I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to
my teacher Mrs. Merin Mary who gave me the excellent
opportunity to do this wonderful ALS project, which also
helped me in doing a lot of Research and I came to know
about so many new things.
Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents and

OBJECTIVES
Purpose:
The purpose of making this project is to understand the story
The Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet and to learn the important life
lessons it gives us about valuing our language and not wasting time.
Objectives:
1. To explain the theme of linguistic chauvinism shown in the story.
2. To understand how procrastination and delay lead to regret.
3. To highlight the need for time management in our studies and
daily life.
4. To collect information about countries where people give
importance to their mother tongue.
Goals:
To realize the importance of our own language in building identity
and culture.
To learn how to respect and preserve our mother tongue.
To practice managing our time wisely and not keep postponing
work.
To apply the lessons from the story in our own student life.

Topic 1 – The Last Lesson
Author: Alphonse Daudet
Theme: Linguistic Chauvinism, Procrastination, Value of Time
Introduction:
The Last Lesson is set during the Franco-Prussian War, when France lost
Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. Under German rule, schools were ordered to teach only
German, suppressing French language and culture.
Main Idea:
Franz, the protagonist, regrets his casual attitude toward learning French.
Only on the last day does he realize the importance of his mother tongue.
Highlights the significance of time management: delaying learning can lead to lost
opportunities.
Historical Examples:
British rule in India promoted English while suppressing native languages.
English domination in Ireland almost eradicated Gaelic, later revived by cultural
movements.
Today, countries like France, India, and Japan respect and preserve their mother
tongues as part of identity.
Life Lesson:
Language is more than a tool for communication; it represents pride, heritage,
and culture. Procrastination can have serious consequences, and we must value what we
have before it is lost.

Topic 2 – The Lost Spring
Author: Anees Jung
Theme: Child Labour, Poverty, Loss of Childhood
Introduction:
The Lost Spring portrays the harsh reality of poverty in Indian slums,
highlighting the struggles of children forced into labor instead of education.
Main Idea:
Children in Seemapuri, Delhi, survive as ragpickers.
Children in Firozabad work in glass bangle-making.
Poverty robs children of education and a carefree childhood.
Slum Conditions in India:
Dharavi, Mumbai: Overcrowded housing, poor sanitation, limited health facilities.
Seelampur, Delhi: Similar overcrowding and lack of resources.
Millions of children under 14 are forced to work instead of attending school.
Cycle of Poverty:
Children inherit their parents’ work and social conditions.
Limited opportunities trap families in poverty generation after generation.
Life Lesson:
Childhood should be for learning, growth, and hope. Society must provide
education and opportunities to underprivileged children and break the cycle of poverty.

Topic 3 – Deep Water
Author: William Douglas
Theme: Overcoming Fear, Courage, Perseverance
Introduction:
Deep Water is an autobiographical account of William Douglas’ struggle
with the fear of water after nearly drowning as a child.
Main Idea:
His fear prevented him from enjoying swimming and outdoor activities.
Through swimming lessons, practice, and determination, he gradually overcame fear.
Application to Everyday Life:
Everyone has fears: exams, public speaking, heights, social rejection.
Consistent effort, encouragement, and support help overcome fears.
Personal Example: Stage presentation fear overcome with practice and teacher
support.
Life Lesson:
Fear is natural, but surrendering to it limits us. Courage, patience, and
perseverance can turn fear into strength. Deep Water inspires us to face challenges
confidently and never give up.
