Principles for Effective Teaching & Learning

Facilitating a Learner-Centered Classroom

Learners benefit from an environment in which teachers and learners collaborate as partners
in the learning process. Teachers make instructional decisions based on learners’ ages,
interests, abilities, and needs. Teachers create multiple opportunities for learners to engage in
real-world tasks in the target language that spark curiosity and invite inquiry. Teachers plan
multiple opportunities for learner-to-learner interaction, enabling learners to collaborate and
communicate about topics that are meaningful to them.

Learner Experiences & Teacher Responsibilities

The identified learner experiences are possible because of the work done by the teacher. The
corresponding teacher responsibilities provide guidance for the teacher by indicating key criteria
from the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Framework.

• Learners use the lesson can-do statements to identify what they will be able to do
at the end of each learning episode.
• The teacher shares learning targets in student-friendly language. TELL Learning Experience: LE2.a

• Learners engage in activities within the range of their abilities and have some choice
in how they learn and demonstrate their learning.
• The teacher plans lessons that address the unique needs and interests of the students. TELL
Planning: PL3

• Learners collaborate using language to accomplish cognitively engaging tasks that

are meaningful and interesting to them.
• The teacher plans activities designed to keep all students engaged all the time. TELL Planning: PL8

• Learners interact with other learners and speakers of the language, creating a
balance between learner-to-learner communication and teacher talk.
• The teacher consciously monitors teacher talk in order to maximize student opportunities to
produce language. TELL Learning Experience: LE4.e

• Learners engage in activities that gradually enable them to individually meet the
lesson can-do statements.
• The teacher plans activities for students to produce language within the range of their
proficiency targets. TELL Planning: PL7.b

STARTALK suggests that teachers should consciously monitor their own talk to maximize student opportunities to produce language. This involves creating a learning environment where learner-to-learner interaction is prioritized, allowing learners to engage in meaningful communication and collaborate on tasks. The objective is to create a balance between teacher talk and learner interactions, where the focus is on enabling students to practice and use the target language effectively .

Teachers can ensure that language learning activities align with learners' proficiency targets by planning activities that gradually build towards meeting the lesson can-do statements. This involves selecting tasks that are within the learners' proficiency range and increase in complexity over time, allowing learners to advance their skills while staying motivated and challenged. Teachers should continuously assess and adjust the tasks to ensure they cater to the learners' developmental levels and learning goals .

To create a balanced communication environment, STARTALK suggests that teachers should consciously reduce teacher talk while increasing learner interactions. Teachers can achieve this by designing tasks that require learner collaboration, using real-world engagement tasks, and ensuring student-to-student communication is prioritized. Teachers should aim to create a classroom setting where learners actively use and produce language, and where teacher interventions facilitate rather than dominate the communication process .

The STARTALK principles advocate for a learner-centered approach by emphasizing collaboration between teachers and learners in the learning process. Teachers are encouraged to make instructional decisions that consider learners' ages, interests, abilities, and needs. The principles stress the importance of providing learners with real-world tasks, opportunities for choice, and engaging tasks that promote active participation and meaningful learning experiences .

Teachers facilitate learner engagement in real-world tasks by creating multiple opportunities for students to interact and communicate in the target language. This involves planning lessons that are relevant to students' interests, abilities, and needs, and allowing them to engage in cognitively engaging tasks. Such tasks are designed to spark curiosity and encourage inquiry, thereby closely linking the language learning process to practical, real-world situations .

STARTALK principles advise teachers to plan lessons that specifically address the diverse needs and interests of their students. This involves providing learners with choice in how they learn and demonstrate their learning, ensuring that activities are within the range of learners' abilities. Teachers are encouraged to create a variety of learning experiences that cater to different proficiency levels and learning styles, all while keeping students continuously engaged .

Real-world tasks are integrated into language learning by designing activities that directly relate to learners' lives and future language use scenarios. STARTALK principles suggest using tasks that encourage learners to inquire and solve problems in the target language, making the learning process authentic and relevant. Teachers should provide opportunities for students to role-play, simulate real-life conversations, and work on projects that mimic real-world language application, thereby enhancing both engagement and inquiry .

The 'can-do statements' help learners identify what they are expected to achieve at the end of each learning episode. They serve as clear, student-friendly learning targets that guide both learners and teachers in setting specific objectives for language proficiency. These statements enable learners to track their own progress and empower them to take an active role in their learning journey .

Learner-to-learner interactions are critical in a STARTALK-centered language class as they provide students the opportunity to practice communication skills in real-life scenarios. These interactions help learners use the target language more naturally and confidently, building their proficiency through collaborative tasks. Such exchanges promote critical thinking and problem-solving as students work together on meaningful tasks, reinforcing their learning and engagement .

STARTALK recommends that teachers maintain high student engagement by planning activities that are both meaningful and interesting to students. This includes designing tasks that are relevant to the students' lives and interests, providing opportunities for choice, and creating an environment where all students can be actively involved at all times. Teachers are encouraged to facilitate tasks that are engaging cognitively and align with the unique interests and abilities of the learners .
