Dimensional Analysis - Quick Summary Sheet

Definition: Method in physics to check correctness of equations, convert units, and derive
relations.

Fundamental Quantities & Dimensions:

Quantity Dimension
Length [L]
Mass [M]
Time [T]
Electric current [I]
Temperature [K]
Luminous intensity [Cd]
Amount of substance [mol]

Examples of Dimensional Formula:

• Velocity = [L][T]-1
• Force = [M][L][T]-2
• Energy = [M][L]2[T]-2

Uses of Dimensional Analysis:

1. Checking correctness of equations
Example: s = ut + ½at² → Both sides [L]
2. Deriving relations between quantities
Example: Pendulum: T ∝ √(l/g)
3. Conversion of units
Example: 1 N = 10■ dyne

Limitations:
• Cannot give dimensionless constants (e.g., 2, π, ½).
• Cannot differentiate between same dimensional quantities (e.g., torque & energy).
• Limited when more than 3 variables involved.
