Asset Management Definition(s)
• A strategic enterprise that combines engineering practices and
analysis with sound business practices and economic theory (US
DOT, 1999)
• A comprehensive and structured approach to the long-termed
management of assets as tools for the efficient and effective delivery of
community benefits” (Austroads, 1997).
• Systematic and coordinated activities and practices through which an
organization optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset
systems, their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their
lifecycles for the purpose of achieving its organisational strategic plan
(PAS 55).
• Balancing of costs, opportunities and risks against the desired
performance of assets, to achieve the organizational objectives (ISO

Pavement as an asset
• The pavement infrastructure asset is one of the most valuable
asset owned by the public sector.
• Underfunding and lack of maintenance can very quickly
jeopardise this huge asset, which has been built at great
expense and effort in the last decades.
• Pavements need to be maintained and have their own service
life, which can be prolonged efficiently if the timely corrective
action is taken in an appropriate way.
• There is little information about the asset of roads.
