CHE-101: Energy Engineering
Tutorial Sheet-3
1. A super thermal power plant of 1100 MW capacity is run on coal having the following
ultimate analysis:
Moisture : 18.10 %
Ash : 7.72 %
Carbon : 55.30 %
Hydrogen : 3.21 %
Oxygen : 13.32 %
Nitrogen : 1.25 %
Sulphur : 1.10 %
The overall conversion efficiency of coal to electrical energy of the above plant may be taken as
44.56%. The low heating value of the coal based on the above ultimate analysis is found to be
15.38 MJ/kg. The plant runs for 315 days in a year.
Determine the following.
i. Emissions of CO2 and SO2 in MT/ year.
ii. Emissions of CO2 and SO2 in kg/kWh of electricity generated.
iii. Flow rate of the cooling water in m3 per hour required to condense the steam from
the steam turbines assuming that 48.45% of the thermal energy is absorbed by
cooling water and the rise of temperature of cooling water is limited to 10.5 oC.
The specific heat of water is 4.18 kJ/kg K.
2. Calculate the amount of air required in kg/kg for the following fuels for their stoichiometric
combustion.
a. Gasoline with a general formula of C8H18
b. Ethanol
c. Methanol
Also determine the amount of water formed in kg/kg from the combustion of the above fuels.
3. A crude is having a density of 872 kg/m3 and sulfur content of 1.2% by mass. Determine the
API gravity of this crude.
