treatment
can continue for long periods and still have little effect. Meanwhile, Dr.
Sodhi claims, nystatin lingers in the intestines and kills other potentially
helpful organisms.

Note: There is No Quick Fix
Recovery from chronic Candidiasis usually takes between 3 and 6 months
and in severe cases it can even take longer to recover completely. There is
no quick fix forget about the stuff you see on the internet that Candidiasis
can be cured in 12 hours!

Studies have shown that it is important to get bowel Candida under control
first and until this has happened you can expect local manifestations to
continue (such as vaginal thrush). Therefore local treatment alone (for
thrush or other symptoms) is not enough.

A Quick Overview Of The 5 Step Treatment Plan

Following is a summary of the 4 steps to the successful elimination of
chronic Candidiasis which we will discuss in more detail.
Step 1: Finding and Addressing the Predisposing Factors
Step 2: Boost Your Immune Function
Step 3: Detoxification and Elimination
Step 4: Follow the Candida-Control and Elimination Diet
Step 5: Follow the Nutritional Support Guidelines

These simple steps should take care of chronic Candidiasis in most cases. If
you follow these guidelines and don't have significant improvement or
complete resolution, further evaluation is necessary to determine if chronic
Candidiasis is the underlying factor.

Repeat stool cultures and antigen level tests are often helpful in this goal. If
the organism has not been eradicated, stronger prescription antibiotics can
be used along with the other general recommendations.
Step 1: Finding and Addressing the Predisposing
Factors
The list below is the first place to look when you want to find the
predisposing factors.
1. Use of Antibiotics, Corticosteroids and drugs that suppress the immune
system
2. Use of Sugar, Alcohol, and Refined Carbohydrates in diets
3. Existence of Food Allergies (gluten, yeast, mold, meat and dairy)
4. Nutrient Deficiency
5. Stress, Anxiety and Depression
6. Lifestyle

Antibiotics and Corticosteroids

Eliminate the use of antibiotics, steroids, immune-suppressing drugs, and
birth control pills (unless there is an absolute medical necessity).

Dr Lani Lopez of New Zealand says:

· If necessary, reduce or avoid the following drugs: anti-ulcer drugs,
corticosteroids, oral contraceptives, oestrogen replacement therapy and
antibiotics.
· Also avoid chemicals (including bubble baths, deodorant, tampons or
pads and scented toilet paper) contacting Candida-affected areas. Buy
organic cotton pads and tampons.
· Avoid smoking and use of recreational drugs.
Sugar, Alcohol and Refined Carbohydrates
Dr. Leyardia Black, N.D., of Lopez Island,Washington, says, "In treating
Candida, my basic dietary taboos are sweets, alcohol, and refined
carbohydrates.

Sugar is the main food of the Candida albicans bacteria therefore restriction
of sugar intake is an absolute necessity in the treatment of chronic
Candidiasis.

Most people do well by simply avoiding sugar in all its forms, which
include; sucrose, dextrose, fructose, fruit juices, honey, maple syrup,
molasses, milk products (which contain lactose), most fruit (except berries),
and potatoes (whose starch converts into sugar).

Dr Lopez: Until the Candida is under control, avoid sugary foods, yeast,
foods made with yeast and sugar, and fermented foods or beverages (this
includes beer, wine, alcohol, cheeses, peanuts, mushrooms, lollies,
chocolate, cakes, etc., breads, fizzy drinks, eating too much fruit or
fermented soy, etc., beetroot, Marrnite, Vegernite, Promite, honey; maple
syrup, etc.). Avoid fresh and dried fruit and juices because of fructose sugar
content - these foods feed thrush. Take the herb gymnema and/or the
mineral chromium to reduce sugar cravings.

Food Allergies – Gluten, Yeast, Mold, Meat and Dairy

It has been found that many Candidiasis sufferers also have allergies and
sensitivities to various foods. It is generally recommended by many experts
that individuals with chronic Candidiasis avoid foods with a high content of
yeast or mold, including alcoholic beverages, cheeses, dried fruits, and
peanuts. Even though many patients with chronic Candidiasis may be able
to tolerate these foods, it is still a good idea to eliminate them from the diet.
At the very least, they should be avoided until the situation is under control.

Dr Lopez: Identify and eliminate food sensitivities. The most common are
wheat, gluten, citrus and dairy foods.

Gluten: Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats and it has
and adverse effect on 50-70% of all people. In such cases the gluten attacks
the lining of the small intestine allowing all sorts of nasty toxins to enter the
bloodstream and can cause a variety of symptoms, which include diarrhea
(probably the most major symptom), anaemia (from poor iron absorption),
along with low Vitamin B12 absorption, weight loss (that may sound good
for some, but in this disease it's not), bloating, abdominal pain, vomiting,
fatigue and breathlessness. In most people the symptoms are not severe and
are limited mostly to a feeling of tiredness after consuming gluten
containing food.

For Candidiasis sufferers it is very important to find out if they are allergic
to gluten. The easiest way to find out is to eliminate gluten containing foods
from the diet for a few weeks and note if there is any improvement in
energy levels or any of the symptoms noted above.

Yeast: Although the yeast in foods such as bread, baked goods, alcohol and
vinegar is not the same yeast as Candida it has been proven that there are
very often a cross-reaction between food yeast and Candida yeast. As a
result, foods containing or promoting yeast, should be avoided until
possible sensitivities are clearly diagnosed.
To test patients who are very sensitive to yeast, Dr. Black takes them off all
yeast-containing foods for a week. Then she adds such foods back one at a
time. If the symptoms reappear, then clearly yeast-containing foods should
be avoided.

Dr James Braly, M.D., of Hollywood, Florida uses a rotation diet to find

the culprits. His patients are asked to avoid suspected allergenic foods for 3
to 6 months and the reintroduce them into the diet to see if symptoms are
provoked.

Mold: Dr Murray Susser, M.D., of Santa Monica, California says that

molds are another aspect of Candida sensitivity. These include food molds
(found in cheeses, grapes, mushrooms, and fermented foods) and
environmental molds (found in wet climates, in damp basements and plants,
and outdoors). Molds and yeast can also exchange forms. Therefore, the
ingestible molds of cheeses and fermented foods should be avoided.
Avoiding food yeast and mold does not attack the Candida yeast itself, but
is an attempt to ease stress on the immune system caused by substances that
can trigger allergies.

He says: "Even so, food yeast and mold avoidance should be considered
case by case for each individual as it may not always be necessary. My
personal opinion is that most anti-Candida diets are too strict. It is
unnecessary to take Candida patients off of vinegar and mushrooms unless
they are allergic to these things."
Meat and Dairy: It is also important to note that Candida overgrowth can
also occur with the consumption of meat, dairy, and poultry products due to
the heavy use of antibiotics in the raising of those animals, for instance
traces of antibiotics given to dairy cows can later show up in milk.

There are several very good reasons to eliminate the consumption of milk
when you suffer from chronic Candidiasis:
· Milk's high lactose content promotes the overgrowth of Candida
· Milk is one of the most common food allergens
· Milk may contain trace levels of antibiotics, which can further disrupt
the gastrointestinal bacterial flora and promote Candida overgrowth

Dr Lopez: Avoid milk and milk products due to lactose content, possible
food sensitivity and antibiotic content. Dairy products may increase yeast
growth due to antibiotic content and high lactose (milk sugar) content. The
exception to this is unsweetened, unflavoured, non-processed (organic, if
possible) yoghurt.

Meat eaters should make sure that meat is free of antibiotic contamination
wherever possible organic (hormone- and antibiotic-free) meat and poultry
should be consumed. For Candidiasis patients, seafood (free of mercury
toxins) and vegetable protein are preferable, since they are not only
antibiotic-free, but lower in fat.

Nutrient Deficiency
Dr Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., of London, England says that in most cases
of Candidiasis patients have immune and digestive issues which may have
become severely depleted or compromised after months or years of chronic
Candidiasis due to severe nutrient deficiency.

Dr. Chaitow says that a general nutritional support program is frequently

needed to help build efficiency again. The main deficiencies are usually B
Vitamins (which increase antibody response and are used in nearly every
body activity), vitamin C (which stimulates the adrenal glands and is
essential to immune processes), vitamin E (the lack of which depresses
immune response), vitamin A (builds resistance to infection and increases
immune response), and beta carotene (a vitamin A precursor that increases
T cells).
Furthermore antioxidant immune-boosters, such as selenium, calcium, and
zinc, are also useful in combating Candidiasis. Additional adrenal gland
stimulants include chromium, magnesium, and glandular adrenal extract.
Essential fatty acids (such as evening primrose oil) may be considered as
well.

Stress
Stress is also one of the major predisposing factors that need to be
addressed. It is a well-known fact that stress is one of major culprits for
Candidiasis in men. However and unfortunately reducing and/or eliminating
stress is also in many cases one of the most difficult issues to address.

Unlike taking supplements and/or eating differently people are required to

make major life style changes to learn how to deal with stress by using
positive coping techniques exercise and relaxing.

However it remains very important to address the issue of stress not just for
the sake of curing Candidiasis but also for overall health and wellbeing.
Lifestyle Hints – A Few Final Tips
Dr Lani Lopez also recommends the following lifestyle changes and
considerations:
1. Wear loose 100% pure cotton underwear. Avoid nylon and tight
pantyhose. Sterilise all underwear and towels that have contacted fungal
areas after each use in extremely hot water and Dettol or Napisan to
avoid cross-contamination.
2. Speaking of cross-contamination, it is likely that any sexual partners
who have come into contact with Candida will have an overgrowth too,
especially men who are prone to athlete's foot. This is common, and
partners may carry fungal infections that are not symptomatic for many
years. If you or your partner has athlete's foot, apply echinacea herbal
liquid tincture to the fungal areas 2 times daily, but not on broken skin.
Apply tea tree oil twice daily (may be added to shampoo and conditioner
for dandruff). Dilute with water if too strong. Dry skin and toes properly
twice a day and you may also paint iodine onto the fungal area. Always
use a towel cleaned with bleach (old ones are good), do not let it get wet
and musty smelling, use a fresh one daily and never let anyone else use
it.
3. Avoid sexual intercourse while symptoms persist. Condoms will not
give much protection, due to infected fluids around the pubic area, which
may irritate the vaginal area. However, if you do have sex, wash and dry
thoroughly after intercourse. Wipe toilet paper from front to back after
elimination and thoroughly dry the vaginal area after bathing or
swimming, possibly with a blow dryer on a low setting, to avoid warm,
moist breeding grounds for external Candida.
Warning
It is imperative that you do not embark on your own treatment
regimen without the help and advice of a knowledgeable medical
professional. The information in this book is intended to give you an
overview of the various substances that are useful in curing
Candidiasis.

It is definitely not recommended that you take all of it!

You MUST do this with the help of and under the supervision of a
professional. Some of these substances might interfere with other
medications and might have severe adverse effects on you if
administered in the wrong doses or in combination with other
medication.

Step 2: Boost Your Immune Function

The importance of a healthy immune function, to protect against Candida
overgrowth, is well known by any physician who has seen a patient
suffering from AIDS or taking drugs that suppress the immune system. In
either case, severe overgrowth of Candida albicans is a hallmark feature.
The occurrence of Candida overgrowth in these conditions provides
considerable evidence that attaining better immune function is essential for
the patient with chronic Candidiasis.

Candidiasis Causes a Depressed Immune Function

Usually chronic Candidiasis sufferers are stuck in a vicious cycle. Chronic
infections of Candidiasis are characterized by a depressed immune system.
A compromised immune system leads to infection, and infection leads to
damage to the immune system, further weakening resistance.
How it happens is that a triggering event like the use of antibiotics or
nutrient deficiencies can lead to immune system inhibition, which then
allows Candida to overgrow and become well-established in the lining of
the gastrointestinal tract. Once the organism attaches itself to the intestinal
cells, it competes with the cell and ultimately the entire body for nutrition,
potentially robbing the body of vital nutrients.

The Candida also produces a large number of toxins and antigens

(compounds that the body recognizes as foreign and develops antibodies
to). Scientists have identified more than 70 distinct antigens caused by
Candida.

As a result of this tremendous number of antigens the immune system is

becoming so busy directing its resources to the fight against the Candida
albicans that it cannot look after the rest of the body.

Restoring Immunity is Crucial

Restoring proper immune function must be one of the key goals in the
treatment of chronic Candidiasis. There is no magic silver bullet that can
immediately restore immune function in patients with chronic Candidiasis.
Instead, a comprehensive approach involving lifestyle changes, stress
management, exercise, diet, nutritional supplementation, glandular therapy,
and plant-based medicines is used.

It has been proven that one the most effective ways to reestablish the
immune system is to improve thymus function. You can read more about
the thymus here [Link]

Promoting optimal thymus gland activity involves ensuring adequate

dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C, vitamin
E, zinc, and selenium as well as the use of products that contain
concentrates of calf thymus tissue.
Step 3: Detoxification and Elimination
Candida sufferers usually show multiple signs of chemical sensitivities and
allergies, which is an indication that the body’s natural ability to detoxify
has been impaired. The main organ in the body responsible for
detoxification is the liver. Therefore, the liver function of the Candida
patient needs to be supported.

In fact many therapists believe that improving the health of the liver and
promoting detoxification may be one of the most critical success factors in
the treatment of Candidiasis.

Damage to the liver is very often the cause of chronic Candidiasis as well as
chronic fatigue. When the liver is even slightly damaged by a toxic
chemical the immune function is severely compromised.

The immune-system-suppressing effect of liver damage has been repeatedly

demonstrated in experimental animal studies and human studies. For
example, when the liver of a rat is damaged by a toxic chemical, immune
function is severely hindered. Liver injury is also linked to Candida
overgrowth, as evident in studies of mice, demonstrating that when the liver
is even slightly damaged, Candida runs rampant through the body.
Factors That Might Indicate a Need for Detoxification
Below are some factors that should be considered to make a decision
whether detoxification is required or not.
1. More than twenty pounds overweight
2. History of heavy alcohol use
3. Diabetes, Psoriasis, Gallstones, History of viral hepatitis
4. Natural and synthetic steroid hormone use such as anabolic steroids,
estrogens and oral contraceptives
5. High exposure to certain chemicals or drugs such as Cleaning solvents,
Pesticides, Antibiotics, Diuretics, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
and Thyroid hormone
The following regimen can help to detoxify the body:
1. Follow a diet based on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
legumes, nuts, and seeds
2. Regular exercise and avoidance of alcohol
3. Take a high-potency multiple-vitamin and mineral supplement
4. Daily intake of milk thistle (silymarin see details below) to protect the
liver and enhance liver function
5. A three-day fast at the change of each season

Promoting Elimination
In addition to directly supporting liver function, proper detoxification
involves promoting proper elimination.
By elimination I mean bowel movement. A diet that focuses on high-fiber
plant foods should be sufficient to promote proper elimination/ bowel
movement.
If necessary fiber formulas can be taken but it is important that these
formulas are composed of natural plant fibers derived from psyllium seed,
kelp, agar, pectin, and plant gums such as karaya and guar. Fiber formulas
are the laxatives that most closely mimic the natural mechanism that
promotes a bowel movement.
In the treatment of Candidiasis, 3 to 5 grams of soluble fiber are
recommended at bedtime, especially if anti-Candida therapies are
employed, to ensure that dead Candida cells are excreted and not absorbed
back into the bloodstream.

Milk Thistle (Silymarin)

There is a long list of plants that have been proven to have beneficial effects
on the liver functions. However the most impressive results have been
achieved with research on a special extract of milk thistle (Silybum
marianum) known as silymarin. Silymarin refers to a group of flavonoid
compounds (plant pigments with impressive antioxidant effects).

These compounds protect the liver from damage and enhance its
detoxification processes. Silymarin has shown impressive results in
improving liver function and detoxification processes in double-blind
studies. The standard dosage for silymarin is usually 70 to 210 mg three
times daily.

Liver-Cleansing Herbs
Parasite-cleansing herbs help eradicate Candida, accelerate the healing
process and kill microscopic parasites that multiply with Candida
infections.
1. 3g-5g of dried Dandelion Root to support the liver and withstand
Candida toxins.
2. Two 3-week courses of Cloves (1800mg daily) and Wormwood
(2000mg daily)
3. Black Walnut (2000mg daily) to help eradicate parasites.

Bach Flower Remedies

Choose a single remedy or a combination recommended by a health
professional. Take 4 times daily or as recommended to speed up the healing
process and emotional aspects associated with Candida. Add Crab Apple to
aid cleansing.

Hormone Balancing
See a naturopath for more advice if you have ongoing, chronic Candida or
if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
1. The herb, Chaste Tree can be used internally to balance hormones by
women who have thrush triggered by their menstrual cycle. Take 750mg
2 times daily.
2. Take a Vitamin B complex as directed with Ginseng (600mg-1,000mg
daily),
3. Take Liquorice (2g-4g daily) and Passionflower (4g-8g daily) to help
adrenal stress.

Increasing Digestive Secretions

In many cases, an important step in treating chronic Candidiasis is
improving digestive secretions. Gastric hydrochloric acid, pancreatic
enzymes, and bile all inhibit the overgrowth of Candida and prevent its
penetration into the absorptive surfaces of the small intestine. Decreased
secretion of any of these important digestive components can lead to
overgrowth of Candida albicans in the gastrointestinal tract.
Therefore, restoration of normal digestive secretions through the use of
supplemental hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes, and substances that
promote bile flow is critical in the treatment of chronic Candidiasis.

Patients on anti-ulcer drugs such as Tagamet (cimetidine) and Zantac

(ranitidine) actually develop Candida overgrowth in the stomach. This
occurrence highlights the importance of hydrochloric acid in the prevention
of Candida overgrowth. Restoring proper levels of gastric acid by
supplemental hydrochloric acid is often quite useful in chronic Candidiasis.
Pancreatic enzymes can also be useful in the treatment of chronic
Candidiasis. As well as being necessary for protein digestion, the proteases
(enzymes that break down protein) serve several other important functions.
The proteases are largely responsible for keeping the small intestine free
from parasites (including bacteria, yeast, protozoa, and intestinal worms)
.11,12 A lack of proteases or other digestive secretions greatly increases an
individual's risk of having an intestinal infection, including chronic Candida
infections of the gastrointestinal tract.
Step 4: Follow the Candida-Control and Elimination
Diet
Out With The Garbage
Dr. Deborah Metzger, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of Helena Women's
Health in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California says: "Getting away from
the garbage can make a very big difference in reducing the severity of the
disease."
Diets full of processed foods are loaded with unnatural additives and
preservatives that "poison" the body and worsen the symptoms of
Candidiasis.

Dr Susan Lark, M.D., a physician in Los Altos, California call it the "high-
stress" foods and says patients should also minimize their intake of
commercial salad dressings, ketchup, soft drinks, coffee, and alcohol, as
well as red meat and dairy products.

Both Dr. Lark and Dr. Metzger agree and put particular emphasis on
eliminating refined carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour.

"Sugar and white flour weaken the immune system and rob the body of
energy,"

A Diet to Rid Yourself of Candida

You can follow the dietary recommendations below to eliminate Candida.
Remember this is not a weight loss effort it is a healthy lifestyle diet which
is designed to help you live a healthy and balanced life and get rid of
Candidiasis.

The following foods should be avoided for at least one month:

1. All foods containing yeast, including bread, biscuits, and cakes
2. All fermented foods, such as vinegar, soy sauce, and pickled foods
3. All forms of sugar and products containing sugar, including sweets and
chocolates, honey, maple syrup, sweetened drinks, and sweetened yogurt
4. Milk and dairy products and all foods containing trans-fats
5. All refined white flour products
6. Alcohol, black tea, and coffee
7. Foods with artificial sweeteners, colourings, preservatives, and
additives

Include the following foods in your diet:

1. Fresh vegetables and salads
2. Whole grains-unlike processed white flour, whole grains (such as rye or
millet) do not produce much sugar in the intestinal tract; as these grains
are digested, they are converted into polysaccharides (long-chain sugar
molecules), which do not stimulate the growth of yeast organisms.
3. Garlic-crushed or finely sliced on salads or vegetables
4. Olive oil-extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil should be the only oil used
5. Fresh fruits-only moderate amounts of fruit should be eaten; eliminate
completely from the diet for the first week due to high sugar content,
then limit to two fruits per day; avoid very sweet varieties and all citrus
fruits

Source: Alternative Medicine – The Definitive Guide Second Edition

Remember that every antifungal treatment for Candidiasis will reduce the
numbers of "friendly" bacteria that inhabit the intestines. In the long run, a
healthy growth of these bacteria in the intestines-particularly L. acidophilus
and B. bifidum is the best defence against yeast infections. See the section
below about the proper use of probiotics for details.

Cabbage is one of the best food sources of friendly bacteria; eat it raw or
juice it daily.
Other foods that can help revitalize the colon and encourage the growth of
normal bacteria include rice protein, chicory; onions, garlic, and asparagus.
B. bifidum is also found in yogurt and kefir (a fermented milk drink).

Kefir is a very healthy and beneficial probiotic jewel. The most

comprehensive information is available on the sites below. You can also
Google the word “kefir”. It will be well worth your while to find out more
about its health benefits and if at all possible to introduce this into your
diet.

Some Final Diet Advice

In order to overcome Candidiasis, sugar must be avoided in all its various
forms.

Include garlic, onions, ginger, culinary herbs and spices (oregano, basil,
parsley, coriander, cinnamon, aniseed and cloves), fresh green leafy
vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and fresh, unprocessed organic
meat in your diet.
Step 5: Follow the Nutritional Support Guidelines
Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs and Enzymes: To Strengthen Immunity
Candida patients have higher vitamin, mineral and supplement requirements
because certain substances help to repair and strengthen the immune system
that in turn helps fight the disease.

Therefore Dr. Chaitow suggests that a general nutritional support program

is frequently needed to help build immune function and digestive efficiency,
which may have become severely depleted or compromised after months or
years of chronic Candidiasis.

When taken in the right doses, the vitamins and minerals will boost the
white blood cells and other components of the immune system.

Below is an overview of recommended supplements. That will be useful to

help you in your fight against Candidiasis.

Taking Vitamins and Minerals

1. Multi vitamin and mineral formula - A high potency multi vitamin
and mineral will help with nutrient deficiencies.
2. Vitamin A - builds resistance to infection and increases immune
response.
3. B Vitamins - increase antibody response and are used in nearly every
activity of the body. Vitamin B complex enhances liver repair and
reduces deficiencies caused by oral contraceptives and oestrogen
therapy. A supplement that supplies at least 50 milligrams a day of the
major B vitamins, such as thiamin and niacin as well as Vitamin B5
(known as Pantothenic acid) 250 mg daily is usually recommended.
4. Vitamin C - stimulates the adrenal glands and is essential to immune
processes. 8 -10 g daily is usually recommended.
5. Vitamin E - the number one immune booster. 400 IU daily is usually
recommended.
6. Antioxidant Immune-boosters - selenium, calcium, and zinc, are also
useful in combating Candidiasis. Zinc chelate 25-50 mg daily is usually
recommended.
7. Adrenal Gland Stimulants – such as chromium, magnesium, and
glandular adrenal extract.

Taking Fibre, Essential Fatty Acids and Enzymes

1. Fibre from Flaxseeds, Psyllium or Slippery Elm - increase dietary
fibre, they will absorb the toxins and aid the balance of beneficial gut
bacteria or microflora. Take 1 tsp-l Tbsp of these fibres, singly or in
combination, with plenty of fluid, daily is usually recommended.
2. Caprylic Acid. A short-chain fatty acid from coconut oil that has an
anti-Candida effect. Dr. Braly use it as his first line of attack on
Candidiasis. In one study, patients taking 3,600 mg of caprylic acid daily
for two weeks completely eliminated their Candida. Since caprylic acid
is readily absorbed into the system. It should be taken in enteric or slow
release (sustained release) form.
3. Digestive enzymes - Lack of stomach acid is linked with Candida. Dr
Lita Lee, Ph.D., an enzyme therapist based in Lowell, Oregon, uses
plant enzyme supplements to treat yeast overgrowth. Many of her
Candidiasis patients come to her after unsuccessfully trying Nystatin,
probiotics, homeopathics, fatty acid supplementation, and various herbs.
"Certain cellulose enzymes will digest the common kinds of yeast,
whereas other yeasts sometimes yield to amylase enzymes," reports Dr.
Lee. She uses a probiotic formula and cellulose enzymes to digest yeast
and re-establish friendly bowel bacteria.
You can improve digestion by taking digestive enzymes, contained in
Papaya (papain) and Pineapple (bromelain). Take as directed or include
copious amounts of papaya and pineapple in your diet.
4. Essential Fatty Acids - such as evening primrose oil may be
considered as well. 6-8 capsules daily are usually recommended.
5. Flaxseed oil (2 Tbsp daily) and Colostrum (4g daily) - May help
reduce leaky gut syndrome and inflammation associated with Candida.
6. Hydrochloric Acid - Dr. Braly also recommends supplementation of
hydrochloric acid (HCl). He notes that aging, alcohol abuse, food
allergies, and nutrient deficiencies create a lack of HCl in the stomach,
which prevents food from being digested and permits Candida
overgrowth. Dr. Braly recommends one capsule of HCl and pepsin at
the start of meals, increasing cautiously to two to four capsules with each
meal if needed.

Taking Herbs
Candidiasis can also be treated very effectively with certain herbs. The
herbs are usually taken in the form of a tea, dried in capsules or tablets, or
taken in suppository form.
Goldenseal Root Extract, Oregano, Grapeseed, and Barberry – all of
them contain berberine which is an alkaloid found in the Berberidis family
and have proven particularly useful as anti-Candida agents in extensive
studies in both experimental and clinical settings for its antibiotic activity.

Berberine fights Candida overgrowth, normalizes intestinal flora, helps

digestive problems, has anti-diarrheal properties, and stimulates the
immune system by increasing blood supply to the spleen. It can be taken as
a tea or in other fluid and dry forms."

Berberine shows a broad range of antibiotic activity, including activity

against bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, particularly Candida albicans.
Diarrhoea is a common symptom in patients with chronic Candidiasis.
Berberine has shown remarkable anti-diarrheal activity in even the most
severe cases.

Berberine and berberine-containing plants are generally nontoxic at the

recommended dosages; however be aware that berberine-containing plants
are not recommended for use during pregnancy, and higher dosages may
interfere with B-vitamin metabolism.

Olives and Castor Beans - Fatty acids derived from olives (oleic acid) and
castor beans (undecylenic acid) have also been proven to be useful. It is a
good idea to use olive oil exclusively in all your cooking.

Garlic – Taking capsules of garlic, which is also antifungal, is very

effective at killing Candida. The active component is allicin the one that
causes the strong smell of garlic and that is what is a particularly effective
antifungal agent. It has been found to be more potent than many other
antifungals, especially against Candida.

Garlic has showed significant antifungal activity. In fact, its inhibition of

Candida albicans in both animal and test tube (-in vitro} studies has shown
it to be more potent than nystatin, gentian violet, and six other reputed
antifungal agents.
The modern clinical use of garlic involves commercial preparations
designed to offer the benefits of garlic without the odour. These
preparations are made in such a way that the allicin is not formed until the
enteric-coated tablet is delivered to the small and large intestine.

Treatment of chronic Candidiasis requires a daily dose of at least 10 mg of

allicin or a total allicin potential of 4,000 mcg. This amount is equal to
approximately one clove (4 grams) of fresh garlic. Going beyond this
dosage with these preparations usually results in the odour of garlic being
detectable.

In cases of vaginal Candidiasis, it can be used as a suppository or douche.

Pau d'arco bark – is extracted from a tropical tree native to Brazil and has
long been used to treat infections, intestinal complaints, and genitourinary
ailments (cystitis, prostatitis). It is reported to have wonderful antiviral and
antifungal properties. But be aware that many products claiming to contain
pau d'arco have only trace amounts, or even none, of the herb. These
products also may use a part of the tree other than the bark, or may have
been damaged in production and shipping. So whenever buying products
with pau d'arco, make sure that it contains lapachol, which is the organic
compound known for its antibiotic action.
Grapefruit Seed Extract - works as a multipurpose natural antibiotic for
bacterial and viral problems in the intestines, against Candida infections,
and as a vaginal douche.

Grape Seed Extract - This is a very potent antifungal that can help kill
Candida, says Dr. Metzger. But it is so potent, she cautions people not to
use more than is recommended on the label. Usually it is recommended to
continue treatment with capsules for 3 - 6 months.

Enteric-Coated Volatile Oils - have been called the new wave natural
antiCandida formulas. Volatile oils from oregano, thyme, peppermint, and
rosemary are all effective antifungal agents. A recent study compared the
antiCandida effect of oregano oil to that of caprylic acid. The results
indicated that oregano oil is over 100 times more potent than caprylic acid
against Candida. Since the volatile oils are quickly absorbed and associated
with inducing heartburn, enteric-coating is recommended to ensure delivery
to the small and large intestine.

An effective dosage for an enteric-coated volatile oil preparation is usually

0.2 to 0.4 ml twice daily between meals.

Other Useful Herbs – include Olive Leaf extract (270mg 3 times daily),
Glucan (400mg 2 times daily), Astragalus German chamomile, aloe vera,
ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, licorice, oil of oregano, thyme oil, and tea tree
oil, fennel, anise, ginseng, alfalfa, and red clover all of which are proven to
be very effective in the treatment of Candidiasis.

Herbs Summary
There are a number of natural agents with proven activity against Candida
albicans. Rather than relying on these agents as a primary therapy, however,
it is still important to address the factors that predispose you to chronic
Candidiasis.

The four natural agents mostly recommended to treat Candidiasis are:

· Caprylic acid
· Berberine-containing plants
· Garlic
· Enteric-coated volatile oil preparations

Correct Use of Probiotics

The flora (bacteria) in our bodies play a major role in our overall health and
nutritional status as it affects our immune system function, cholesterol
metabolism and aging.

It has been shown that the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus (commonly

known as acidophilus) and Bactobacillus bifidum (commonly known as
bifidus) can be used to promote overall good health in the human body.
These bacteria commonly found in yogurt are usually referred to as
probiotics.
A deficiency of acidophilus and bifidus almost always leads to Candida
overgrowth. Therefore it is so important to restore the balance by
supplementing the intake of these healthy bacteria known as probiotics.

There are several specific uses for probiotics, however the four primary
areas of use related to chronic Candidiasis are:
1. Promotion of proper intestinal environment
2. Post antibiotic therapy
3. Vaginal yeast infections
4. Urinary tract infections

Dr. Metzger says: “A probiotic supplement containing the "friendly"

intestinal bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum
can help limit the growth of Candida”. Look for a refrigerated supplement
containing both bacteria and follow the dosage recommendations on the
label.

The dosage of probiotic supplements are based upon the number of live
organisms it contains. The ingestion of 1 to 10 billion viable acidophilus
and bifidus cells daily is a sufficient dosage for most people. Amounts
exceeding this may induce mild gastrointestinal disturbances, while smaller
amounts may not be able to colonize the gastrointestinal tract.

Note: Some people get increased bloating from probiotics so it is

recommended that you start with low doses and increase gradually to 10
billion.

Treating Thrush with Probiotics: Dr Lani Lopez says you can insert 2
capsules into the vagina to help combat thrush. Remember to thoroughly
wash and dry your hands before and after inserting the capsules.

How to Make Your Own Yoghurt

Dr Lani Lopez provides the following recipe to make your own yoghurt.
1. 1 large jar
a. 1 tea-towel or muslin cloth to cover
b. a rubber band
c. natural unflavoured yoghurt with acidophilus
2. Full cream milk (organic if possible)
3. Heat 1 pint of organic milk until it rises (don't let it boil or it won't work
very well), then take it off the heat and cool to a lukewarm temperature.
4. Get the large jar and pour in enough of the natural yoghurt to cover 1/4
of the jar.
5. Pour the lukewarm milk on top to fill the jar.
6. Cover tile jar rim with the clean tea towel or muslin cloth and secure
with the rubber band.
7. Put into the hot water cupboard on top of the cylinder overnight.
8. The next morning, put in the fridge. It's now ready to eat.

Important Note About Yogurt

You will find that on the internet and in many books numerous people
promote and advocate the use of yogurt. However before you start using
yoghurt please first consider what Dr Susser says below. He is referring to
commercial sweetened yogurt which we find in the supermarkets and not to
healthy unsweetened, unflavoured, non-processed organic yoghurt..

”Patients should avoid yogurt because of its sugar content, despite its high
concentration of Lactobacilli, which suppress "bad" bacteria and keep
other organisms under control. Freeze-dried acidophilus supplements in
capsule form are more effective in combating bacteria than yogurt.
Chapter 6 - Other Treatment Options To Cure
Candidiasis
The following treatment options are less well known but have also proven
to be very effective at treating Candidiasis successfully.

Oxygen Therapy and Candidiasis

Oxygen therapy refers to a wide range of therapies, utilizing oxygen in
various forms, to promote healing and destroy disease-producing
microorganisms and toxins in the body.

One form of oxygen therapy uses hydrogen peroxide (H202). Oxidation (a

chemical reaction occurring when electrons are transferred from one
molecule to another) administered through hydrogen peroxide therapy
regulates tissue repair, cellular respiration, immune functions, and the
production of cytokines (chemical messengers that are involved in the
regulation of almost every system in the body).

Hydrogen peroxide therapy can also work as a defense system, directly

destroying invading bacteria, viruses, yeast, and parasites, according to the
late Charles H. Farr, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Farr treated hundreds of patients with chronic systemic Candida using
intravenous hydrogen peroxide.

One patient, Gail, 34, had been suffering with systemic yeast infections for
five years and had taken a barrage of antibiotics and practiced rotation and
elimination diets, all to no effect. She had a vaginal yeast infection,
intermittent diarrhea, headaches, acne, lethargy, joint pain, mental
confusion, menstrual irregularities, and had been unable to work for two
years. Dr. Farr started her on weekly intravenous infusions of hydrogen
peroxide; after only two treatments, Gail reported feeling more alert and
able to concentrate better. After the third treatment, her complexion started
to improve, all signs of her vaginitis disappeared, and her bowel function
became normal. After eight treatments, Gail was free of all the symptoms
that had plagued her for five years; and after two more months, she went
job hunting.

Warning: Hydrogen peroxide therapy needs to be administered under

professional supervision, because uncontrolled oxidation may be
destructive to the body. Hydrogen peroxide should not be taken orally as it
causes nausea and vomiting, and rectal administration can lead to
inflammation of the lower intestinal tract. Other side-effects include
temporary faintness, fatigue, headaches, and chest pain. Please do not try
this therapy on your own.

Ayurvedic Medicine and Candidiasis

Dr Virender Sodhi, M.D. (Ayurveda), N.D., Director of the Ayurvedic &
Naturopathic Medical Clinic, in Bellevue, Washington says Candidiasis is a
condition caused by ama, the improper digestion of foods. He notes that
Candidiasis is caused by factors such as the common use of antibiotics,
birth control pills, and hormones, as well as environmental stresses, and the
society's addiction to sugar in the diet. "Ayurvedic medicine believes that
these stresses on the system cause carbohydrates to be digested
improperly," he says. "Furthermore, the immune system in the gut becomes
worn down."

Dr. Sodhi believes that successful treatment of Candidiasis depends on

strengthening the immune system and improving digestion with a
combination of treatments which include grapefruit seed oil and tannic acid.
He also uses long pepper, trikatu, ginger, cayenne, and neem before meals
to increase immunoglobulins and digestive functions.

Dr. Sodhi begins dosage with 1/4 teaspoon of herbs about 30 minutes
before each meal, with dosage increasing gradually to 8-10 teaspoons of
herbs a day and he also uses acidophilus and recommends that his pati
cleanse toxins from their systems using the pancha karma, program, which
involves dietary modification and the use of herbs.

Results from Dr. Sodhi's approach usually occur in 4-6 months.

Acupuncture and Candidiasis

William. M. Cargile, B.S.,D.C., FI.A.C.A., former Chairman of Research
for the American Association of Oriental Medicine, has successfully used
acupuncture on patients with Candidiasis.

He says: "I would start by using meridians that influence genital function,
spleen, and stomach. These are yin meridians and they correspond to areas
of immune system enhancement. You want to normalize the metabolism of
the cells in that part of the body." But Dr. Cargile adds that treatment is "a
waste of time" if the patient doesn't also pay attention to nutrition, which he
calls a significant solution”.
Dr. Cargile cites the case of a 41-year-old woman who suffered from severe
Candidiasis. She was a single mother of three children who had chronic
low-grade sore throats and was taking five antibiotic prescriptions. "This
had been going on at least three years," Dr. Cargile says. "She was
constantly bloated, had colonic distension, and had oral thrush so bad it
looked like cotton sticking down her throat. She had clearly destroyed the
balance of her intestinal flora." Dr. Cargile gave her a gargle solution of tea
tree oil, which reduced the pathogens. He had her change her diet and
douche with liquid acidophilus, and he gave her acupuncture treatments
through meridians that reached the larynx and throat. "After three
treatments over a period of three weeks, she was 90% better;' he states.
"She had no oral Candida like before, and was well on the road to
recovery."

Chapter 7 - Conclusion
The Correct Anti-Candida Therapy
"The vast majority of conventional doctors do not believe in the possibility
of a systemic overgrowth of the common fungus C. albicans, let alone know
about self-care treatments for the problem." says Dr. Metzger.

She has found that half the women with endometriosis in her practice have
this fungal overgrowth and that treating the fungus often helps relieve the
intense fatigue that strikes most women with the disease.

Candida Die Off

It has been proven by many scientists and numerous studies that the use of
these effective anti-Candida therapies alone will result in the Herxheimer
("die-off") reaction due to the rapid killing of the organism and subsequent
absorption of large quantities of yeast toxins, cell particles, and antigens.

Wikipedia provides the following definition: The Herxheimer reaction (also

known as Jarisch-Herxheimer or Herx) occurs when large quantities of
toxins are released into the body as bacteria (typically Spirochetal bacteria)
die, due to antibiotic treatment or rapid detoxification.

Typically the death of these bacteria and the associated release of

endotoxins occurs faster than the body can remove the toxins via the
natural detoxification process performed by the kidneys and liver. It is
manifested by fever, chills, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), and
exacerbation of skin lesions. Duration in syphilis is normally only a few
hours but can be much longer, up to months or years, for other diseases.
The intensity of the reaction reflects the intensity of inflammation present.
[Link]

You can also visit this site for more information about the die off effect.
[Link]

The Herxheimer reaction is also referred to as the “healing crisis” which is

a worsening of symptoms as a result of this die-off. In other words it feels
as if things are getting worse before they get better.

This reaction can be minimized by:

· Following the dietary recommendations for a minimum of two weeks
before taking an antiyeast agent.
· Supporting the liver by following the recommendations given
previously
· Starting any of the above-described antiyeast medications in low doses
and gradually increasing dosage over one month to achieve full
therapeutic dosage

Recommendations Summary
1. Avoid Sugar - In order to overcome Candidiasis, sugar must be
avoided in all its various forms.
2. Rotate Diet - Employ a rotation diet to determine if food allergies are a
contributing factor.
On this regimen, patients avoid certain suspected allergenic foods and
rotate non-allergenic food every four or more days.
3. Avoid Yeast -Eliminate all foods containing yeast, including bread,
biscuits, and cakes, and all fermented foods, such as vinegar, soy sauce,
and pickled foods.
4. Avoid alcohol, black tea, and coffee.
5. Take Supplements -Recommended supplements include:
· Vitamin A (builds resistance to infection)
· B vitamins (to increase antibody response),
· Vitamin C (stimulates the adrenal glands and immune processes),
· Vitamin E (the lack of which depresses immune response),
· Antioxidant immune-boosters, such as selenium, calcium, and
zinc, are also useful in combating Candidiasis.
6. Caprylic Acid could be the first line of attack on Candidiasis.
7. Plant Enzyme supplements from Papaya (papain) and Pineapple
(bromelain) can be used to treat yeast overgrowth.
8. Probiotics -To repopulate the intestines with friendly bacteria, take a
pro biotic supplement, particularly one containing L. acidophilus and B.
bifidum.
9. Herbs that contain berberine have proven particularly useful anti-
Candida agents. These include goldenseal, Oregon grape, and barberry.
Antifungal and antibacterial herbs include garlic, German chamomile,
aloe vera, ginger, cinnamon, rosemary, licorice, oil of oregano, and tea
tree oil.
10. Oxygen Therapy - Hydrogen peroxide therapy works as a defense
system, directly destroying invading bacteria, viruses, yeast, and
parasites.
11. Ayurvedic Medicine and Acupuncture may also be helpful for ridding
the body of Candida.
I trust that the information in this book has been useful and that you now
have a better understanding of your symptoms and treatment options.

Most patients can achieve benefits from the natural treatment described in
this book rather than following the drug approach.
