Science Test – Class 10 (CBSE)
Max Marks: 80 Time: 3 Hours
General Instructions:
1 All questions are compulsory.
2 The question paper consists of 30 questions divided into four sections A, B, C and D.
3 Use the given space for diagrams wherever needed.
4 Marks are indicated against each question.
Section A (1 × 6 = 6 marks)
1. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of zinc with dilute hydrochloric acid.
2. Define focal length of a concave mirror.
3. Why do we see the Sun for a few minutes even after it has set?
4. Name the energy currency of the cell.
5. Write one function of the cerebellum in humans.
6. Give one example of an eco-friendly practice to manage waste.
Section B (2 × 6 = 12 marks)
1. A student adds solid sodium bicarbonate to acetic acid. Write the chemical reaction that takes place
and mention one use of the gas released.
2. Distinguish between acidic and basic solutions with respect to the ions they produce.
3. State the laws of reflection of light.
4. Explain why a convex lens is called a converging lens.
5. What is peristalsis? Why is it important in the process of digestion?
6. Differentiate between reflex action and voluntary action with examples.
Section C (3 × 10 = 30 marks)
1. A green plant is kept in the dark for 24 hours and then exposed to sunlight after tying one of its leaves
with black tape. Explain the steps of an experiment to prove the importance of sunlight in
photosynthesis.
2. Write three types of chemical reactions with an example for each.
3. A 5 cm tall object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a concave mirror of focal length 15
cm. The distance of the object from the mirror is 30 cm. Draw the ray diagram and find the position, size
and nature of the image formed.
4. Explain the structure and working of human brain with a neat labelled diagram.
5. State the differences between autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition.
6. Draw a labelled diagram of the human eye and explain how we are able to see nearby as well as
distant objects.
7. Write any three differences between acids and bases based on their chemical properties.
8. Explain the effects of refraction of light in the atmosphere with two examples.
9. What is a trophic level? Explain with a diagram the energy flow across different trophic levels in an
ecosystem.
10. Write the function of the following in human beings:
a) Hydrochloric acid in stomach
b) Platelets
c) Pancreatic amylase
Section D (5 × 6 = 30 marks)
1. Describe an activity to show that carbon dioxide is released during respiration.
2. Explain in detail the construction and working of a simple electric motor with the help of a labelled
diagram.
3. Write the chemical equations for the reactions taking place when:
a) Iron reacts with copper sulphate solution.
b) Calcium carbonate is heated strongly.
c) Hydrogen gas burns in oxygen.
d) Sodium reacts with water.
e) Aluminium reacts with hydrochloric acid.
4. With the help of a labelled diagram, explain the phenomenon of dispersion of white light through a
glass prism.
5. What is meant by biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances? Explain with examples.
Discuss their impact on the environment.
6. How is the human eye able to adjust itself to see objects clearly placed at different distances?
Explain the process in detail.
